I lied about the $5 apps at Blair's...it's just down the road at the Edendale Grill.

GLENDALE:
1. fish king. great fish market with prepared food/restaurant section that serves signature "crunch fish" and chips, salads, sides, soups, stews, etc.
2. sevan chicken on glenoaks at kenilworth for rotisserie chicken far superior to zankou.
3. portos. the medianoche preparada sandwich is fantastic. great mousse cakes. beef empanadas, potato balls, fresh fruit danish, fruit tart, chocolate croissant all good.
4. kozy korner. very unassuming little thai place on wilson near central. staff are really friendly and the food just tastes great, and not run of the mill.

PASADENA:
1. azeen's afghani restaurant. hard to beat the karzai-family triumvarate the helmand in SF, Cambridge, MA and Baltimore, MD but this place is pretty darn good. try the kadu (pumpkin).
2. all india cafe. good indian and there aren't too many around these parts.

LA:
1. el huarache azteca in highland park. oval-shaped tortilla grilled and stuffed with refried beans, topped with meat of choice, onions, cilantro and as much as you want of three salsas: green chile, red chile or avocado. delicious aguas frescas, made the original way with fresh fruit, water, sugar and ice.
2. frances bakery in little tokyo will seriously surprise you and leave you with a habit. amazing croissants.
3. blair's in silver lake for $5 delectable appetizers during happy hour. crab cakes, calamari, salads, etc.

agree with others who enjoy la cabañita; blue hen - good soda chanh, bun and pho decent but not authentic per se and expensive relatively speaking; polka; i prefer mamita to lola's for peruvian, also in glendale.

I'm sorry more people haven't suggested places for real tea conossieurs. I want a tea house that serves primarily chinese varietals and is formal in its presentation (yixing pots, aroma cups, etc.) For more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_tea_culture. I would like a menu that has ten or more of each: oolong, black, green and perhaps white. Flavored tea or tea that is primarily drunk with milk (such as ceylon or orange pekoe) is a whole nother story.

I have to say that the marinated black cod and radish I had at Sa Rit Gol was one of the best Korean meals I've ever had. It's in a strip mall, in the joint of the 'L' a little hard to spot - at 3189 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90006.

Soot Bull Jeep, at 3136 W 8th St, Los Angeles, CA 90005, is great for bbq but be forewarned you will stink afterward, though I am too much of a newcomer in LA to say "fabulous" and I've had better in DC.

Porto's is good, but it's a little too casual, too frenetic, and certainly doesn't have seating for a large group. Not sure they even serve dinner.

This is my first post, though I frequent the forum as a passive reader. I know there is a great post on top 5's in northeast LA/Glendale/Pasadena region, but I am stumped to come up with a place that can accomodate 12 or 15 people TONIGHT so hoping you can help. Here are the requirements, in order of importance:

Seriously good food because we're foodies. Both veg and nonveg options (probably something ethnic). Cheap because many of us are students and/or unemployed. Festive, because it's a birthday party (we're roller skating afterwards - a little flahsback).

We were thinking Polka in Eagle Rock because we like the kitsch and think the food is good, but afraid it won't appeal to many people. Also contemplating Mamitas in Glendale though it's not terribly festive and not sure about veg options. Would be willing to travel to Hollywood or Downtown. Please note we're not in the mood for kebabs.
