New Chinese resto opening in Sacto (The Kitchen)
I've eaten at both and think Kings Palace is easly as good.
Peking Duck Pancakes
Is there something I can pick up at a grocery store to cover this or do I have to make them from scratich?
Vietnamese take out in Sacto
I'm having some plumbing work done over here (read no water) so it was take out for me last night. I like 'Pho Sai Gon' at 5304 Stockton Blvd so I gave them a call. I ordered # 29, BBQ Prawn w/Rice Vermicelli. Calling the 35-40 count shrimp "prawns" is a bit of a stretch but it sure was good. What I got was one of those foam plastic boxs with room temp rice noodles, a baggie with lettuce and sliced carrots, ~10 BBQ shrimp, a small container of the sauce (rice vinegar, hot pepper flakes, ??? I don't know what's in it but it's good) and some chopped peanuts for garnish. It was all disassembled so nothing got soggy in transport. Get a bowl and add the various ingredients in proportions that makes you happy, add a little hosin sacue, soy sauce and some hot chilli oil (I have them in my pantry) and you have a nice warm summer evening repast. Oh, did I mention a glass of chilled white wine? I'll just have to wait for the water to get turned back on to wash that bowl.
I like this place, I eat lunch there often 'cuz it's close and good. Happy hounding.

Short trip to the Berkeley area
I'm comming from Sacramento so a couple more miles to Berkeley is no problem. At the Nantucket I had Fried Calamari strips. It was the frozen calamari steak cut into strips and deeep fried. The veggies were cooked "al la mom" wayyyyy over done. All in all not very good.
Thanks for all the advice everyone. I'm sure I'll do better this time.

Short trip to the Berkeley area
I'll be in El Cerrito next week and am looking for a good lunch spot. I stopped at the Nantucket under the bridge in Crockett earlier this week and it was a miss. I'm open to any cuisine, Chinese, Japanese, American. Just good. Thanks,
Roberto
Cabeza Tacos Sacramento
I like La Favorita. They are at Franklin Blvd north of Florin on the east side (#1) and Stockton Blvd north of Fruitridge on the west side (#2). #2 is in front of the K Mart there.

Where to find Scotch Bonnet peppers in Sac?
I saw them at Corti's about an hour ago.

Best Breakfast in Sacramento?
I like the Fox and Goose too. The others I'd suggest would be The Uptown Cafe (I love their liver and onions) on Del Paso Blvd (just south of Arden on the west side of the street) and another little place I can't remember the name of on north 16th st just before it turns into a freeway. They have steak and eggs for about five bucks. It's on the east side of north 16th right after the discount carpet places. Sorry I can't be more specific. Good luck,

Pancho's Mexican Grill in Sacramento
I was just turned on to this place sunday. Was told the Posle was good and boy was it. They were very generous. I did a take out. "Would you like some chips?" So they gave me some chips, salsa, a small container of oregano, a small baggie with chopped onions and lettuce and four or five quarters of lime. It was very good. Eight bucks and a dollar tip. Enough for dinner and a lunch. I recommend this place. I'll be going back.

Urgent, Hungry Celeste, a turkey gumbo question for you please!
I do it uncovered. The skimming happens pretty early in the process (first 15 to 30 minutes) then you can cover it. I put the lid half on and half off if you know what I mean. The turkey, already being cooked, goes in right at the end just to get it hot.

Sourdough Pancakes
Gee, I don't have a Waring Pro Belgian Waffle Maker. I hate it when that happens! :-( I have a 60's Looney Tune Waffle Maker. It's Sylvester's head on the outside and when you open him up Tweety Bird's inside his mouth. Poor Tweety. The kids eat dozens of him when ever they can.
I mean they don't even know who Sylvester and Tweety Bird are. They get the joke though. :-)
Happy Thanksgiving, Roberto
Beans again
What ever happened to the bean string that was started a few days ago? I did a bean search on the home cooking site and got 2100 hits so that wasn't much help.
The question was: Which beans to use for what?
I tried to keep an eye on it but it just went away.
I went shopping yesterday and wrote this down. Beans for about $2.90 a pound dry. Red Lentels, Lupin, Fava, Cranberry, Canellini, Flagolets, Green Lentels and Turtle Beans.
Beans for about $1.09 a pound dry. Black, Pink, Great Notrhern, Pinto, Small White and Red Kidney.
All were packaged in two pound bags. This leads me to believe that a comprehensive tasting would be pretty expensive. Not to talk about how many little pots it would take!
What does a fella do?
Roberto
p.s. This wasn't all the beans they had by far. Mucho mas...
what's the diff between dried beans and which are good for what?
This a good question and I'm looking forward to responses. Recently I've been using canned beans. I'm of the rinse the goop off and use a chicken broth crowd.
My favorite is the S&W Premium White Bean. They are small and can be used in a number of ways. Sweet with brown sugar, maple surup, Steens etc., etc., ... or savory (meaning less sweet).
I was looking at about 6 types of dried beans yesterday and had the same question you have. At my local farmers market (Sacramento CA) there is a producer who is showing up with "heirloom beans" Anazi is one of them. A tasting is a good idea but not cheap with these guys.
Another favorite is fresh frozen beans. I find limas and blackeye peas here. But your question is what to use for what? I just do it by the seat of my pants. That, in my case, gives me quite a bit of latitude! :-)
Again, I'm looking forward to hound cooks input.

Hong Kong Cafe vs. Hong Kong Restaurant
Yeah, I avoid the Hong Kong Cafe too. Hasn't been any good for years if then.

Election party eats?
I would include a Chilian Blue Bean dish. It would contribute to the gas that comes out of that place!

Best breakfast in Sacramento - Fox and Goose

Best breakfast in Sacramento - Fox and Goose
My favorite at the Fox & Goose is their tuesday lunch special, Bangers and Mash. I've been eating it for years and it's always great. Their breakfasts are also very good. They used to have great dinners on friday and saturday nights. Roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding, leg of lamb w/homemade mint sauce. Man them were the good ole days. I'm dating myself so I'll stop.

Bean soups
There is a great Senate White Bean Soup that is served in the congressional restaurant to our senators and assembly members. It's available all over the net, just do a Google on it.
I think it accounts for all the hot gas that comes out of the place!!!

Acequia in Visalia - Go there immediately
Great post Pate. I'm planning on doing a drive down 99 pretty soon myself and will stop and check the place out.
Thanks, Roberto
quick (shorthand) restaurant bill calculations - rules of thumb
I don't see how this "double-double" system could account for the wide range of drinks costs.
I too am in California and I prefer the cost plus double the tax for a tip. That's about 17/18%, if your want to do 20% that's easy math.

Looking for new places to find ingredients in Sacramento
Yes, that's the place, under the freeway. The oysters are great. Fresh from Tomalas Bay. Salmon, if it's still there, is great. I stay away from the fish stuff at the s/w corner, doesn't look too good to me. I'd like another opinion on that actually.
They still have peaches!!!
Yes, let's do another taco run. Actually I'm on my way to La Favorito for a couple of taco's right now.
Nice to see ya Nick. Have fun at Apple hill.

Chow Dinner at Wakano Ura (Sacto Area)
Hewn this is a very old post. Two years old in fact. It was a pretty good dinner with very little in the way of ambiance. We are setting up another get together here in Sacto but since the moderaters discourge organizing them on this site I suggest you go to sacramentofoodgroup.org to see what's happening locally.

Looking for new places to find ingredients in Sacramento
Nick, nice to see you again. Yes I too have found the place on Land Park and Sutterville has changed hands and it's not any good at all IMHO. Well ok, not so H. The seafood at the farmers market is the best deal so long as you stay away from the big booth on the south west corner. But the salmon, oysters and stuff from specialists is great. Too bad the salmon is over. Just too fished out. Hope to see you again sometime. That taco run you set up was memorable.

Sacto chow-in at Everett & Jones BBQ?
I'm in. I live in Sacto and probably close to the place you are talking about. Check out www.sacramentofoodgroup.org You might find some interested people.
