NOLA at Christmas...

My wife and I are thinking of heading back to New Orleans but this time at Christmas.

My question is are most restaurants open during the holidays? We have no family there so would be on our own and eating out daily.

Also, any events of note that we need to know about? I don't think we can swing both Christmas and New Years so specifically Christmas.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

restaurant advice - mother in law in town...

my mother in law is coming to town and she'd like to take us to a nice dinner to celebrate the life of her mother that passed recently. We're looking for seafood with an atmosphere where we can talk. Not too loud. Of course, we'd like the food to be exceptional with the prices reasonable.

My wife and I moved to Alameda 5 years ago and haven't kept up with the best of the best. San Francisco preferable but Oakland works as well.

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I have a co-worker that is vegetarian coming to your fine town on Friday. I'm not a veggie so don't know of restaurant recommendations for her. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Some dining recommendations please...

we will have a car one or two days as I want my wife to see some of the plantations and drive down around the swamps. maybe a tour or two. I know this is a food only board but also was wondering about recommendations on best ideas for plantation homes and/or swamp tours. neither of us are much on bus guided tours, etc.

cabs are definitely OK. Clancys I keep hearing about so we'll definitely have to work that in. We've done the magazine st. walk (actually all the way from the quarter on a beautiful 75 degree day in October). Will definitely do that again.

thanks and please keep them coming.

Some dining recommendations please...

We will be in New Orleans for 5 nights in mid-october. We have a few ideas set in stone and are looking for suggestions for the remaining.

Tues. Dinner Mr. B's - this is a tradition. Land, check-in at hotel, get a cocktail at the carousel bar and on to Mr. B's for BBQ shrimp. The perfect welcome to New Orleans, relax and enjoy yourself intro.

Wed. lunch will either be a muffuletta from central grocery or a poboy from ??? Dinner, I'm thinking Cochon for a sampling of appetizers. We're going to a show at the howlin' wolf later in the evening. Are these two close to each other? If not, any other recommendations local to the club?

Thurs. lunch - ??? Don't want to load up too heavily as dinner is at August. What is a must have dish at August?

Friday and Saturday are wide open. Any suggestions here are much appreciated. Probably more casual/local fare.

Sunday lunch - ??? Sunday dinner at original Emeril's. I haven't been there in about 17 years but reading the boards has made me want to check it out again. My wife has never been and is a fan. What are the Can not miss dishes here.

Thanks in advance to all. We're seriously looking forward to this wonderful get away.

hands down favorite dishes at both August and Brigtsens

Hi all,

My wife and i will be in town for Voodoo. We have two nights in town before it starts and have reservations at both brigtsens and August. my question is what are you favorites at each place?

Brigtsens: My wife will be having the seafood platter as it's her favorite. I've had the paneed rabbit and the duck and am looking for something new.

We've never been to August.

Thanks in advance.

our 10th anniversary is on 9/12 as well. Congrats! Brigtsen's is a must for dinner one night and Mr.b's BBQ shrimp is another. Enjoy your trip!

voodoofest - good eats?

We will be in town for our second consecutive voodoofest. Last year, unlike jazzfest, we were underwhelmed by the food selection. Of course, there's a good chance we missed the highlights. Does anyone have any must visit recommendations on the grounds?

Thanks in advance.

The Best Thing You Ever Ate: New Orleans

it was mentioned above and breaks the rules slightly but the cochon de lait poboy from jazzfest has haunted my dreams (in the best way possible) since 1988. it's what cemented my love affair with new orleans.

two questions for first night in town...

thanks for this. we love coop's but more as a lunch option. the bbq shrimp is my favorite as well as the fried oyster with tasso hollandaise. was wondering about some of the other menu items. we'll definitely check out Mandina's too.

what's in an oyster loaf besides oysters? always wondered.

two questions for first night in town...

Hi all,

The last couple times my wife and I have come into town (from San francisco, so usually late afternoon/early evening landing), we've ended up at Mr. B's for first night dinner. No complaints as they're pretty consistently tasty.

1st question: What are your favorites at Mr. B's?

2nd question: Can you recommend an alternative where we don't need a reservation and don't need to dress up. Preferably in the quarter or CBD as we'll have been traveling all day, pretty grubby and not going to want to travel too far the first night. We'll be in town for 6 nights so plenty of time for the A list restaurants.

Also, this will be Tuesday before Voodoo Fest.

Thanks!

voodoofest ideas

thank you all. I know that I'm a lucky man. no doubt. I will admit to a bit of prodding on the trip itself but the VIP were her idea entirely. I love the idea of Liuzza's before the show and i'll check into martinique bistro. please keep them coming. I'm so excited.

voodoofest ideas

my wonderful wife gave us a week surrounding voodoofest for my 40th. she even sprung for the oh my $hit, way too expensive vip tix (any advice here as to worth it?). i'd like to thank her back with amazing food. brightsen's is always a must. it looks like hrebsaint is another. she's intrigued with john besh from food network. good idea? anything good to explore for dinner in local surrounds after leaving voodoofest? also, have been trolling club sites for music. seems too ealry. any suggestions as to night time musical mayhem?

thanks in advance
