Taco Maria brick + mortar 1st Report, Costa Mesa - Excellent Tasting Menu

Yes....the current dessert is more of a bite (a good one at that) but as you guys mentioned, the stakes are going to be higher as customers' expectations will also be inflated.

Taco Maria brick + mortar 1st Report, Costa Mesa - Excellent Tasting Menu

Thanks for the heads up. Was afraid of the price hike coming...just like with gas!

No. 1 Charcoal BBQ - Monterey Park

I ran a search for it before I posted but didn't result in your original one. That's funny that they take Chinese money... I wonder if I'd get a funny look if I show up with dollar bills.

Lol.... While mutton soup sounds good in this weather, I'll take my beat up car elsewhere then.

Driving from LA to SF on 101, where to stop?

I'll throw in something very simple for breakfast in Solvang. There's Paula's Pancake House (next door is Olsen's Bakery) for pancakes, etc. and Solvang Restaurant for Danish donuts and sausage. Or you can just grab coffee and pastry goods at Olsen's and be done with it. You'll meet your carb requirement for the ye....day. :)

No. 1 Charcoal BBQ - Monterey Park

Just curious if anyone has tried this place? Just noticed it as we drove down Garfield and it looks like it's been open since October.

Monrovia to Long Beach for Breakfast on Sunday?

Was there for brunch on Sunday and the wait wasn't that bad...and even if it takes a while it's a pretty cool spot to hang out until they call your name.

Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - February 2015 [old]

I thought y'all were talking about the Pesto Genova...I looked in my fridge and checked the ingredients and was like, no potato ingredients here! lol

Recs for Sushi and More in Long Beach?

For sushi in Long Beach I'll also add Kinoya.

Restaurants with chef's counter seating (Kappo-style)

Can't see much of the kitchen but the chef will come out and chat with you all you want when at the chef's table....Union.

Mr Taster is leaving Los Angeles!

Haha....no crickets. You just can't hear folks like me discussing with ppl (in real life) your take on a proper pastrami sam, muffuletta, and the smoothness of Broguiere's milk. :)

Mr Taster is leaving Los Angeles!

Mr. Taster, congrats on the new job! You were among my biggest influences when I first started reading Chowhound back in 2005 (approx) so I thank you for your entertaining and enlightening posts throughout the years on the LA board. I felt at "home" too when I found that there were others like me. :) I will miss seeing your posts.

Excellent Peruvian food in L.A.?

I like Mario's too. El Rocoto is a good place for those wanting a "nicer" atmosphere and a variety of dishes to choose from... like halibut sashimi.

Kooky, but good - Clearman's Steak N Stein (Pico Rivera)

Oh cool. Well as far as I remember Steak n' Stein does not offer rice pilaf.

Kooky, but good - Clearman's Steak N Stein (Pico Rivera)

I believe North Woods serves rice pilaf while Steak n' Stein serves baked potatoes.

Favorite Asian-Style pastries in/around SGV?

Nope. I'm wrong...we had a strawberry half moon, taro marbled, and a chocolate something something...the favorites were the first two.

Favorite Asian-Style pastries in/around SGV?

I've tried to stayed away from pastries but I used to go to Kee Wah regularly... My family liked the half moon cakes from 85C most recently (the 'regular' one and the strawberry one) along with the marbled taro cake.

What are some of your favorite kitchen tricks that you'd be hesitant to admit to foodies?

I used your secret recipe for tonight's dinner and loved it... Thank you. :)

L.A. Dish of the Month, January 2015 -- CHILI

Went to Portillo's in Buena Park and tried their chili dog... theirs has beans in it. It had a bit of a spicy kick to it that I liked. It wasn't a gloppy mess of something too spicy or sweet...or bland. It was simple and good.

Best Chinese Noodles in L.A.

"Avoid popcorn chicken at Quest Cafe at all cost."

Uh oh. Gastro issue?

Didn't know about Omar's...my colleague got lunch from there a couple weeks ago so must be a recent thing.

*lol* all I know is that I feel blessed to have incredible Chinese food options so close to home.

Best Chinese Noodles in L.A.

I've been eating lunch more regularly around the Artesia area so now I'm a bit more familiar... though definitely still learning. I'm a little confused about Aga because from the reviews on Yelp it's been open for a while (2013?) yet yesterday I noticed a "Soft Opening" sign.... I went inside and took a look at their menu. I was already picking up food from Muse so I didn't order anything. I didn't notice the sign last week.

The "Gastro" thing...

They were free range, organic, and gluten-free!

When do you stop using nonstick pans?

At less that $30 this is a great deal. Think I'll buy 2 as well. Thanks for the tip!

The "Gastro" thing...

I'm noticing a lot of poke. I like poke. Had poke tacos at Amor Y Tacos. Tasty, but still...

Looking for a nice dinner in North OC area.

This place has been on my bookmarks for a while but I haven't been, although my friend has eaten there a few times with his family and they liked it... pictures on yelp look good.

Place to buy fresh seafood mix in LA?

Mmm 7 Mares soup....

Kirin to reimburse misled consumers

Reminds me of labeling of other things like olive oils and even tomatoes. If the source is important to the consumer then they gotta pay closer attention.
