Spot Prawns

i think ive seen some in tanks at t&t and foody already. they did not seem very lively though... could they be some other type of live shrimp?

The best of Markham and Richmond Hill

sweet basil is wayyyyyy too sweet... i.e. pad thai, thai ice tea.... and their tom yung is super sour? the chef's taste bud must be quite numb

wine deals

fisherman's clubhouse has $5 corkage everyday

Where to eat in Ottawa?

you can also try crispy chips for poutine... the curds to cheese ratio is like 1:1, and the cruds are always squeaky

woodlot walk in

ok thanks, we'll think of a back up plan

woodlot walk in

Has anyone tried to get a seat at woodlot on friday nights by walking in at around 7-8ish? I am just wondering if they have line ups or is it pretty easy to get a seat these days.

Cumbrae's for my man on Valentine's...suggestions on cuts, info on pricing?

I was there recently and asked about the ribeyes since it was closing and none was displayed.. they said 24.99/lb, i assume that is the 40 day aged one?

the burgers there are pretty good too... dont think it even needs cooking, i tried a tiny raw piece and it was seasoned nicely... wonder if you can use it as tartare... cooked it super rare with no toppings and a bun, pretty tasty.

Big Meal, a new Japanese all-you-can-eat with table service

Didn't know where to eat on thursday so decided to try this place to see what everyone is talking about. I havent had AYCE japanese for a few years, but I think this place is pretty good. Compared to what i remember, the sashimi selection is a bit larger with things like squid, big eye tuna, supposed sweet shrimp and octopus (i kept ordering squid and octopus and it never shows up... eventually asked about it and they said they were out, wish they just tell you that when they noticed you ordered it)... quality of the sashimi is not bad for AYCE, though salmon was a bit bland for some reason, yet still seemed fresh. The chef's special on the menu says 1 item per person, but they allow you to order as much as you like. The specials were crab legs, salmon roe sushi (not very fresh) , baked scallop thingy, red tuna, shrimp with quail egg... the cooked beef items like beef rolls and short ribs aren't very good... desserts so so, sesame ice cream weird blue colour and didnt taste like black sesame... service was not as slow as everyone said, though only 6 or so other tables... i also noticed the plating isnt as nice as the pictures you guys took, so maybe they are going for speed rather than fancy plating now...all in all not bad, if i had to eat at an AYCE resturant in toronto again i would probably go back... thanks Aleta for recommending it

Solo Sushi Ya -- Suffering a Kates Effect?

it would make me feel better...

anyways, i was also suprised by the lack of selection of fish at solo.. from the a la cart menu it only listed fishes that are usually found at sushi buffet resturants, and i was surprised i received nothing different on the set menu..

Solo Sushi Ya -- Suffering a Kates Effect?

my biggest problem was that it wasnt tasty and that salmon was in almost every course, though my impression was that an omakase at a japanese resturant would be that you receive higher quality items than a la cart, or what is most fresh that day, rather than be part of a resturant's merchandising night. if it tasted good, i wouldnt have minded the scraps, but it wasnt so i complain about it...

diamond crystal kosher salt

costco has it, i am not sure of the price though.

Solo Sushi Ya -- Suffering a Kates Effect?

i went a few months ago for the omakase in newmarket and was quite disappointed. selection of sashimi was very common and quality wasnt too high.. also, most of the dishes featured salmon (chawanmushi with overcooked salmon bits, a very salty salmon "crab cake"...) seemed like the omakase was more of a way of using up the leftover salmon bits off the salmon skeleton than a meal of the best/most fresh items the chef had...

ISO MALTODEXTRIN for Root Beer and Beer Making

Taipei Japanese

Hello,

Gonna be a Taipei for 4 days and am curious about a few things:

- what is the board favourite for quality and variety of sushi/sashimi?

-What is considered the best of the Japanese resturants that have a taiwanese accent?

- what types of specialty Japanese resturants/food stalls are particularly good? I read about one on the board called Fei Chien Ou (or Hizen-Ya in Japanese) for unagi, are there more? i haven't been to japan so the only similar comparison to what i am asking would be to new york's hakata tonton for the collengen hot pot, takashi for the offal grilling, yakitori totto for yakitori, totto ramen for ramen... or anything other type?

Crocodile Bangkok

I just assumed there would be due to all the farming for their leather... and also a long time ago a friend told me he had crocodile in thailand and it was really good (dont know where this old friend is any more)

Crocodile Bangkok

O, I am from Toronto, Canada and crocodile is available frozen here, or a tail can be ordered fresh from a butcher, but i was hoping bangkok would have some resturants that had some preparations with it besides the deep fryed little bits that ive seen in toronto. I read the crocodile farms might have it, but not sure how far outside bangkok that would be... would have prefered a place that just did it normally, but i guess maybe crocodile isnt a normal protein source in thailand?

Crocodile Bangkok

Hi,

are there any resturants/street food stalls that specialize in crocodile meat in bangkok? doesnt seem like there are mention of it on chowhoud.

Liberte Greek Yogurt

ive tried it.. doesnt taste like yogurt from greece... but i dont think any 0% MF yogurts do either, even the stokadis brand..

PHO without MSG

ive made pho myself without msg that tasted much better than any msg soup... maybe they are just being cheap with the amount of bones they use in the broth?

pho dau bo on finch west has no msg i think

Jonah Crab Claws

t&t has whole johan crabs sometimes, they are gift wrapped in a ribbon

The Beast Tasting Menu - Whole Beast

I was wondering about the Beast's regular menu in general. For the prices that i am seeing, are the dishes shared plates (tapas?)?

Supposedly best Shanghainese food in Toronto - Forgettable!!!!!

tried ala kitchen a while ago, it wasnt particularly good, didnt know it was considered the best shanghainese resturant in toronto??? there isnt anything better in town? that seems sad...

Goody’s Diner – Finally an Ontario candidate for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives… and it’s in Scarborough

I have ordered the Goody Burger medium rare, i even heard the server telling the two cooks our burger was supposed to be medium rare, but it still came out well done.. still juicy though, but meat wasnt really the most flavourful ive had, and didnt seem particularly special... ill say it is decent for 9 bucks though, but maybe too much stuff.. .if i ever order it again ill try plain with caramelized onions...

i liked the lobster bisque, and the ceasar salad that comes with the burger seemed homemade and tasty, though a bit salty...

the ice cream float is a can of mug with no name brand ice cream so i guess that is why it is 2.5....

if i ever have time to come back i might try the other diner items, but the burgers doesnt seem that special aside from the mega toppings.

Scarborough Rib Fest this weekend.

didnt think it was particularly good.. ribs were overcooked to mush and overly sauced, with no hint of smoke whatsoever...

aurora farmers market wood fire pizza

just to follow up, went this saturday and there was no pizxza guy whatsoever... maybe it was another farmers market or he just doesnt do it anymore...
