Peking duck in the south bay

It's been a couple of years since the last visit. Sea Empress in Gardena used to serve Peking duck with this crepes. Not great but perfectly serviceable.

Fresh Soba Noodles in OC- Tanakaya

Tried twice in the past two weeks. Their soba is the best in oc IMHO.
Is it as good as the one served at Otafuku in Gardena? Probably not. But you don't have to drive an hour or more.
They also have a excellent Filet Katsu Don.

SGV runaround

I recall reading your downhill alert regarding Dean Sin World. Do you still recommend their XLB? Especially the frozen ones.

best 100 yards of food in LA

If you park your car (or bike) in the middle of the SOCO (south coast collection) parking lot, you have Taco Maria, Shuck and Portola Coffee Lab in 100 yards radius.
Also you have Arc, Iron Press, Greenleaf, Waiiha sushi and Surfas as added bonus.

Shunji still rules w/o the cooked dishes?

Thanks to your (hounders) reassurance, we had a great dinner at Shunji last Saturday.
The omakase experience was close to perfection. Cooked dishes were innovative and fun, while nigiri course being traditional and bursting with flavor of ocean. Will return definitely as long as my check book allows.

Shunji still rules w/o the cooked dishes?

I will order full omakase for myself. I enjoy cooked dishes at Mori and other places.
It is my wife and son, who prefer nigiri,
However I see it, its a win win for me. ;-)

Shunji still rules w/o the cooked dishes?

I am treating my son and my wife to sushi this weekend. We are fans of Mori sushi's zen like Edomae sushi. Having read overwhelming praises, Shunji gets my nod for this weekend. However a lot of photos of cooked dishes (specially crappy ones ;-)...) worries my wife, who prefers more nigiri than cooked items.
Does Shunji's nigiri compare well against those from Mori?
Can we order sushi only omakase at counter?
TIA

Dinner with non-Foodie elderly parents

How about Scarpetta at Cosmopolitan?
"Modern" Italian without really being modern; no foams or dry ice detected, SPAGHETTI tomato & basil; maybe an extreme example but basically pretty simple appearing menu, just a couple of foie and truffle (optional) dishes, have pretty good steaks also with excellent service.
My rib eye was under-seasoned (with barely traceable amount of salt) and arrived lukewarm. After a few bites the manger (I assume) replaced it with new york cooked perfectly medium rare.
NUTELLA & VANILLA BOMBOLONI nutella ganache, banana gelato & chocolate shortbread was a nice finish for a very pleasant meal.

Raku ... OMG, please help, what is Oyaji Tofu?

I, with a help from my BH, tried all three of them last week.
Oyaji is a half portion of the Raku with special hot(spicy, cold) sauce on the side. To me, a Korean, the hot sauce was just mildly spicy with some kind of smoked flavor (bonito maybe).
I enjoyed Raku, Oyaji, Agedashi in the order of preference.
If you want to try the Oyaji, I would suggest trying Raku first, or at least try the original and wonderful tofu before you add the special hot sauce.
Their original house made tofu reminds me of a very light but great ricotta cheese. Very unique.
Have a great evening. You wont be disappointed.

Reasonably priced anniversary dinner in Santa Barbara

I agree with you 99%. But their entrees, although small, are priced from $18 to $27 to my surprise.
Also OP did not specify the budget. I hope Op can enjoy my favorite restauant in SB so far.
It is so good to miss imho.

Lotus or Chada

I totally agree with Dave's opinion on Chada. The food was so good with quality ingredients we had two meals at Chada in three day trip last week. Along with Julienne in Santa Barbara, Chada provided one of the best meals I've had in 2012.
As Dave explained, you cannot lose at either Chada or LOS. If there will be just two of you I will point you to Chada. You can try more dishes since Chada have smaller portions hence lower price for each dish. If you will have bigger party, it's hard to beat LOS's various and well prepared dishes.
