Mixing Bowl in Temescal to stop serving weekend brunch [Oakland]

Menu at Barkada looks great. We will give it a try. And if you have other brunch suggestions, send them my way. Thanks!

Mixing Bowl in Temescal to stop serving weekend brunch [Oakland]

What is the problem with Oakland and excellent brunch? This weekend is the last one when the Mixing Bowl on Telegraph will be serving their brunch menu. Apparently they are shifting away from breakfast hot foods, and towards just pastries for breakfast and just salads/sandwiched for brunch. Therefore, their bacon friend rice is going away, as are their excellent egg dishes. Huge bummer. They'll still be open on weekend mornings, but don't go their expected to get the brunch menu.

Best Xiao Long Bao in the Bay area?

Thank you! How did you search for it? When I searched, I got threads that ended in 2007.

Best Xiao Long Bao in the Bay area?

I can't find any recent threads on this subject so I'm starting a new one (if I've missed a recent one, please let me know). My 8 year old nephew is coming to visit and he has given me the task of locating the best "Shanghai Soup Dumplings" in the area. He was recently in NY and had them, so I assume he's talking about juicy xiao long bao. Any recent suggestions on where to look, either in SF, the east bay, or the south bay? Thanks!

Penrose in Oakland

It's now open. I drove by last night and it looked like they were having some kind of opening celebration. The space looks beautiful, no menu posted yet. They don't take reservations. :-(

Updated recommendations in SF near ACT (Geary and Mason)?

Looking for some more updated recommendations for where to get a good pre-theater dinner within a 1/2 mile or so of ACT (Geary and Mason). We need a place that takes reservations. All cuisines, price ranges considered. Thanks for the suggestions in advance!

Barilla Pasta anti-gay comments

I won't be buying Barilla anymore. I prefer De Cecco anyway, but even if I didn't, Barilla wouldn't get my dollars. He has the right to his opinion and he has the right to express it, but I also have the right to spend my grocery dollars on a different brand of pasta for whatever reason I choose. I prefer to spend those dollars with companies whose social policies and political/human rights views are closer to my own.

Breakfast in Oakland or Emeryville

Does anyone have any news on whether the Local Cafe people are opening up another restaurant somewhere? We have tried many of the suggestions you all provided as a substitute (many thanks). So far our favorite substitute is the Mixing Bowl in Temescal, which has very nice brunch food, but we still miss Local.

LA resident coming to Oakland and SF what's good?

Also, I hear good things about Victory Burger in Oakland.

If you are in the east bay, for pizza try Boot and Shoe Service in Oakland (same owner as Pizzaiolo). Gather in Berkeley also has excellent, if unconventional pizza and is generally an interesting place to eat. It also has a good burger. For Mexican (sort of Cal-Mex), my husband loves the tacos al pastor at Tacubaya in Berkeley.

Breakfast in Oakland or Emeryville

I agree. A good breakfast/brunch place is what the area needs. We have a lot of pizza options. I like Pizzaiolo pizza but we already have Pizzaiolo and Boot & Shoe. No word in the article on why Local closed. It's a mystery.

More restaurant suggestions needed: Oakland and Castro area

For your Thursday lunch: Starbelly (www.starbellysf.com) is in the Castro (on 16th near Market) and they serve a nice lunch. The pizzas are good (many of them have a pork product on them but you can usually get it without) as well as some interesting meatless dishes.
For Friday in Oakland: I second Fusebox, it's quite good. Further afield but near the Rockridge BART station there are lots of places that serve a good lunch.

Duende in Oakland

Just wanted to say that this is a good place for a big group. We went with 10 people. They have a large table that can accomodate a group of this size, and they do a chef's choice tasting menu. The amount of food was more than abundant, and we got to taste a wide variety of things. They'll accomodate special requests as well. Very good sangria, and the arroz negro was really excellent.

Cheap-ish dinner in Berkeley, but still sit-down

OK. Point taken. How about Gecko Gecko on Milvia? Despite the name it has its appeal. Very close to campus, service is pleasant, food is decent Cal/Thai, prices aren't bad. Most noodles, curries, stir-fry dishes are in the $10-$12 range.

Gluten-free vegan option at non-veggie restaurants.

I second the recommendations for Gather. They have excellent, interesting vegan and vegetarian dishes and they clearly mark their gluten-free options. They also have meat options. The quality of the food is always high, and they always seem happy to accomodate reasonable requests. Also, excellent cocktails.

Hummus - SF Dish of the Month July 2013

If you're willing to venture over to Oakland, Amba in Montclair Village on Moraga has fantastic hummus. Seriously. Fantastic. They are closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays so check the calendar before you go. It's the only place I like to eat in Montclair Village, which is lacking in good restaurants for some reason.

Paris 13th arrondissement family-friendly restaurants

The apartment is on the Rue Jeanne d'Arc. We're open to any kind of food. We'll be there for long enough to try lots of things. Perhaps not chic places, as they would be less appropriate for children.

Also, just so we're clear - Local Cafe on Piedmont Ave in Oakland is closed. Local 123 on San Pablo is open and going strong.

Like closed forever. We drove by this morning for our usual breakfast and there was a sign on the door that said something like "Local Cafe is closed, thanks for your patronage, something new is coming soon for lunch and dinner". Huge bummer. So. Other ideas?

We'll be in Paris in August for 2 weeks, staying in the 13th arrondissement. Would love to hear suggestions for good places to eat in any price range, as long as they are okay with kids. Thanks for the advice!

Angers, Loire Valley, France in August?

We are thinking of visiting the Loire Valley this summer, with Angers as home base. Will restaurants and markets in Angers be open in August, or does everything close down? And if things are open, any updated recommendations on food in this area? Many thanks!

Moving to Oakland. Where to eat?

Getting back to all you folks who replied to my original post. For breakfast/brunch, we've tried all the suggestions, but our favorite is Local Cafe on Piedmont Ave (right next to Adesso). Really good biscuits, good eggs benedict, nice little place with nice staff.

Comal - Berkeley

We had a pretty good meal there last night - the bok choy was excellent, and the cucumbers and jicama are great. The rabbit tinga quesadilla and the chile relleno seem to be the two things to order at present. The menu is very seasonal. Also, fantastic Mojito. Seems like a good place for a large group.

Moving to Oakland. Where to eat?

These are great suggestions - looking forward to the move just so we can try all these new places. One more question if anyone has ideas - my husband is an obsessive iced tea drinker. He loves the iced tea from Philz in Berkeley. Anyone? Suggestions? Does Cole Coffee have good iced tea? Until he finds his "place' he will not be content.

Moving to Oakland. Where to eat?

Thanks for the suggestions! By Upper Rockridge I mean the hills up above College Ave off of the Broadway Terrace exit from 13. Also, Montclair isn't far, nor is Piedmont Ave. I really appreciate the suggestions!

Moving to Oakland. Where to eat?

Help! We are moving to Oakland (upper Rockridge area) from Berkeley (north Berkeley/Solano). This may not seem like a big move, but for us it seems huge. The biggest question is where to go for our usual meals out. Particularly, breakfast/brunch and casual dinner with kids. The places we like around our current neighborhood are:
For brunch, Gorilla Cafe; Jimmy Beans; Venus
For coffee, Local 123 and Philz
For special occasions or date night, Gather and Cesar
For kid-friendly restaurants, Kirin, Paisan Pizza, Jerusalem Organic Kitchen
Also looking for good bagels, Thai and Korean. And we enjoy the Berkeley Off-the-Grid event on Wednesday nights.
If you can suggest good substitutes, particularly for our breakfast places, we'd be grateful!
