"Vintage" 2008 Olive oil served in 2012--question for the Italian "experts" (??) [moved from Italy]
to echo what others have said here, if this is an accurate story, it is a cheap marketing ploy and, like so many things at the Eataly complex, plays on the ignorance of consumers about Italian gastronomic culture. even if kept in a dark place and in ideal humidity/temp conditions, the olive oil will deteriorate through oxidation, its acidity levels will decline, its color will darken, and its aromas will dull. eventually it will become rancid. even the finest olive oils I have encountered here in Italy are to be consumed within 12-18 months, ideally within the first 6.

Kicking off my honeymoon in Rome
i agree the explanation is very weak. a more likely explanation is that their illegal practice was an attempt to squeeze money out of tourists who they thought wouldn't notice. and the clients i sent there who reported the insane service charge being added to their bill didn't order 5 salads and water...

I can report that Corsi is gross. They serve awful food made with awful ingredients but in a casual somewhat charming setting, which are its only attractive points.

Carbonara
will have to go look again but it's late (almost 2am in rome) but it could very well exclude black pepper, which would have been a very expensive luxury in the post-war era when the recipe was born.

Rome - Restaurant for Special Dinner?
YES!! do try it indeed. let me know if you need a chaperone:) the menu changes quite frequently, but you will likely find one or both of these excellent pasta dishes: mezzelune all'amatriciana (the pasta is filled with amatriciana sauce and then topped with crispy guanciale) and ravioli filled with a cream of 60 month aged parmigiano reggiano. they are dressed in butter and served with asparagus in spring, or some other seasonal accompaniment. the "tagliatelle" di seppie are very interesting, they are strips of cuttle fish that are tossed with guanciale and sea urchin roe. the spaghetti in acqua di peperone with cetara anchovies are outstanding. the scallops with pistacchio cream are wonderful, venison is fantastic. i just saw the new quinto quarto items and am dying to try the tongue pastrami. enjoy it!
Rome - Restaurant for Special Dinner?
I would second the suggestion of Glass, which is rooted in Italian cuisine and is perhaps modern by Rome standards, but not by those of cosmopolitan eaters. Pipero al Rex is excellent and for fish you cannot beat Il Sanlorenzo, though if you go all out there, you may very well exceed that $200 per person limit. The only thing that is really special about Pierluigi is its cocktail bar, which is tended by a very knowledgable and creative bartender. Too bad the bar has a screen showing an obnoxious slide show of its celebrity guests (I assume to distract from how average the food is).

Gnocchi in Rome OTHER THAN Thursday?
start with suppli'!!! the fried rice balls there are insanely good. and you can both definitely be happy getting 2 orders of gnocchi, but if you wanna switch it up, get 1 order of gnocchi and one cacio e unto (aka gricia). enjoy!

Rome, Montalcino, Florence restaurants
definitely ditch Taverna dei Fori, which has seen a tremendous decline in food quality over the past few years. I used to be a regular, as it was down the street from my apt, but it no longer lives up to the reputation or prices. you could certainly sub in L'Asino d'Oro, which is nearby. but don't skip Trattoria MOnti for L'asino...
Definitely Cavour 313 over Urbana 47. La Barrique (a winebar also in Monti) is fantastic. Another alternative is Enoteca Provincia Romana, which recently started serving proper meals in addition to their excellent cold plates.
As Elizabeth says, Roscioli isnt really near the forum, but is ~20 min walk away and worth the trip for some cured meats, cheese, and pasta. pipero is great. enjoy!

Menus in English? Is there an app for that?
a menu glossary is actually a whole new app in itself and, while i would love to have a million and one resources in Rome for Foodies, there are a number of obstacles (mainly financial) to being everything to everyone. Hopefully the amazing and fantastical Word Lens app will come out with an English/Italian version soon. Until then, you can count on the vast majority of restaurant in Rome, Florence and Venice having menus with english translations (of varying quality).

Rome on Easter Sunday
Checchino is amazing for pajata, trippa, coda alla vaccinara. If you are into offal, do make a trip!
Rome on Easter Sunday
Pizzarium is usually open on holidays. Gracchi isnt a short walk from pizzarium. it's more like 25 min. but 10 min away you can get amazing gelato at Fatamorgana on via Bettolo (way better than gracchi IMO) not sure if checchino is open easter sunday but here's the round-up i posted on my blog last year. there is also an easter itinerary on my app that will be updated, along with the post below, shortly. hope it helps:
"Antico Arco: creative cuisine which draws inspiration from the ingredients and recipes of southern Italy. Expensive, but not excessively so. Open for dinner only both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Call +39065815274 for reservations.
Cul de Sac: This long established wine bar near Piazza Navona has more than 1,500 (mostly Italian) labels and a nice selection of cheeses, pates, and salamis. It has outdoor seating, a huge improvement on the uncomfortable benches inside. Open both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday for lunch and dinner. Call +39066 8801094 for bookings (I think they only take reservations for 1230pm and 630pm).
Da Danilo: Roman food with a hint of modernity. Da Danilo is home to one of my favorite carbonaras in the city. Be sure to specify a table upstairs. Open on Easter Sunday at lunch. Call +390677200111 for bookings.
Flavio Velvevodetto: moderately priced Roman cuisine with outdoor seating. Open both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday for lunch. Call +39065744194 for bookings.
La Campana: Classic Roman cuisine in a familial setting. Open Easter Sunday at lunch and dinner. Call +39066875273 to book.
L’Asino d’Oro: Chef Lucio Sforza serves “Umbrian soul food” at moderate prices in Monti. Outdoor seating available. Open Easter Sunday for both lunch and dinner and Easter Monday at lunch only. Call +390648913832 for reservations.
UPDATE Antico Arco will also be open for lunch. Mesob will be open both Sunday and Monday night."

Rome restaurants - best places for 2 people to eat for about 100 euros
that's the same settimio. the mont blanc is one of my favorite things on earth. it is so sickeningly sweet and i cannot get enough of it and those sugary meringue chunks. i would be happy for it to be a part of my last meal.
i actually find the gnocchi there to be above average (most places in rome have truly disgusting gummy gnocchi made with dehydrated potato flakes, settimio's are a step above). but the greatest gnocchi are at l'arcangelo (whcih i should have put on the list above along with suppli). the food at settimio is simple and many of their dishes are good or great. i love the grilled meatballs and involtini, which remind me of my grandmother's. but the place is a simple trattoria and i never walk out of there paying less than €45-50 so maybe the lack of value is what leaves me a bit cold. so when i said not interesting i meant not totally worth the price tag. i should have elaborated. but as far as cucina casalinga in the center of rome, it's head and shoulders above the competition.

Rome restaurants - best places for 2 people to eat for about 100 euros
Well, of the places on that list, Trattoria Monti is great, though it is not traditional Roman. The family that runs it is from Le Marche. Taverna dei Fori Imperiali is extremely overrated and expensive for the food quality. The owners are very nice people but especially since moving to a new location, the food has taken a nosedive. This decline has been documented by a number of English language food bloggers. No italian blogs that I know of even rate that place. The other venues don't really represent the best of Rome. If I had five days in Rome and was willing to travel, I would check out
Tuna or Il Sanlorenzo for seafood (very expensive but far superior to anything else in the center). La Gensola could be a moderately priced substitute
Sforno or La Gatta Mangiona for thick-rimmed pizza and fried things
Pizzarium for Pizza by the slice
Palatium and Enoteca Provincia for wine bar/restaurant dishes made with very local ingredients
Settimio for very simple Roman dishes in an old school atmosphere (which is more interesting than the food, actually)
Checchino dal 1887 for the very traditional rigatoni con la pajata, trippa alla romana, and coda alla vaccinara
Roscioli for a modern carbonara and cacio e pepe
Armando al Pantheon for gricia
The pizza rossa at Forno Campo dei Fiori is great; bianca not as good as Forno Roscioli. Is il cartoccio the one on corso vittorio?

Rome - need options for panini lunch on Sunday near Coloseum or Capitoline Museums
The Capitoline Museums cafe (entrance from Palazzo dei Conservatori or piazza Caffarelli 4) serves panini, as barberinibee says. In Monti you could also head to La Bottega del Caffe in Piazza Madonna dei Monti. Antico Forno dei Serpenti on via dei Serpenti also serves panini which are decent (but avoid the pizza by the slice and just about everything else there). There is a calabrian alimentari also on via dei serpenti that makes cheap takeaway sandwich to order.

Trastevere restaurants
I wouldn't exactly say Campo and the Ghetto have lots of wonderful places. on the contrary. Piperno is passable for some dishes (artichokes and generally fried things among them). ditirambo is quite disappointing.
alternatives: Roscioli has good cacio e pepe. Taverna Trilussa has a good vegetarian antipasto thing going on, but is a bit pricey overall (rosicoli is actually cheaper when you get down to it). there are good melted cheese dishes at Lucifero on via del pellegrino. there is cheese fondue at the sister restaurant on via dei cappellari. want more cheese? how bout beppe e i suoi formaggi? in the ghetto ba'ghetto milky (dairy kosher) is decent, but pricey. the ravioli with liquefied 60-month aged parmigiano at glass are outstanding. youll find simple salads at wine bars (il bacocco in trastevere is cute).
the best vegetarian dish in rome is the mixed vegetarian plate at mesob (rome's best ethiopian resturant) in pigneto.

Question: Anniversary dinner in Rome - which restaurant?
Hooray! I hope you enjoy Pipero! And thanks very much for buying my app! hope you enjoy it too:)
Question: Anniversary dinner in Rome - which restaurant?
Da Michele and La Notizia--quite a contrast! They might both be pizzerias but what comes out on the plate is so different! looking forward to your write up!
Can you help me narrow the following list of 11 restaurants down to 8?
i'd ditch la pergola altogether and sub in pipero al rex. metamorfosi is great. il pagliaccio is amazing but not everyone's cup of tea and as tavole romane says you can do without. la renella is forgettable but forno roscioli is not and is a great place to stop for a quick lunch. bear in mind it is packed from 1-2 but before and after the lunch rush it's much easier to find stools at the back to sit on. im with maureen on Perilli, Costanza, Gino, moro and Fori Imperiali. felice was awful on a trip last summer and i dont get the hype. id throw in tuna or il san lorenzo for fish (based on some of the places listed above i take it you are not on a strict budget; these places are expensive so expect to spend ~ €70-100 per person). i would throw in roscioli for burrata, carbonara and cacio e pepe and l'arcangelo for suppli' and gnocchi (thursdays only). don't forget gelato. neve di latte, il gelato di claudio torce', fatamorgana, and gori are rome's best IMO

Rome restaurants
Near the Vatican Sorpasso and Passaguai are great. Nice wine lists, homemade salumi, good atmosphere and always open.
i can't be the only one that thinks Taverna dei Fori Imperiali is insanely expensive and way past its prime...
Near Monti, Enoteca Provincia Romana is great and I love a quick lunch at La Barrique in Monti.
