9 days in Toronto -- what are the must-eats?

Great suggestions everyone, thanks so much! Wonderful to know that there's Sri Lankan in Toronto -- we still mourn the demise of L.A.'s Sri Lankan restaurant many years ago!

9 days in Toronto -- what are the must-eats?

My husband, an avid Chowhounder from L.A., will be spending 9 days in Toronto on business. What are the spots not to be missed? He'll be staying in the downtown east area and has an eclectic palate, with a special love for cheaper ethnic food (although the occasional fancy meal is great, too!) This trip has come up unexpectedly and we have no knowledge of Toronto food culture -- tell us what it's all about, hounds! What would he be a fool to miss?

Street Food Wedding!

Love this thread! I'm also booking Kogi for my wedding (we decided on it before I read about it here, promise!) and think the idea of more L.A. street food is great. Bahn mis would be fab. How about Thai snacks and salads? Crispy rice salad, beef salad, satays for the less adventurous, fermented spicy ribs. Round it out with bobas to drink!

Eat Restaurant

I ate there last week. Love the atmosphere and decor -- very clean and bright. I had the fig and blue cheese torte -- delicious but enormous and rich, there's no way I could finish it. My boyfriend ordered the breakfast platter with fried green tomatoes. It was also a huge serving, and the tomatoes were very good.

Our only complaint was the service. I'm far from nitpicky about service, but the restaurant was only half full and our waitress was often nowhere to be seen. I finally had to go to the register (next to the kitchen) to ask for the check. It took another five minutes to get it, and even longer to get my change. I'm sure the waitress and/or restaurant were just having an off day, but it really put a down ending on a pretty good meal.

Guanciale

I believe the Artisan Cheese Gallery in Studio City has it.

Albano's Pizza on Melrose closed?

That's great news! I'm not familiar with the location -- where in TL is it?

APRIL 2008 Cookbook of the Month - Suggestions Gladly Accepted

I'm new to the thread and would love to do a Batali cookbook, particularly MOLTO ITALIANO. We've been using it regularly and have lots of recipes we love, and have now decided to cook our way through all the recipes over the remainder of the year.

Kitschy Birthday Dinner?

No list of Los Angeles kitsch dining is complete without El Coyote! As kitschy as it comes, with lethal margaritas, surly waitresses and combination plates that all look identical!

I second the Dresden Room -- Marty and Elaine never disappoint!

I believe the Thail Elvis now performs at Palms Thai on Hollywood Boulevard -- a very fun place, good for a big group, though it's loud.

The Lava Lounge on La Brea is also fun for drinks -- I had a birthday party there years ago.

I haven't been there lately, but Sunshine Thai in North Hollywood (13212 Sherman Way) has some mind-numbingly strange decor...a faux-river scene complete with fake deer. Delicious food, too.

Minibar on Cahuenga in Universal City can be fun. Its kitsch is premeditated, but come on -- there are several huge "big-eyed child" paintings from the 60s on the walls.

Grind and brew coffee maker

My only recommendation is to avoid the Cuisinart Grind & Brew at all costs! Impossible to clean and incredibly finicky...unless I set mine up in a very particular way, coffee would end up all over the counter. Man, did I hate that coffeemaker.

Best chocolate cake in L.A.?

I need to buy the world's yummiest chocolate cake for a birthday this week. The Old Fashioned Chocolate at Sweet Lady Jane's has never failed me, but I'm curious to know what other people suggest. Thanks!

Gelato Bar

Just got back from checking out Gelato Bar and really liked it! I got both mango and the blood orange -- the blood orange is amazing! Boyfriend got chocolate/hazelnut, which was very good and reminiscent of Rome. Yes, it's on the expensive side...but the "3 tastes only" rule, while posted, was certainly not being enforced. Definitely worth checking out -- I'll be going back!

Top 10 Tastes of California [L.A. Area]

What a great topic! First, a general recommendation: in addition to chowhound, check out Jonathan Gold's food reviews at www.laweekly.com. His "Counter Intelligence" column (he also wrote a book by the same name) is a great way to find out about great restaurants.

You can't visit L.A. without trying Thai food, and you can't go wrong with most of the restaurants in Thai Town (Hollywood Blvd.) or on Sherman Way in North Hollywood. Yai, hidden in a Hollywood strip mall behind a 7-11, has fantastic grilled beef salad. Sri Siam in North Hollywood has FANTASTIC northern Thai food. Try the spicy pork ribs, the catfish custard, or the nam prik oom (not sure of the spelling -- it's a spciy vegetable based dip.) Palms Thai on Hollywood Blvd has very good food and will provide one of those "only in L.A." experiences of watching a Thai Elvis impersonator perform.

Spiciest dishes in L.A.?

I nominate the BBQ beef salad at Yai (if you ask them to make Thai-style!), the nam prik oom (sp?) at Sri Siam and several dishes at Renu Nakorn. The long-gone, much-missed Sri Lankan restaurant Chamika Catering had a spicy "deviled meat," and Szechuan hotpot never disappoints. I'm trying Chung King for the first time tonight, so I'll probably have new contenders soon. What dishes do YOU count on to pack the heat?
