Best Places without Reservation During Jazz Fest
Thanks all. We are staying in the CBD with no transportation but are very willing to take a cab somewhere. I did call Dante's Kitchen (one of our party had previously been there and loved it) but they couldn't accomodate 5. I had gotten a res there for 4 people and the restaurant said they will try to squeeze five into a 4 top. I'd like to try Domenica. Is it possible to walk in?
Jazz Fest
I'm so excited to go to 2nd weekend for my 3rd time. This time I'm bringing high school buddies who've never been to NOLA. My first thing to eat there will be a Cochon de Lait Po Boy and a Rosemint Ice Tea. Definitely second the Pheasant Gumbo, Soft Shell Crab Po Boy. Also love Boudin Balls and Fry Bread. Of course have to have the Coconut Pie and Mango Freeze. Thanks for the other recs; have to try them as well.
Cant wait!!!!!!!
Best Places without Reservation During Jazz Fest
Am looking for a decent place for dinner on Thursday during 2nd weekend. We already have reservations other nights at Emeril's, Luke and Commander's. I assume we will be relatively full from the great fare at Fest, so am looking for something at around 9 for 5 people. I have been scouring Open Table for something, but 5 people seems to be the challenge.
I've been to Gumbo Shop several times on past trips but would like something else. Have also been to Deenie's and Acme.
Places for a reunion dinner for 5 guys
Four high school friends and I are meeting for our 30th reunion in May. I'm looking for somewhere to have a special dinner that is fun and has good food. Shouldn't be stuffy but should be nice. Would like somewhere with good drinks and should not be a chain. I was thinking Commander's or Cochon would am open to suggestions. I have been to NOLA several times and have been to Commander's, Cochon, Herbsaint and Brigsten's. We are going to be at Jazz Fest, so don't need lunch.
Looking for Recs for 1st time Visit with Teenagers
My girls are more on the sophisticated side, but they also enjoy a good pizza and fun desert. I'm proud to say they have inherited my palate and taste of adventure. Where should we go for pizza? On other threads I see Artichoke for a slice, but what about a whole pie?
Looking for Recs for 1st time Visit with Teenagers
We are only staying on the UWS for its proximity to Central Park and others. We definitely plan on going throughout the city and are looking for restaurants throughout.
Looking for Recs for 1st time Visit with Teenagers
We are coming from Orange County (home of amazing Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean), but spend a lot of time in Los Angeles. We are probably looking for most of the time less than $50, but will go to at least one nice place for higher end dining. These choices so far sound great.
Looking for Recs for 1st time Visit with Teenagers
I am bringing my 3 teenage daughters to NYC in July for a long weekend. They are very adventurous eaters, as am I. We live in California and have lots of access to high quality Mexican and Asian, so would prefer something that we can't find at home. We definitely plan on hitting Katz's, Shake Shack, Zabar's and Russ & Daughters. I'm looking for some recommendations on sit down restaurants that are fun, good food and not excessively expensive. Would take Italian, Spanish or any other interesting cuisines. We are staying on the Upper West Side, but are willing to travel.

If we can only afford one "high-end" spot on our trip, WHICH?
I went to Herbsaint when I was there for Jazz Fest. It was phenomenonal on all levels. I had previously been to Cochon and loved it also. However, if I had to choose, I would go with Herbsaint.

Herbsaint, NOLA or MiLa
Well, we went to Herbsaint last night and it was fantastic!. I had the Lebanon, KY cocktail and it was very refreshing. Had the special crawfish remoulade as an appetizer and the duck confit over dirty rice. My brother and sister in law had the calamari/octopus over risotto and the shrimp. Both were outstanding. Brown butter tart for dessert. Very yummy!

Best Quick Breakfast
I am coming to Fest this week. Want something small before heading out to the track for the main event. I would like something quick but good for breakfast. I am staying near the Convention Center. I love the black ham biscuits from Mother's but I keep seeing horrible comments about the restaurant, so I am looking for alternatives. Could be great pastries or breakfast sandwiches.
Great New Orleans restaurants near Mother's
What is wrong with Mother's? I have been a couple of times for limited menu items but I love their black ham biscuits. Is there anywhere else to get them (or something similar)? Am coming to Fest this week and want a small breakfast before I go out and gorge myself at the Fest.
Herbsaint, NOLA or MiLa
Thanks. I wound up choosing Herbsaint. I went to Cochon last year and also heard Donald Link speak at Jazz Fest. I was very impressed with both experiences and am looking forward to Herbsaint.

First time in New Orleans at Jazz Fest
Yes, it is in the Grandstand. They have presentations all 4 days. Here is the schedule- http://www.nojazzfest.com/foodcrafts/food/food-heritage-10.php.
There is also a Cajun Cabin stage with presentations Friday-Sunday. Here is their schedule- http://www.nojazzfest.com/foodcrafts/food/cajun-cabin-10.php
First time in New Orleans at Jazz Fest
Try to hit at least some of the food demonstrations in the Grandstand area on the Food Heritage Stage. Good information and free samples of what they cook. Also a good place to cool down and get off your feet. And clean bathrooms are there!
Herbsaint, NOLA or MiLa
Thanks. I was on Open Table yesterday and there are spaces available at all. I will check into Coquette.
Herbsaint, NOLA or MiLa
Am coming to the city for Fest. Will be with my brother and his wife, both adventurous eaters. We are going to Commander's on Friday night, but need an idea for Wednesday night. Thinking between Herbsaint, NOLA and MiLa. Any recommendations?

Corn my own beef?
I used Morton's tender quick in a wet brine for 10 days. I also used pre-packaged pickling spice in the brine. The result was wonderful, with a nice pink color. One weird thing was that the very middle 1/2 inch was gray. No impact on taste or texture. Cooked it for 3 hours and it was perfect.
Good Chinese restaurant .... that doesn't use MSG? Possible?
Don't know about the research, but I can say that I once had to take my wife to the ER with intractable vomiting and headace after eating a bunch of Kalbi. Most of the Korean marinades have MSG, so we have to be very careful.
North Vietnamese at Quan Bac in SF?
Great info Melanie. I am going to the City in April and think I will plan a stop
First time in New Orleans at Jazz Fest
Last year was my first time at JF. My favorites are all listed above. They were the Cochon de Lait and Soft Shell Crab Po'Boys and the Pheasant Gumbo. I also liked the Red Beans and Rice. Probably not a big deal to NOLA residents, but was wonderful for a California native. I also absolutely lived on Rosemint Ice Tea. So good and so refreshing.
Brodard Chateau - Upscale French Vietnamese in Garden Grove
I went to Bamboo Bistro many times when I worked in Newport Beach. It is outstanding on all levels. They have great lunch specials, good pho, and wonderful noodle dishes. They, like Brodard Chateau, serve coconut juice straight out of the shell. They spring rolls are also very yummy.
Cochon ----what to order?
I went to Cochon last year during Jazz Fest. It was the best meal of my trip. Had the Oyster Roast appetizer and had some great pork dish for dinner. Also a wonderful coconut cake for dessert. Highly recommend!
Ingredients for Homemade Corned Beef in the OC
Thanks. I know where that is and it is not too far.
Berkeley chowhound seeks Orange County recs for this wkend
In Laguna is Sapphire, very good but pricey. We don't have anything the level of Ici here. I would also recommend S Restaurant in Westminster for exceptional Vietnamese food. If you go, ask to have the owner, Stephanie, make recommendations for you.
Ingredients for Homemade Corned Beef in the OC
Does anyone know where to find the curing ingredients (either Morton's Tender Quick or saltpeter) for making homemade corned beef? I would prefer somewhere in South Orange County, but would drive a little ways.
Restaurant in Oakland
I am coming to Oakland for a meeting and staying at the Marriott on Broadway. What suggestions are there for a nice dinner (moderate price) for one? Would like something interesting and local, cuisine not important.
Pre-Fest Breakfast
I am staying at the Embassy Suites near the Convention Center on Julia. Where would be good for a pre-fest breakfast? Nothing too heavy, as I want to leave room for food at the festival.
Avocado Smoothies at Lee's
I go to Lee's down in So Cal a lot. I love the avocado smoothies. My kids think me crazy, but they are delicious. I also like their durian smoothies.
