Good meal delivery in Thornhill

I am sick of the usual Chinese, Pizza or chicken! Does anyone know of some great places for dinners that deliver?

Mary Brown's Chicken

I love their chicken. I think that it tastes so good is because I think they use Peanut oil for the frying. Perhaps that could be the reason that there are not too many around (peanut allergies)??

What's the Difference Between a Conventional and a Convection Oven?

I have a convection oven and I LOVE it!! I cook everything in it (including souffles) and all I do is reduce the temp for the recipe and check it earlier. It makes the best roasted turkey in record time. I use a in/out thermometer which tells me the temp of the oven and of the food, so I adjust it accordingly. The convection oven is usually about 30 - 40 degrees hotter than the setting.

Family foods I thought was normal

Oops, forgot the most important ingredient! Sorry. 1-2 white spanish onions (the strong ones) diced fine. Mix all the ingredients together.

I just made a batch and they are great!

Family foods I thought was normal

Here is the recipe, 3 cups flour, 3 eggs, 3/4 cup oil, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 tsp salt, poppy seeds. Dough will be slightly oily. Roll really thin, cut and bake on an ungreased tray at 350 until nice and brown and crisp. Great with beer!!

She used to make kugel also, served as a side dish. This was the whole meal.

I also remember Onion Cookies. Real thin rolled out dough with diced onion and poppy seeds mixed in and salt sprinkled on top. Baked real crisp. She used to use card shaped (heart, diamond, club, spade) cookie cutters and now that is a family tradition!

I remember our version of Mac and Cheese was hot broad egg noodles with dry cottage cheese crumbled on top and tons of black pepper. I can't even look at that orange stuff!!!

How come no one has mentioned "Grevin" (SP??) Little pieces of chicken skin and fat that are slowly fried in a pan while pouring off the "schmaltz" that was rendered. Sprinkle some salt on those crunchy pieces and you have pure heaven!!! Every Friday night, all three of us kids would be put into the bathtub for our bath and my mom would bring a huge plate of that to snack on.

Leftover rice fried with an egg.

Sardine salad, any lettuce based salad with no dressing but a whole can of sardines crushed in the oil and mixed in...yummm

Best Borscht in TO?

I totally agree with tatai!! Regina's has the best cabbage borscht and beet borscht. All their soups are vegetarian except the cabbage with meat and the chicken soups, so the cabbage with no meat is vegetarian. I love the big chunks of meat in the borscht though!! All of their soups are really good, no preservatives and thick with product.

Memphis SmokeHouse - Thanks chowhounds - review

Well I took the advice of many people on this board and finally had dinner at Memphis Smoke House.

While it is definitely not fine dining, put a plate of meat in front of me and I am one happy girl!! We ordered the Miles Davis Platter because we wanted to taste all I have been reading about. Here is my rundown.

Ribs (ordered dry) were fantastic!! Dry with just the right amount of spices and just the right amount of "bite" Thankfully they were not pre boiled!!

Chicken was a quarter dark while I only had one bite of it, it was moist and succculent.

Pulled pork was moist but it had a slightly rewarmed taste to it. My husband liked it though.

Brisket was not what I expected at all. Being used to my moms "Jewish" style braised till it falls apart brisket, it wasn't my style but it was good.

Wings were excellent, not swimming in sauce and really moist.

Shortribs were nicely sauced and tender.

The baked beans had a nice kick to them and the coleslaw was wonderfully tangy and fresh.

My only complaint was with the cornbread which was really dry, but who needs cornbread when you have all that meat!!

My VERY picky husband really liked it also which is unusual for him. He eats spagetti out of a can, but I love him anyway. The service was brisk, coffee fresh and we would defiinitely eat there again!! Thanks again for the recommendation!!

Please tell me about Hash House a Go Go in Vegas

Oh no!! We won't have a car. Is it that far from the Strip?? We are staying at the Flamingo. I would love to try it while we are there.

Pomegranates - what am I missing?

I must show my husband your post!! He always laughs at me when he sees me opening my pomegranate. I do it EXACTLY like you do although I use my long fingernails more than the knife. I am really fast now also. I find most of the fun of eating one of these is the challenge of taking it completely apart with bursting one of those precious jewels. Please don't ask me how I eat a lobster or a Oh Henry bar!!!

Baking accessories

Nancy's Sweets in Richmond Hill or Creative Cutters in Richmond Hill, both in the Yonge/Elgin Mills area. These are both cake decorating supply stores and have tons of unusual hard to find items. Good luck!

Where to buy tempered chocolate?

Hi Tree, You cannot buy pre tempered chocolate buttons and expect to remelt them and for them to remain tempered. Once you melt them you lose the temper and the process has to be done again. In some of the cake decorating stores, they sell chocolate pastilles (buttons) that you can melt and retemper easily in the microwave. It has been a really long time since I did it but I think it is two thirds melted and then one third stirred in cold until melted. Some times it doesn't work! Nancy's Sweets or Creative Cutters in Richmond Hill should sell the chocolate. You don't want to buy those wilton buttons that are not real chocolate. You won't find the chocolate at the Bulk Barn. Good Luck!!

Looking for spareribs that are not boiled first (don't fall of the bone) Thornhill area

I hate when you go to a restaurant and order ribs and they come to you and they are just falling off the bone. To me that is the lazy way to make them by boiling them first. I don't want boiled meat! I remember my mom made ribs that she broiled in the oven and they were so good, a little bit chewy but still tender and she never boiled them first. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant with good pork spareribs. Price is not an object.

Abruzzo Pizza: Downhill or Just Inconsistent?

I think it has gone downhill. We used to order from there all the time when we lived in Richmond Hill. We have now discovered Dantes on Baythorn. They are closer to Thornhill but they do deliver north. Great pizza and enormous chicken wings!!

KNISHES IN TORONTO

First time posting on this site, hope this goes in the right place!! Want amazing knishes?? Check out www.reginasfinefoods.com Amazing "grandma home made" jewish foods! They will do special orders for you also. If you want more onions in your knishes or something like that call in the mornings and speak to the owner, she will do whatever she can to help you! They bake their potato knishes because now everyone wants things baked, but she will make you fried ones if you ask her to. Their round fried beef knishes are to die for. Everything is cooked in small batches right on the premises so everything is fresh. They are open 7 days a week until 7pm at night so they are easy to go to. They also sell their stuff through Goodfields Meats at Bathurst and Steeles. They also are best known for their cheese blintzes and gefilte fish...yummmmm
