What's the deal with Ledo's pizza?

Not a fan. It kind of reminds me of St Louis style pizza (which we called "crackers and cheese"), minus the provel cheese. One thing I will say for it is that it's cheap and if you're just in the mood for some cheese, carbs, and beer, you'll be satisfied.

Hong Kong Palace Menu -- Pick Your Faves.....

Thanks to all the 70+ commenters about the restaurant for tuning me in to Hong Kong Palace. Last night, my husband was craving some meat he could gnaw off the bone so we decided to search for a good chinese duck place and this came up. Lucky for us, it's only 2 miles away from our home.

We ordered the chengdu noodles and tiger skin peppers (for me, the spicy loving vegetarian) and the tea smoked duck for him. We loved everything. The sauces were clearly made from scratch and were incredibly flavorful.

We loved the waitstaff; they were very helpful and friendly. Just about all the waiters who saw we got the peppers told us they'd be even better the next day. Indeed they are. Wow! Best Chinese leftovers ever.

RESTAURANT WHERE SENIOR CITIZENS WILL FEEL COMFORTABLE

If you ever come into downtown DC, my votes go to Tosca and Corduroy. Both are quiet (excellent for those who have trouble hearing in noisy places), spacious, and have comfortable seating, valet parking, elevators, etc. And the food was good last time I ate at each place, though it was over a year ago.

DYI reduced fat peanut butter...my latest harebrained scheme

A spoon in the jar sounds dangerous! Personally, I'd end up eating more PB that way ;)

Light Brown vs. Dark Brown Sugar-

dolores, what was the difference, specifically? Was it flavor, texture, moistness?

Light Brown vs. Dark Brown Sugar-

Good question. On that note, does anyone know the difference between regular and granulated brown sugar other than moisture content? I was out of the regular stuff once and substituted the other; I noticed that my cookies came out a little dryer than usual.

Thanks! Are all fruits and nuts kosher or do I need to make sure?

What are the most overrated DC restaurants?

Second that on Central. I think this meets the definition of being overrated, in that it just got this year's James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. What?
When I was there, I will grant you the green salad was one of the best I've ever had, but the gougeres were dry and not fresh, my companion's lobster hamburger totally bland, my own dish absolutely forgettable (literally-- I don't remember what I had), the service inattentive, and it was so loud that even when you yell you can hardly hear the person across the table. I just don't understand the hype.

high holiday hostess gift

Shana tova!

I'm attending my first orthodox service and luncheon tomorrow (I was raised in the tradition of the lapsed reform Jew), and want to make sure I don't make any faux pas in my gift to the hostess. I'm thinking I need to steer away from bringing something I made, like baked goods, as my kitchen is not kosher. I'm told a good honey would make a nice Rosh Hashana gift, but don't know if all honey is kosher. Or should I stay away from food and just go with flowers?

Vegan or Vegetarian in DC?

Oh, one more thing in the Falls Church area is Happy Family on S Washington St in Falls Church city. It doesn't look like much-- just a crappy looking little Chinese takeout, but they have a really good selection of well made meat substitute dishes.

Vegan or Vegetarian in DC?

I really like the FC Sunflower as well. I'm not used to having so many options to pick from!

Saran Indian Cuisine on Lee Highway in Arlington is very nice (though the last time I went was at least a year or two ago) and cheap, too.

What are the most overrated DC restaurants?

Totally agree with you about 1789, Doh. The space there is so strange, and the food entirely forgettable. We did have good service last time we went, on the positive side.
