Trader Joe's YAY/MEH/NAY - July 2014

YAY - Goat Gouda. I dislike most goat cheeses so I was hesitant to try this cheese but the only other goat cheese I like is a goat gouda so I thought I'd give it a whirl and it's delicious, highly recommend.

Bulging sealed pico de gallo

In fact I didn't but thank you. It was a general question if anyone had seen this before and if it was ok. If they all bulge then hmm, perhaps that would have been normal.

"Cooking Block" What Do You Do?

I've been in a block for months. I'm totally pleating the same meal at least 5 times a week until I "recover."

Yea, it's not wax, it's edible. It's like the black pepper Toscano, I wish the flavor was all throughout but the cheese itself is still great.

Bulging sealed pico de gallo

It's before the stamped expiration date, so shouldn't they be accounting for that. It was last Thursday, not even a week. So if it's fermenting before their own expiration date, sounds like an issue to me.

Thanks! The empty tub is already in the grocery bag ready to be returned this week.

I'm thinking it's fermentation. I did taste a small drop and it's very acidic so unfortunately while it probably won't kill me it likely doesn't taste very good.

What's for Low-Carb Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner? #4

It was one of the plastic tubs which now that you mention it have become thinner, but also had a plastic seal over the tub with a similarly thin plastic lid. I definitely remember the plastic film being flat when I bought it last week and depressed somewhat as they usually are but this morning it was taut and bulging and there were bubbles at the surface of the salsa. I used a knife to slightly open it and there was definitely a "whoosh" of air.

Yea, bulging salsa...I'm pretty lax with these types of things but it was not bulging last week when I bought it.

Blargh I was going to make a Shirataki dish with pico de gallo, ground turkey and cheese but the pico de gallo container is bulging and seems like a risk I'm not willing to take which is saying a lot for me. Instead, I'm thinking a ground turkey stroganoff.

What's for Dinner #313 - There's a Summer Place Edition! [through July 21, 2014]

The plan was a ground turkey Tex-mex inspired casserole with pico de gallo and all the other usual taco fixins' but I removed the lid to the pico de gallo I bought at TJs last week and the plastic seal is bulging and it just seems like a bad idea even for a person pretty lax with food safety recommendations. Plan B - ground turkey stroganoff with Labne.

This was my thought was that it has been fermenting. It smelled slightly sour, nothing too strong but I imagine doesn't taste very good. Thanks.

There were accompanying bubbles in the salsa so perhaps but could be any gas causing bubbles.

Bulging sealed pico de gallo

I bought a plastic tub of pico de gallo last week at TJs which has a plastic seal beneath a plastic lid. I just removed the plastic lid and the seal is bulging and taut. I don't buy many products like this so not sure what to think but seems odd. Anyone else noticed this with sealed products? Bulging products just make me think of bacterial contamination but thought I'd ask.

YAY-Cave aged blue cheese. I just needed a simple blue cheese for a buffalo style spicy dish and this worked great. Good flavor and crumbles well.

Do you eat rabbit? How do you cook it?

Unfortunately I don't live in NYC so those options are not available to me and I know of no live poultry shops where I live.

WFD is my favorite Frank's bowl - ground bison sauteed with mushrooms, onions, garlic, then doused with Frank's hot sauce and finished with a looottt of blue cheese. I might toss in Shirataki for some more volume. Cheese and salami platter for dessert.

What's for Dinner #313 - There's a Summer Place Edition! [through July 21, 2014]

WFD is an old favorite I haven't had in a while but I'm craving something spicy and non-fancy so my classic "Frank's bowl" is on the menu. Ground bison sauteed with mushrooms, onions, and garlic doused with Frank's hot sauce and finished with a hefty two handfuls of blue cheese. It's the last day of vacation so go big or go home - I went a little crazy at the cheese shop and Italian deli and have a fridge full of cheese of salami which will be both appetizer and dessert. The full spread will also include sliced smoked duck breast, liver pate and marcona almonds (and to be honest, a bedtime snack of a spoon and a jar of nut butter TBD).
