Olathe: Where restaurants go to die...
Delayed reply but Spin in Olathe is still open. Also I'm surprised no one mentioned Chapala. It's my favorite local Mexican restaurant in the city, not just JoCo.
The best thing your school cafeteria served
From elementary school, I vividly recall mashed potatoes w/ flourescent yellow gravy that I liked a lot. (But am disturbed by now!) Also the BEST mexican pizza, shaped like an octagon w/ cheese that was a very unnatural shade of orange.
top 3 BBQ places in Kansas City, MO
I like Gates for the mac salad, pickles and fries. Steer clear of the burnt ends (really fatty) but the brisket is really good.
Oklahoma Joe's is the best all around BBQ in town, I think.
Jack Stack is good for entertaining groups or clients who don't neccessarily want down and dirty atmosphere.
Zarda has good sausage, pot salad and fries.
KC Masterpiece is AWFUL. Sauce too, an embarassment for the city reputation if you ask me.

I seriously think that the LC's myth is all about hungry commuters who drive by it every afternoon. Smelling, but unable to actually eat it.
Feed Me: Strouds or Peachtree? (KC)
Agreed on the rudeness, wyco. I don't really think there's any place for that kind of snobbish attitude on a board like this,, bluesharp68.
As to the topic, I like Stroud's Chicken Fried Steak and potatoes. Peachtree on 18th & Vine is closed, but they opened a new one in Lee's Summit that is nice and has terrific service. I have also only heard great things about the Buffet on Eastwood Trafficway. Guess its a matter of what level of gluttony you're in for. :o)
A Eulogy for the Shopping Mall: What are/were your favorite food court foods?
I love Original Pizza. I prefer Pretzel Time, if only for the garlic pretzel, and good mustard.
Mint Jelly
The mint jelly from the jar turns my stomach a little. Last time I made lamb chops I made an apple and mint salsa. Added the flavor and aroma without being neon green.
What Kind of Cooking Show Host Do You Prefer?
I look at Alton a little like Martha Stewart. You always learn something but that doesn't mean you're going to blow out eggs and make ornaments. Or build a smoker out of a cardboard box, in the case of Alton Brown. :o)
Why should I renew my Saveur subscription?
I subscribe to Gourmet, Bon Appetit, and Food & Wine. I let my Saveur lapse last year. Starting to feel that way about Bon Appetit too. I love Gourmet, maybe because I love Ruth Reichl so much, but I find the editorial content is so much better than the others.
Hidden Treasures for New Year's Dinner in KC?
Looking for something intimate and different for New Year's. Any ideas?
SPAM in the White House?
Spam repulses me because the smell is very reminiscent of canned cat food.
But I cannot deny that well done and sliced thin, the flavor is msg good.
Panini grills? If you have one, do you use it/like it?
I have the Cuisinart with the interchangable plates and I love it. Its a breeze to pull it out, use it and clean up. I've found that it always cooks evenly and heats up quickly.
I love it.
Quantity help with braised short ribs, please
Couldn't have said it better! I was going to say you need 2-3 ribs/ pieces per person.
5 Kitchen Gadgets you can't live without???
1. Silicon Tipped Tongs
2. Digital Read Thermometer
3. Microplane Grater
4. MANUAL can opener (my overwhelming hatred toward electric can openers is best expressed elsewhere! :o)
5. Tie: Mini Spatula, Immersion Blender
The BEST Chicken and Dumplings?
You are better off rolling them out and slicing them into noodles if you are going to do that.
Jack Stack BBQ at Country Club Plaza
The food is still good but there is zero ambience at the plaza and the freight house locations. I'd drive to Martin City to have the real slanted floor, low ceiling, porcine sculptural experience.
It's Just Better With Pickles
Amen! Gate's BBQ in Kansas City has the best pickles with BBQ on earth. I get a side of them and just dip them in the spicy sauce. So amazing...
What foods are a MUST for Thanksgiving?
I agree, brussel sprouts get a bad rap! I also make them with horseradish cream sauce. AMAZING!
East-coast pizza in KS/MO area?
The closest thing I've found to NY style pizza here is either Original Pizza, at most malls, or Costco Pizza~ which is divine.
There is supposedly someplace on 135th and Nieman in Overland Park that is NY Style, but I've yet to try it.
KC - Blue Grotto anyone?
I ate there for lunch a month or two ago Had the caesar salad, which was pretty good, but the pizza~yuck. Bland. This place is all atmosphere and no substance.
Plaza Art Fair -- KC
I LOVE the plaza art fair. What I choose for lunch usually depends on what smell pulls me the strongest. :o) But you must save room for the melting pot fruit with chocolate fondue.
As to price, well, it's all pretty expensive for street food. I would expect to spend $10-$20 on lunch or dinner without wine.
Anthony Bourdain in Kansas City
My friend and I are going to both the presentation and the meet and greet. We're totally psyched.
