Staying Fit When Eating Is Your Job

When I started working at a pizza place it was easy to eat what was extra. That was not a good idea, to say the least. Now, I have overhauled my diet (vegetarian on my way to vegan) and I bring my own food to work. I also coach cheerleaders and I make it a point to be as in shape as possible so that I can workout with the girls and be a role model for them. Also being a certified personal trainer helps as I have a desire and ability to keep my exercises simple, yet effective so that I can do them at home. (Turbo Jam is a great motivator as well!)

"By the Way, I'm Vegan"

Did any of you catch the Top Chef Masters Finale where they had to cook for Zooey Deschanel? Not only is she vegan, but she is gluten intolerant and doesn't consume soy. Given a day to shop and prepare, these "master" chefs were still thrown for a loop because they have a hard time conceiving of dishes without those ingredients. If you look at my blog, you'll see what I mean about that episode. It was pretty sad.

10 Vegan Lunch Recipes

I think it's great that a food site this comprehensive includes vegan recipes -- as it should. It wouldn't be right to exclude these recipes just because they are vegan.

Basic (Vegan) Chocolate Cupcake

I'm going to make these for my brother's 3rd grade class during the first week of school. I think they'll really like it.

Amaretto Sour Vegan Shake

I don't drink, but I think others in my family might appreciate it without making fun of it being vegan.

Cookbook With Easy Everyday Meals? Suggestions?

I wouldn't discount Rachel Ray's books, they are very useful and you can still get her recipes from the FN website for free, so that's a bonus.

I have a Vegetarian book from Williams-Sonoma. It has 30 meals and meals that only require 15 minute prep times. I think all of their books are like that but the best part is that they have tons of books, not just theirs but books by other cooks/chefs.

I hope that helps as I am rebuilding my cookbook library for my personal chef business and I am particular about simple meals.

On the Topic of TV Host Bashing

I think it's crazy that people have so much hostility to TV personalities. We don't know these people. If you don't like them, so what. Personally, I'm not a big fan of shows with Bobby Flay, but I respect his skills. As for my skills, it is people like RR who brought me back to the kitchen.

I'm not a housewife, I'm just a single gal who lives in a house with 5 other people with very busy schedules. Anything I can do to help get something other than fast food or take out is welcome to me. Not only that, but my interest in RR began because of an article about why people loved to hate her, so I figured I'd check her out myself.

Making her recipes and her encouragement to try new things in the kitchen has made me more confident to cook for other people and add personal chef services to my personal training business. I have even managed to get my family to shop at the local farmer's market. Something they would not normally do.

So, I thank people like RR who keep it simple and real. That's what I like to see. After all, if it's not simple, people won't do it. Who wants to feel like they can't measure up as a cook because they're always watching gourmets or spending all of your free time in the kitchen. Sorry folks, I have other things to do than spend forever in the kitchen. I want my meals simple, quick and healthy.
