Rooneys Long Branch. Really?

These are the posts that make me wish that CH had a "like" button. Very funny.

Rooneys Long Branch. Really?

Thanks for the tip, however it wasn't just the price of the food but the quality also. I think I will stick to drinks at the bar and dinner elsewhere.

Rooneys Long Branch. Really?

I had dinner at Rooneys tonight (not my choice). I had been there in the past & it was always mediocre at best. First , I could not believe how expensive it is. Now, I do not mind paying a lot for my food at a place like Nicholas, where I know I am going to have a great food experience. But I was skeptical as I read Rooneys menu. $45 for lobster risotto? $40 for a piece of halibut? $59 for crab legs? I ended up ordering the broiled seafood dish. It was okay if you don't mind overcooked seafood & bland rice. Add in the stale dinner rolls & the dirty bathroom to round out my sad dining experience. On a positive note, the view of the ocean was wonderful.

Where to buy Thai ingredients in NJ

I tried quite a few places (NJ & NY) for Thai eggplant ( the little round green ones that look like tiny green tomatoes) but could never find them. I am not sure if I was looking out of season or if they are just not available. Has anyone seen them?

I have enjoyed wines from Unionville and Silver Decoy. Give them a try-it's fun to taste wines.

Do you have an amazing SAUCE for fish tacos? Please share!

I love salsa verde on my fish tacos. I put tomatillos, white onion, garlic, jalapeƱo & cilantro in a blender & then simmer it on the stove for about 10 minutes. When it cools, add some lime juice. Delicious.

Microwave popcorn in brown paper bags

I do it all the time too-which is why I was so surprised when I saw it in the manual.

Microwave popcorn in brown paper bags

I love using brown paper bags to pop popcorn in the microwave, but my new microwave manual states you should not use brown paper bags in the microwave. There are conflicting opinions about this on the web, but I cannot find the reasoning behind it. Thoughts?

Forno's of Spain in Newark

I was there recently with a friend. The menu is enormous and I had a hard time deciding. The waiter suggested the shrimp stuffed with crabmeat. It came swimming in a cream sauce which I did not expect nor did I enjoy. I was expecting some a nice garlicky bread crumb stuffing but I am not exactly sure what it was held together with ( more cream?). My friend ordered the lamb chops and said they were good. The portions were huge and you get a lot of extras on the table-salad, olives, broccoli, bread, and warm potato chips. Overall, not a bad meal but would definitely order something else if I were to go there again.

Doris and Eds or Fromagerie?

So we decided to try the Fromagerie. We were there on a busy Saturday, although I am sure they are busy on most Saturday nights. Unfortunately, I think this affected both the food and the service (or timing of the food, which may not have been the server's fault).

We started at the bar. I had a glass of wine and some of my fellow diners enjoyed some of the DBF Specialty Cocktails. The bartender was funny and attentive. Our reservations were for 6:45 and they sat us on time.

Most of us took advantage of the RW menu. We started off on a positive note with the apps. I had the grilled octopus which was cooked nicely and served on top of mashed potatoes and also had some lamb bacon sprinkled over the top. While I am a fan of bacon, it might not have needed it, although I think I get why something salty was added to the dish. The pea flan and the hearts of escarole salad were also described as very good.

For our entrees, we ordered the corn meal crusted skate wing, the 1/2 chicken with green spaetzle, and the salmon. The happiest diner of the night was the one that ordered from the regular menu. She had the mustard crusted tuna with lobster dumplings and truly enjoyed every bite. I didn't get any feedback on the salmon dish. I had the skatewing and it was mediocre. The dish was bland looking (beige) and my fish was a little overcooked. The trumpet mushrooms were kind of tough. The baby artichokes were yummy and my favorite part of the dish. I think there was supposed to be some sort of lemon sauce on the dish, but I could not find it. It was also a tad salty.

My two fellow diners that had the chicken dishes had to send them back because they were undercooked. When the dishes returned to the table, they were still undercooked. One diner opted for a salad and the other opted to eat around it and enjoyed her spaetzle and the chicken breast portion of her 1/2 chicken. We also ordered sides of truffle frites and sauteed spinach. The truffle fries came out first and were cold. We sent them back and did not see them until after most of us were done with our meals. When they came back they were warmer but not hot. The spinach came out after that.

The desserts were all tasty, but nothing was a "you must try this" kind of dish.

Both the uneaten chicken dish and the sides were taken off the bill.

I definitely expected better. Time to try Dish!

Doris and Eds or Fromagerie?

I was originally thinking Dish in Red Bank before I realized it was restaurant week. I might go back to that idea (I have never been but it gets positive reviews here) or give Fromagerie a try. I will report back either way. Thanks!

I am considering trying either Doris and Eds or Fromagerie during this round of restaurant week. Any thoughts on either of these places or another restaurant week offering? I have eaten at both restaurants but both visits were long, long ago.

Does anyone know where I can get Banh Mi in Monmouth County? To be honest I have never tried one of these sandwiches but keep seeing clips about them on Food Network & they look delicious.

Trader Joe's to open in Monmouth Co

Tay-I disagree that it is overpriced. I think they offer quality merchandise at very reasonable prices. I am looking forward to comparing prices with our local stores. Plus, they offer a friendly atmosphere & some items you might not find at other stores.

Jeffrey's in Westfield

So, it was a nice night out with the girls--nothing great but nothing terrible. Two of us had a gnocchi special with braised pork and chestnuts. It was tasty but needed something--maybe an additional spice or some more texture (the pork, gnocchi and chestnuts were all kind of mushy). Other dishes were fish and chips and hanger steak. The steak was a little chewy but the sauce was pretty good. It came with candied pecans on top (which the kitchen forgot but were added when we asked). I am not sure I "got" the candied pecans on steak--it was strange to me. The fish n chips were okay too....but the kitchen forgot the side of vinegar and it was never brought to the table even though we asked for it. The service was friendly and they wanted to please, but I thnk they missed on a few points (refilling water and coffee and bringing forgotten items). A cheese plate for a starter was a highlight, especially since all the cheeses were labeled and they brought a "cheat sheet" that described them. Nice touch. The desserts were pretty good too, especially with the addition of their homemade ice cream. I noticed that quite a few diners at other tables ordered the Kobe beef burger....so I am wondering if that is one of their top dishes. My favorite place to go in Westfield is still Trader Joes.

Dinner between Wall and Freehold

Legends Shogun on 34 in Wall has pretty good sushi. Park Avenue Bistro in Freehold has a varied menu and if you like Mexican, El Meson in Freehold is popular.

Do we want to conduct a NJ top restaurant poll on this board?

Since just the idea of doing a poll has generated so much heat, imagine how much fun we will have doing the actual poll?

Ramen in Monmouth County?

I recently went into Ming Ying and ordered the noodle soup with pork and shrimp dumplings. The woman at the counter apologized for the long wait-----they were making the dumplings from scratch. It was well worth the wait----the soup, especially the dumplings were delicious. The shrimp inside the dumplings were so tasty, I can't wait to go back and order it again. I ordered takeout, so the broth was in a separate contained from the rest of the soup ingredients, which was a nice touch. I also tried the Thai fried rice with beef and that was also very good. I can't wait to try more items on their menu!

Sawa in Eatontonwn- Gotta be a contender for best sushi in the area

I agree, I always find the fish to be very fresh there. I love the white tuna. I know a lot of people like Kanji, but I prefer Sawa.

Need Advice on Eately Restaurants

I agree with the above posts. The beauty of Eataly is that you can have an appetizer at La Piazza (mostly stand up tables) and then your next course at La Pizza & Pasta or another area you listed above, and then perhaps move to the coffee and gelato section for dessert....and, well, you get the idea. Not really the place for a large group of people. Best with a few of your best foodie friends.
