La Fogata on Burnet
Actually it is better for me. There was nowhere to park at the carwash without taking up space for the carwash customers. If I had know that he was charging her $1000 I would not have felt bad about taking up a space, but the new location is better for parking IMHO.
Hard Hat Vol IX
Although I never liked either one, I actually thought Terra Burger was somewhat better. I won't be going to the new or the old location.
Crispy Tacos?
Of course different people have different tastes and you may not like what I like, but I loved the ones that I had for lunch. And yes I would describe what I had at Amaya's as more of a puffy taco, which I have never liked.
Crispy Tacos?
Admittedly I haven't been to Amaya's in many years (have not been to the new location) but the last time I went was for their crispy tacos based on reviews here that gushed about their fresh corn tortillas. Maybe they were just having a bad day but the tacos were simply awful and I have not been back. The tortillas and the meat were both very underdone (mushy wet tortillas? really? and they were supposed to be crisp). I know I shouldn't judge based on one bad experience so I will try them again, hopefully this week.
In my experience most anybody can do at least passable soft tacos, but doing crispy tacos right is very hard (or at least it would seem so from the fact that very few do it right). However crispy tacos is one of the (few) things that Chuy's does right. I just had some of the best crispy tacos ever from there for lunch.
Crispy Tacos?
What restaurants have crispy tacos that are made with folded tortillas (as opposed to pre-made taco shells)? I know of a few places (Chuy's, Jorge's) but I am sure there are more. I am always afraid to order crispy tacos at new restaurants because they usually use the pre-made extra-crunchy taco shells that break apart after the first bite. Anybody have any suggestions?
Line at Franklin BBQ
Oh that is sad that it is for sale. My parents retired to LaGrange and I remember the place fondly. It always just smelled SO good!
Chile Rellenos in Austin
Have you tried the Texican by Lakeline? A coworker and I ate there for lunch and we both had the rellenos (once cheese one beef). I think they are at least similar to what you are looking for.
Best Thing YOU Ever Ate, Austin
I heartily second the salt and pepper shrimp at T&S! They are addicting...
"Tiger" or "Rock" Shrimp in Austin???
You keep saying Tiger shrimp when I think you really mean rock shrimp. There have been numerous articles lately on the fact that black cannibal tiger shrimp are invading the gulf and killing off the local shrimp. So in a few years if you really want Tiger shrimp that may be all you will be able to find around here. And I suspect that your beloved rock shrimp would taste just as disgusting to a Texan raised on gulf shrimp if that was all that was available, so it goes both ways.
Newbie here - looking for the best cheesecake in Austin?
So where is the best place for cheesecake now that Manny Hattans's is gone? My wife also loves cheesecake and I would love to get her one for her birthday.
EDIT: Last year I got her an Italian Mascarpone from Randall's and she absolutely loved it!
Greek restaurant that bakes their own pita bread?
Is there a Greek restaurant in Austin that bakes their own pita bread? Most of the places with which I am familiar only warm up the bread from somewhere else. My wife and I want to go out for lunch tomorrow, and she was asking this, since she knew several pleas in Houston that bake their own bread.
La Fogata on Burnet
The trailer is now in front of a rental place next to Jiffy Lube just south of 183. I will have to give those enchiladas a try.
How do I cook really tender green beans?
Thanks, I never heard of that. I will have to try it next time.
two foodie girls eating their way through austin...
Amen! I can't understand the hatred for Chuy's on this board. Granted they are not my first choice for most items (although I think they make the best crispy beef tacos in town) but they are a solid choice IMHO.
suggestions please! : job interview/ lunch
I assume they need to talk so I would definitely not recommend Cover 3, the loudest restaurant I have ever been to. Maybe its different at lunch.

The brushfire with diablo sauce has got to be my favorite taco of its kind ever!
two foodie girls eating their way through austin...
They are called Tacos Garcia (grilled tacos). I have had some that were not so good but usually they are heavenly. Now I know where I will be going for lunch!

Yep, that's the only thing I will eat at Jack in the Box, but I love fried tacos so I get them once in a while. Fried tacos are just not available many places here in Austin (the only other one that I know is at Jorges, which is of course far superior).

Funny how different people on this board can have such different opinions of a place. A friend and I ate at Stiles Switch a short while back and we both hated it. Absolutely nothing exceptional, and some barely edible. I would certainly not recommend this place.
Looking for a "Meat and Three" around the Austin area.
Man that brings back memories! I haven't been in several years but I used to love that place.
EDIT: sorry, I just notice the New Braunfels part. I was thinking of the Schobels in Columbus.
Where is the best Spicy Fried Chicken in Austin on par with Prince's in Nashville
I've had the same experience at the Randall's at Braker and 183. Again nothing fancy, and the sides are nothing special, but the fried chicken is some of the best I have had in Austin. I will have to give Luby's a try.
"Supper" Barbecue?
I think you will like the pork ribs at TRK, as I am not the only one on this board that seems to like them a lot. That is the only thing that I get there, so I can't really comment on anything else.
"Supper" Barbecue?
You're right of course about the places that charge by the pound or half pound, but I am more used to the places that have combo plates and/or "specials" like the Young-n-Old at TRK. I can usually get all I need at TRK for $5.49 plus tax, so over $13 today for half as much food (and not nearly as good to boot) seemed a little excessive.
"Supper" Barbecue?
Update: I just ate lunch at Stiles Switch with a coworker. Unfortunately neither of us was impressed, especially for the price (major sticker shock). At least the service was friendly. I had the beef rib, original sausage, and beans. The beef rib was mostly all fat (and over $7 all by itself!); now I remember why I never order beef ribs. The sausage was very good, but overpriced. The beans were canned (or so they seemed). My friend had the pork ribs, brisket, and turkey; he stated that my sausage was much better than any of his. He also said that texas Rib Kings is far better for everything that he had.
Too bad, I was excited about trying a new bbq place, but I don't think we will be going back there.
"Supper" Barbecue?
I'm surprised to hear that about Rudy's because everything I have ever had there has been bland, bland, bland. Granted I have not had the baby backs though. I will have to give Stiles Switch a try, but for pork ribs I don't think you can do better anywhere than Texas Rib Kings.
Raw Oysters
Another vote for Pacific Star, although Capt. Benny's is pretty decent it is a step below IMHO. I might just have to go off my diet today and go get some oysters (fried, not raw).
Hana World Market
I don't know what you are talking about there. Han Yang is the large Korean market at Lamar and Justin. They redid the restaurant that is attached to have an outside door now, but otherwise it looks the same to me.
Hana World Market
I have yet to make it to see the new supermarket, but my wife (who is Korean) has been. She doesn't hold out much hope for it unfortunately because the Korean population in Austin simply is not big enough to support such a large supermarket, esp. when they have a well known and trusted one already (Han Yang). I told her there were supposed to be both meat and seafood counters and butchers at the store and she said that in her opinion there is no way that they can support that. She has seen very few shoppers when she has been. Perhaps when the food court opens (if it ever does?) the prospects will look better.
