Albuquerque: Yanni's has disappeared from Central~!

We like Zorba's at Juan Tabo and Montgomery (next to Sunflower Market), but I think Yanni's is still there. At least the last time I was in Nob Hill it was there.

LOL Jennifer! You're right though. The rye is good for ABQ. I've been gone from the east coast too long to be a rye bread maven, but it's the best I've had here.

Lunch spot in Chelsea near 24th and 7th

We will be staying at the Hampton Inn on 24th between 6th and 7th. Looking for a good lunch spot nearby open on Sunday. Any suggestions? Also, planning to walk the High Line. Any suggestions for lunch along the way?

We ate there when it very first opened and weren't as impressed as you guys seem to be, so I guess we need to try it again. Albuquerque surely needs good Chinese food! I don't post often but would love to join everyone for a chowdown!

Ruidoso Chow

Thanks for the tip Scott! Sorry I didn't see this until now, but I loved the pizza joint downtown -Cafe Rio -Is it gone? Also, what about the Greenhouse cafe in Lincoln? That's the chef that grows his own veggies. It's been several years since I've been down there, but it was very good.

OK, here goes nothing...best pizza in NM?

Besides the Rio in Ruidoso -- Farina in ABQ- hands down.

Decent New Mexican place is Los Lunas?

I think the name of the place we like is Tilophila's (sp?). It's across the street from Luna Mansion in an old house. Have eaten there a few times and it's pretty good and very authentic.

Sunday Dinner in Santa Fe

I really recommend Il Piatto for Italian. It's a great little place and reasonably priced. Andiamo is good too, but Il Piatto has a much broader menu.

Thank you for that tasting note, Melanie! I have a bottle in the wine fridge and am now anxious to try it. What would be your rec for a good food pairing?

Pre opera dinner in Santa Fe

So I was all set to splurge on either Ristra or O'keefe and then we found out that some other relatives will be joining us as well, so now I think we have to scale down a bit. How's El Meson? Any comments? We love Il Piatto and are leaning toward going there, but we have been there so many times and wanted to try something new.

I really hate being in charge of planning for a group with varying tastes! Can you help??

Pre opera dinner in Santa Fe

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I am now considering the O-Keefe Cafe and maybe Ristra. For various reasons tailgating is out of the question. I'd like to consider El Nido, but it really doesn't seem to get good reviews.

lp, can you provide a link to the prix fixe deals? I can't find anything on line in the Pasatiempo. I had a previous post looking for prix fixe places, but really didn't get any leads. You are right, my folks do prefer the smaller, less noisy places although they managed fine at La Boca and they do love Pasqual's.

Keep the ideas coming. I need to hurry and make reservations!

First visit to Albuquerque

Within walking distance there are many chains (Macaroni Grill, Pei Wei, Fuddrucker's, Elephant Bar, Calif Pizza Kitchen, Starbucks), but of course we all hope you"ll try the local fare. In ABQ Uptown is Marcello's Steakhouse. I've heard it's good (think expensive steak). There is also a Satellite Coffee next to Pei Wei. It's great for coffee, dessert and some light snacks. Might work for a light breakfast. There's a Garduno's across the street from the Marriot. It's a local Mexican chain. Not my fave by any means, but decent and walkable. Le Peep is fine for convenience. Japanese Kitchen is nearby for sushi or teppen grill.

All the places you mentioned in your original post are good (Duran's doesn't do anything for me, though). You can walk around Nob Hill and just choose what looks good to you. Zinc, Scalo, La Provence, Nob Hill Bar & Grill... all within a few blocks of each other. Chef Du Jour is very good and is near Old Town. Personally, I would skip Savoy (same ownership as Seasons).

There'a a little lunch spot not too far from the hotel called the Oak Tree Cafe that is good. It's sort of hidden near the Sheraton.

Please be aware that you will not be able to hail a cab in this town. You will need to call ahead and arrange to be picked up. The Rapid Ride as Erich described is a good alternative to get to Nob Hill. Any decent restaurant will call a cab for you when you are ready to leave, but a car is the easiest way to get around in ABQ.

Let us know how you make out!

Lunch en route from Albuquerque to Santa Fe?

Just to throw out another idea.... if you want to take the Turquoise Trail, there's a new Italian place on North 14 called Gordon's. I haven't tried it yet, but the owner is Gordon from Vivace in Nob Hill, so might be worth a shot.

Pre opera dinner in Santa Fe

But there's a catch... we're taking my 90 year old folks and they don't do New Mexican cuisine. I'm thinking The Compound, Ristra, Bistro 315..... ? What do you think? I would like it under $40 PP with a glass of wine or 1/2 bottle and dessert. They love Il Piatta and have already been to La Boca (good) and Santacafe (didn't like it), so something different. Nothing too trendy or frou frou (?), just good food and a nice atmosphere.

BTW, we're staying out at Buffalo Thunder resort so it doesn't need to be near the plaza.

TIA!

Santa Fe Provisions (where to buy chiles and such)

ditto on the Farmer's market. You might also try Santa fe cooking school. They have a little market with local products.

Prix Fixe in Santa Fe

Thanks to all! We went to Andiamo after all (very good), but I did see an ad that Il Piatta is doing a prix fixe 3 course dinner and Compound is doing something on Wednesdays. There are probably others. I think it's a great idea to bring in locals on weekdays. I wish we had more prix pixe deals in ABQ.

Prix Fixe in Santa Fe

We're coming up to SF (from ABQ) for a concert on Wednesday night and I was all set to pick Andiamo for dinner, but I know that quite a few places are doing weeknight 3 course dinner specials so maybe we can take advantage. Please give me some ideas. I know Bistro 315 is doing it every night... anywhere else that we should consider?

Thanks!

taste of tubac--anyone? AZ

We'll be in Tucson next weekend and I saw The Taste of Tubac advertised. Is it worth going? Has anybody ever gone to this event? I'd appreciate any feedback.

We did get tickets to the Tucson Crush wine event at the Tucson Art Museum. Are any of you Chowhounds planning to be there?

Anybody been to the Crush festival in Tucson?

Well, we decided to go also! Where did you find the list of wineries? I have not been able to get too much info on the website and apparently tickets are not on sale yet.

Is this a casual affair or do people dress up? Thanks for the feedback! See you there!

Rrestaurants near Manzano HS Abq

Shari,

Didn't see much else than what has already been posted. I'm gathering that you live in Santa Fe. If so, you already have Chow's and Il Vicino, so nothing new there. Weck's is not what I would call healthy, but it's not bad and it's nearby. It sure beats the Taco Bell on the corner!

Not sure how far you're willing to travel, but you might want to drive to Montgomery and Juan Tabo and go to Flying Star. Much better than both of my first suggestions, but would take you 10 minutes driving time.

I'm driving up that way this afternoon, so if I spot something else, I'll report later.

Rrestaurants near Manzano HS Abq

That area is predominately fast food paradise. Probably the closest non-chain is Weck's. It's 2 or 3 blocks north of Lomas and on the west side of the street. It's basic sandwiches, burgers, some Mexican, etc. Chow's is a couple blocks north on the east side of the street for upscale Asian.

Are you looking for any certain kind of food?

Anybody been to the Crush festival in Tucson?

We're thinking about coming to Tucson for the Crush wine festival the first weekend of April. Has anybody been to it? Any comments? I can't seem to find much info about the specifics like what wineries will be there.

As long as I'm asking, there's also a Taste of Tubac thing going on that same weekend. Is that worthwhile?

Thanks!

Trader Joe's Fresh Natural Brined Turkey

The TJ's turkey anyone? post was my original post and I'm here to tell you that ours came out very good. It was moist and tender and was not salty (which was my biggest fear). I will buy another next year.

Trader Joe's turkey anyone?

Well, I bought one. They had just gotten a new shipment in and said they weren't sure if they were getting any more, so I bit the bullet and brought the bird home. I decided to turn the temp down to the coldest setting in my garage fridge and keep it there. Hopefully we will all survive Thanksgiving just fine and I'll be able to report back!

Trader Joe's turkey anyone?

My thoughts exactly! They are fresh, but according to the links posted above by Antilope, that didn't seem to be a problem for anyone. They have "use or freeze by" dates on them. I'm going to run by there today and ask. They sold a crapload of them last year... and nobody died that I heard about ;~)
