Highlands Tour
I don't remember the name of butcher shop. It was about a block west of Mellis on South Street. I didn't check out The Guid Cheese Shop but love Mellis. The meats at the Balgove are also excellent. We had scallops and herring at Kerarchers. Anyone visiting St Andrews that likes to cook should consider a self catering cottage or apartment.
Highlands Tour
Thanks for the advise. I just returned home yesterday, but will file the recommendations for future trips. Yes, the daughter's at St Andrews. It is far from home, but a good excuse to visit Scotland and a good oportunity for her to experience a perspective on the world beyond that of the States. We had previously toured and enjoyed East Neuk.
A dining summary. Solo, I had an excellent vegetarian mezze platter at Hendersons in Edinburgh; and I'm a carnavoir. The family arrived in Pitlochory tired and hungry. Went indian, can't remember the name. Above average by home standards, maybe not by local standards. I can highly recommend the Dunmurray Lodge, best breakfast and most helpful host of the trip. We had an excellent lunch at the Applecross Inn. The prawns were excellent and unlike any I have had before. In Fort William we ate at the Crannog. The steamed shellfish in crab bisque and the halibut were excellent, the ribeye so so. It is a seafood restaurant after all. Back in St Andrews we treated the daughter and her friends to home cooking. The local butcher, seafood and cheese shops really stand out.
I am looking forward to our future visits. Oh, please excuse my spelling, kind of a problem.
All Green Market in Glen Burnie
Don't know about the Glen Burnie store, but the Parkville and 40th St stores in Baltimore were on a very low level and are now closed. No organic selection, fair at best produce and meat otherwise and limited sad looking prepared foods. They advertised themselves as high end with competitive prices. I'd say they were somewhere lower end than Shoppers with Shoppers having some organic and decent prepared foods.
Highlands Tour
We are from the USA and will be visting our daughter in St Andrews than touring the Highlands in early April, spending nights in Pitlochry, Inverness, Broadford (Skye) and Fort William. Looking for mostly lower to midrange restaurants and cafes. We also have liked some of the farm shops we visited in Fife like the Balgove in St Andrewsand the Pillars of Hercules in Falkland. Suggestions for dining and local specialties would be most appreciated. Thanks.
Harris Teeter in Locust Point
Nice selection of meat and veg. Hot and fresh prepared foods were lacking and lackluster.
Kitchen Nightmares/HON Episode [split from Home Cooking]
I have not been to Hon for quite a while, but never thought the food was that bad. Not creative, but well prepared for what it was. Did they go downhill after the trademark fiasco? Was the bad food and busy night disaster staged for Ramsay?
Oh well. That's entertainment.
Dim Sum in Baltimore - Does it exist?
Tried Zhongshan when they first opened. Quite dissapointed. Dim Sum taro was reheated and still cold in the center. I thought I would give them some time to get thier act togther but never returned. Does anybody have recent experience?
Delicious organic bread made in baltimore and the surrounding area?
Both the Hamilton Bakery and Atwaters produce excellent breads.
Low-sodium substitute for onion soup mix
I would try a reduced onion stock made with caramalized onions.
Where to all the Chesapeake crabs go?
Acutally, the winter population estimates correlate well with actual harvests. I always suspected that waterman claims that rockfish were eating the crabs was a ploy to raise quotas for rockfish harvesting. That said, it is true that to proper manage a fishery one must consider predator prey relationships.
Maryland Style Fried Chicken???
A chickenmaryland website. Too funny. I grew up on "cornflake chicken" similar to one of the recipes. Still a favorite.
Maryland Style Fried Chicken???
There is a Chinese restaurant in St. Andrews, Scotland that lists Maryland Fried Chicken among their non Chinese options. I didn't get a chance to sample it.
32nd Street Farmers Market
The selection was decent yesterday, but I cannot vouch for where the produce was grown. I purchased very nice broccoli and cabbage,
Foie Gras in Baltimore
Thanks. Just found out you can buy retail at Fells Point Wholesale meats on Monroe Street.
Foie Gras in Baltimore
Hi. Does anyone have a suggestion where one might purchase raw foie gras in the Baltimore area as a New Year's Treat?
Gordon Ramsay to makeover Cafe Hon in Hampden next week
i agree with the decent diner food comment.
NW Baltimore Crabs
Thanks Doc. Ended up at CJ's based on a friends rec. Crabs were nice sized and heavy at $56 per dozen. They were busy for a Tuesday night. I liked the crabhouse feel to it.
NW Baltimore Crabs
Taking the parents out for crabs this week. They live in Ownings Mills and Bill's would be too far. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience they can relate with CJ's, Captain Harvey's, Reiters or the Pike Diner.

JFX Farmer's Market 2011!
As we stray off topic, Whole foods haas chickens for under $2.00 per pound. I choose chickens raised without antibiotic not because they taste better but I cannot accept the impact to the environment that all these antibiotics will likely cause,
Restaurants & Bars Featured in HBO's The Wire
In season 1 (I think) D's mother brought him a fishcake from Sterlings.
Meet 27 - Baltimore
Visited again this week. Everything was excellent. The empanadas really stood out. I think they were made with corn meal and spinach with a mango relish and spiced in an indian style. For entrees we had the peppercorn beef and lamb chops. The beef was much like I would make myself and the lamb chops were cooked perfectly with a coriender sauce and a sweet sauce, maybe tamerind. Both entrees came with great mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked vegatables. Sweet potatoe fries were also excellent served with a spicy ramulade(?). This is a really nice space with friendly helpful staff. I highly recommend this place.
By they way; had cupcakes next door for desert. I did not know glutem free could be so good.
JFX Farmer's Market 2011!
I bought lobster for $5.95 pound at H-Mart last Friday. They were very lively but soft shell; never the less they were excellent tasting. Very fresh. I did have to communicate to the clerk that they had to be very lively and he was careful to pick and offer me only lively ones. My experience at Salt River has been good but at $5.95 a pound H-Mart is a great deal.

Which Greek Restaurant to Choose
I too love Zorba's grilled octopus. Had a dissapointing dinner at the Ikaros a couple of weeks ago. We had to wait a long time before being seated in a pratically empty restaurant, the tarama seemed to have been in the fridge for too long and had very little roe while the eggplant salad and grilled fish were just okay. I don't think I would go back.

Dining near Johns Hopkins?
You may want to try Meet 27 in Remington for a well executed unique menue in the 13 to 20 dollar range. See: http://meet27americanbistro.yolasite.com/
Right next door is Sweet Sins which I have not tryed, but poked my head in once and I thought it has potential. Same owners I think.
Meet 27 - Baltimore
I had dinner at Meet 27 on 27th Street in Remington and was impressed. The menu lean towards Indian and east asian in a nontraditional way. We had a salmon tartar appetizer and the paneer chile and vindaloo pork entrees. The salmon came with sweet potato chips and was good, but did not stand out. The chile was sort of Tai style, sweeter than I usually like but excellent. The vindaloo was spicy hot with cinnamin, bay leaf and indian spices seved with rice and vegatables; also execellent. Somebody in their kicthen knows what they are doing. I think the restaurent is gluten free and they seem to take pride in accomadating a variety dietary restrictions. I look forward to returning to try their other dishes.
Help 2 Canadian Foodies Fall in Love with Baltimore this Memorial Day Weekend.
I have had much better luck with crabs at Obrycki's then LP Steamers. LP does have more of the old Baltimore ambience, but they have failed me too often on the crabs.
Best Sushi in Baltimore?
My favorite is Matsuri by the Cross Street Market. Nothing exceptional, but consistent and fresh. Is exceptional out there?

Tandoor House of Kabob-Taylor Ave (Parkville)
I got carryout one time. Pretty decent. Mostly kabobs. More middle eastern than Indian. The lamb and chicken were both very tender and tasty. They claim to use organic meat which is important to me. I would go back, but would not make this a destination type place.
