Who has good breakfast grits?

Several places have grits, but does any place in these parts have red-eye or thin meat gravy to go wit the grits? Grits are just not worth ordering without the proper gravy to go with them, and I have not found any place around here that has anything to contribute.

El Patio is 60

I guess you really do have to like Austin history and "the way things used to be". I LOVE El Patio and since you brought it up I can't wait to go again.

Round Rock Report

I must have been there on a bad day. The Godfather sandwich was good but extremely stingy on meat, and the chips (although fresh) were just plain awful. Maybe I should give them another try.

Fresh polish sausage

I once had a Polish co-worker who asked me, after going to a supermarket, "What is 'Polish Sausage'"? He was genuinely befuddled. There are so many varieties in his country that the single term 'Polish sausage' was meaningless to him.

New job in Round Rock - What's Good?

Yes I always used to like Zorba's. The last time I went they had changed to "order at the front" instead of wait staff (I don't know when they changed, may havbe been long ago).

I will have to try taquerias arandinas.

Hatch is back

I tried the Hatch Sausages from HEB and they were great. Four (4) links for $3.97 if I remember correctly.

New job in Round Rock - What's Good?

Ate there today and had the Godfather (NY strip). The sandwich was good (although it could have used more meat) but the chips were the blandest I have ever tasted (no salt at all). They were only marginally better when I doused them with salt. Also a sign on the door said that the A/C was out, but fans were keeping it acceptably cool.

A little on the expensive side and hard to get to with the construction in front, but I will be back to try some of the other choices.

Where is Pacific Star? I went to the SE corner of I35 and Palm Valley (79) but could not find it. Their website says that it is behind the DQ. Is it still there? The only things in that area that I found were Baskin Robins, ShortStop, Long John's, and a Mexican place that looked closed (no cars).

New job in Round Rock - What's Good?

Tried to go there today but couldn't find it, probably because I didn't go far enough north. There was road construction about where I think it should be so I just went on.

New job in Round Rock - What's Good?

I tried Johnny T's today with a coworker. The brisket was very good, tender and moist, but a little bland (needed bbq sauce to spice it up), and the cole slaw was good, but the beans were out of a can. The sausage was just OK, nothing special (it is not theirs however so that is not a fair comparison). My friend said his pulled pork sandwich was the best he has had. Overall I would give it another try, but I prefer meat that doesn't need bbq sauce (just my preference).

Thanks I did not know Brooklyn Pie head a store there. They are my favorite in Austin. I've been to Fire Bowl and like it.

Thanks for the rep lie. I have eaten at Chola's and thought it was OK but nothing spectacular; I have had far better Indian buffets elsewhere but they are now too far from where I work. I will have to give the others a try.

New job in Round Rock - What's Good?

I just started a new job in RR and don't know the area very well. I know there are several restaurants (mostly fast food) in the WalMart and Lowes shopping centers, and I went with a friend to Longhorn Cafe recently (OK but not great for the price). On the north end there are Cracker Barrel, Chuy's, Saltgrass, etc.

I eat out most every day so I need a variety of suggestions, cheap or midrange mostly. I like mostly any kind of food.

Best place for King crab legs and other seafood options

You should. I just LOVE their salt & pepper shrimp. Matter of fact, that made up my mind for lunch!

R.I.P. VI

That is just about the last of the old timers in Austin. I fondly remember the Miramont and wish it were still here, but times change. It was a great after-church meeting place with good sunday fried chicken like I remember from growing up.

Casita Jorge's New Owners to Close For Remodel

You may not have liked it but there were many others that did. If my arteries could stand it I could eat their grilled tacos every day for the rest of my life. I did not like many of their other dishes either but their grilled tacos were unique (or almost so) in Austin and reminded me of my childhood in west Texas. Just because you don't personally like something is no reason to run it down.

Bad news, another longtime Austin institution gone forever. I don't hold out much hope for the replacement either.

That's too bad, I hadn't heard that. I'll have to eat there a lot before they close!

Suggestions for Lunch/Dinner next week in Baltimore

Sorry for not posting about my week earlier. As it turned out we ate at home a lot (my son is a good cook) but I did go to a few places. The first night (Saturday) we all (me, my son, and his 3 housemates) went out to Paper Moon (227 West 29th) and had a fun time. It sort of reminds me of Chuy's in Austin (where I live) because of all the strange decorations hanging from the ceiling and on every square inch of wall space. I went for a walk on Monday and found a small local Japanese/Korean restaurant called Nam King (2126 Maryland Ave) for a late afternoon lunch that was really good. I took my son to work on Tuesday, had a soft-shell crab sandwich for lunch at Phillip's (I know, touristy) that was pretty good, and then toured the Inner Harbor alone. Then on Wednesday I found the prize catch of all! My son was at work so I went off by myself in search of something different. I headed NE and happened on a very small seafood and catering place called Jerry D' Seafood (7804 Hartford) where I had the biggest and by far the best lump meat crab cake that I had ever had, and for under $10! I, my son, and one of his housemates that had just moved to Baltimore took the train to DC on Friday, toured the Library of Congress and the Air & Space Museum , then had dinner at a small Middle Eastern place a few blocks from there that I can't recall the name of. That wound up the week and I flew back to Austin on Saturday. All in all a great week that I will remember fondly for a very long time.

We did have a local recommendation for Mo's Crab House downtown but we never made it (and it was quite pricey from what I could find out).

Those sound great esp the Ethiopian. I can get great tacos at home in Austin Tx so probably won't do that here. Any good places for crab not too expensive?

Suggestions for Lunch/Dinner next week in Baltimore

Thanks for the suggestions. No I would rather eat local than a big chain, plus I was not impressed the one time I went to Ruth's Chris. I am staying with my son (e lanville area) so anywhere nearby would be great but I do have a car also. We went to Paper Moon last night and liked it (my son and his roomies love it). We will be in DC Friday w/o a car so someplace central govt area would be good. Not looking for expensive this trip.

La Palapa ?

Man that brings back memories! I haven't been there in quite a few years, but it used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants back in the 80's. I will have to give them another try!

Everybody loves ________, but me

I agree with you. The only thing that I have tried that really turns me on is the Brushfire but I swear it is the best taco I have ever had anywhere! It is just absolutely addicting. I usually also get a milder one to help put out the fire though.
