Kaffeklatsch near Alewife?

Also the Whole Foods at Fresh Pond has tables and I have sat there for like 3-4 hours doing homework and no one bothers me. Just a walk over the bridge as well.

Birthday party venue?

What's a cool place, with low room rental, for a birthday party for about 50-75 people? Cambridge/Medford area with easy parking. We are open to anything (30-something professionals). A place that caters or allows us to bring in catering.
Thanks!

Farro pasta?

Anyone know where to buy farro pasta in the area? Whole Foods does not have any and I am aware of Amazon. Would love to find a specific store that sells it.

Thanks!

B-Side to be sold? Say it ain't so

I teach nearby and walk my preschoolers by often. They were fascinated by watching the tearing down and building of it all and I kept getting thirstier every time I went by.

I want breakfast, she wants lunch -- Boston

Romantic brunch... isn't that a little bit of an oxymoron?

That being said, how about Henrietta's Kitchen in Harvard. Eggs to order, fresh seafood, carving station.

H-Mart?

Awesome! Regarding what kinds of foods a store will stock.... they are going to (eventually) have to stock what the clientele want. So if people get in there and there is an overrepresentation of certain area and underrepresentation of others, shoppers will complain and eventually go elsewhere.

That being said, I think the store will make back it's opening costs within a week of it opening.

Gluten free party food?

What about those mexican layered dips: refried beans, sour cream, salsa, avocado, tomato, black olives served with chips.

Lamb Chop recipe?

I like lamb chops just simply grilled with salt, pepper, olive oil and a little lemon juice. But find a recipe for a mint gremolata to put on the lamb after it's done. Your life will be heaven.

Moussaka Help Please

Definetly still add the cinnamon/nutmeg to the sauce though, gives it so much depth.

I added sliced potato to a moussaka before..... one word of advice: cook the potatoes before adding them to the moussaka or they can be a little al dente.

trying to recreate Giacomo's house sauce @ home [moved from Boston board]

The chef/owner of an Italian restaurant told me once that she does not put oregano in her red sauce, until she is just about to serve it. It makes it bitter. Ever since I stopped doing that, my home made sauce has been fantastic.

A lot of people I know who make their own sauce, start with a sofrito of garlic, onion, bell pepper, sauteed in olive oil until soft. I do that then add a touch of wine, a little tomato paste, cook the alcohol out, then add the freshly ground tomatoes and simmer with a pinch of sugar for several hours, until it's reduced by half.

The thing with the lobster based sauce, is somehow the chefs there are adding some kind of a stock, probably made from lobster shells and other goodness. That will be the key to knowing how they do it.

Was that on Anthony Bourdain's show? I think he was in Vietnam or Thailand, right?

Legal Seafoods Oyster Tasting

If you want to go to an oyster festival that is not so fancy pants and full of name dropping (no offense T.Clark), keep your eye out on the Pemaquid Oyster Festival up near Damariscotta, Maine. It was in the fall last year and is a helluva good time. Great local brews and the oysters are grown by an aquaculture professor, which is kind of neat.

Check out the bluegrass band "Old Grey Goose" while you're up there.

Boston's Best Authentic Mexican/Tex Mex

The food at Jose's is mediocre at best. Tried it 2 or 3 times now... not fantastic. HOwever, they serve Correleo Tequila which is very hard to find and very yummy. SO sometimes we just get a margarita or 2 and get the hell out of there.

Portland - Lite dinner

I really enjoyed the Maine Crab Salad at Dry Dock. Fresh Maine Crab, served over a large mixed green salad.

Moon Pies needed for K'Port Wedding

Doesn't Yummies Candy Shop in York, sell Moon Pies? There was just something on Phantom Gourmet, not so long ago, talking about a Moon Pie baker in ME.... Can't remember the name though!

Tahitian Vanilla Beans

Ooohhh good to know! I need them for a beer I am making.

While I think of it, Penzey's Spice in Arlington (corner of Park Ave and Mass Ave.) might have them, too. And definetly give Formaggio Kitchen on Huron Ave in Cambridge a call too.

Beyond disappointed with New Ginza, Watertown

I had been wondering about Super Fusion. I just hate how small it is.

We really like Hana Sushi in North Cambridge, on Mass Ave, just north of Frank's. I have never had a bad meal in there and the prices are really reasonable. They just added a few new items to their menu, which is nice for us regulars.

Super88 Allston Status Update

Can anyone reflect on the amount of Thai food items on the shelves? When I was there in early August, it seemed that there were mostly Chinese and Japanese items and a derth of things for Thai cooking.
Thanks!

Bangkok fried Chicken

Has anyone ever made this by baking the chicken instead of deep frying it? Maybe you had to make some alterations... I'm trying to watch my calories, but I love crispy chicken too!

Homemade pizza - some ideas and tips

In college I bartended at one of Todd English's Figs restaurant. The pizza cook always told me to make sure that my dough was room temperature. And to make sure not to put too many toppings towards the middle. Because as it cooks, everything slides to the center of the pie.

"Suan Tsai"or "Tzai Tsai" Chinese pickled condiment

As kids, my mother would slice pickled mustard super thin, as thin as you can get them. Then stir fry with with oil and garlic, then add egg and scramble everything together. Then we would eat it over rice with home made hot sauce.... I still get cravings from time to time.

Sweet Liqueur in lemon trifle question

I agree with Limoncello or Grand Marnier... you could also try some of flavored German Schnapps or some Cointreau?

HELP! Killed a wild boar...now what?

There is a dish from Thailand called " Jungle Curry", which tastes especially yummy with wild boar. It is made with no coconut milk and can be unbelievable spicy.

I'm not a hunter myself, but certain animal populations do need some help staying under control by humans. Since we have killed or driven away too many natural predators, like wolves, foxes and coyotes. Enjoy the wild boar and if you ever come down to the Boston area, we would buy some off of you!

Bi Bim Bop Noodle- Fresh Side Cafe Amherst MA

Has anyone ever had any success making the amazingly spicy and yummy sauce for Bi Bim Bop Noodles from Fresh Side Cafe in Amherst MA? I just love them and travel from the Boston area out the hour and a half to eat them.

Let me know!

8/09 Gran Gusto: An Inflexible "No" Kitchen

Can I just say, how is someone who specializes in pizza a "chef". Did this person go to CIA in NY in order to make pizza? Somehow, I doubt it.

Pizza is street snack food in Italy. You get in on the run, or when you want to eat something on a waxed piece of paper. In America, it's something you eat while watching the game or looking for a meal you eat with your hands. "Gourmet pizza" is an oxymoron as far as I'm concerned.

That being said, Village Kitchen in Huron Village gets my vote anytime. Waaaaay better, bigger and less money than that StoneHearth Crap.

Portland, ME

For a simple lobster roll, go to The Dry Dock. It was huge and they put the mayo on the side! I also had a gigantic and fresh Mixed Salad with Crab that I could not finish it was so huge and but tasty.

Have a few drinks at Old Port Seafood and Grille. Dan the bartender makes some yummy drinks and the appetizers are yummy!

Fresh Side in Amherst MA- Bibim bop pasta

This is one of my most favorite things in the world to eat. I travel from Boston to go have it, like 1/month. Has anyone ever had any luck duplicating the Bi bim bop sauce that goes on the noodles? it's so much spicer than traditional sauce on a regular order of bi bim bop. And I LOVE it.
