Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - November 2014

Daylight Savings Time will soon end for most of us, which some consider the official start of the fall to winter transition and the ushering in of the wonderful Holiday Season. I'm sure TJ's will have a bounty of holiday products, both new and old to highlight the season.

What items have you tried recently and would you rate them a YAY, MEH or NAY?

Also check out the dedicated Best Seasonal/Holiday items thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9925...)

Pulled pork--better in crock pot or dutch oven?

I agree as well, the crock pot version of most dishes I've tried both ways always seems to be missing something

Surprisingly simple ingredients you make, never buy

You can use extra light olive oil

That could work similar to roasted Brussels sprouts. They look so strange :)

YAY - Kona coffee, I love Kona coffee and this stuff is great. I only tasted it as I don't drink coffee much anymore but might buy it next week to keep on hand for those rare moments.

Also a new find - Kale sprouts. My plan is to keep it simple and saute with olive oil and garlic, any other ideas?

Lamb sirloin steaks

Thanks for the tips! It's a cut I've never seen before but it sounds like it's a good one

Lamb sirloin steaks

I have been gifted several lamb sirloin steaks. Can I quick sear, pan-roast like loin chops? If not, any good ideas for this cut?

What's for Dinner #332 - The Wee Ghosties and Goblins Edition!

I often write little notes to myself about meals I've made since I'm so indecisive and it helps when I can't remember "hmm, was the strip steak better from Wegmans or Whole Foods" and just sent myself an email "great ending to a long day, steak was delicious, one of the best I've had in a while." Have to find the silver lining when you can :)

So true...currently in a lovely battle with the insurance company for full-time care which apparently they have randomly decided after 8 years is no longer necessary. Fortunately the MS has wiped out most of her cognition so while she can converse with us and make some sense, she doesn't remember much about all of the medical/financial details that frustrate the rest of us although of course she knows what her life is like and it's unpleasant for her.

It's just me, the lovely only child...

Thanks.

A cuddly kitty at the door was a welcome delight!

Thanks. One of the greatest lessons my grandmother taught me before she died is to take care of yourself no matter what. She would want me to enjoy a good dinner and would tell me to not let the stress affect my own health as neglecting my own needs is not helpful to me or anyone else.

I just found out some unfortunate news about my mom's current health (long term MS now with even more complications) and a lot of decisions need to be made which is quite overwhelming. I don't rattle easily but it's been a very rough day. I woke up super excited for steak night and now don't really have much of an appetite but I think if nothing else I should at least sit down to a potentially belly pleasing dinner and try to distract myself. So WFD will be a hunky strip steak that has been hanging out in the fridge with a salt rub finished with as much butter as my little heart desires with bacon and onion braised green beans. The plan was an early bed time but I'll likely find myself with a spoon and a jar of almond butter for dessert!

The turkey looks amazing! I'm counting down the days until Thanksgiving, I can't wait.

Are your eyes bigger than your stomach ?

Never said anything was wrong with it :) it's not leftovers it's basic supplies, I load up as if I need that much cheese or vegetables for an entire family but I seem to approach my fridge and pantry as a "what if" situation so just in case I can't leave this house I might need to utilize 3 of the same cheese :)

Marcona Almonds - Inedible?

I've had several bags where at least 1/4 bag is awfully bitter

Are your eyes bigger than your stomach ?

Yea that's what I meant to say! My fridge is a danger zone, I stuff it full as if I'm feeding four times the number of people.

Marcona Almonds - Inedible?

I have now experienced the bitter almond phenomenon on multiple occasions with the recent bags of TJs marcona almonds.

Yea, I do a lot of "ooh that looks good, nevermind, back on the shelf." At least the products can stimulate new ideas (e.g. mix Harissa with sardines).

Are your eyes bigger than your stomach ?

My eyes are bigger than my stomach but I usually only make enough for a single meal. I rarely have leftovers. I still buy for a family of four when feeding one which must mean my single meals are large.
