You'd do well to drive to Hood River and have exceptional pizza and even better beer at Double Mountain Brewery. I'm serious. The best beer within several hundred miles of PDX and only an hour's drive (with scenery that doesn't suck).

And if you are inclined to catch a show at the Doug Fir (recommended for live music) make an effort to eat at Biwa nearby. http://www.biwarestaurant.com/location.html

I was also happily surprised by Tabla and their $24 multi-course dinner. Very nice work from the kitchen there, and a better than solid wine pairing/selection from a globally inspired list.

If I were visiting Toronto I'd be delighted to have recommendations of this caliber. Check'em out. Have a great time.

Vancouver, WA excellent new Mexican chow

We just had the pleasure of eating at a new and wonderful joint called Woody's Tacos on Columbia near 11th. Chef/owner Scott Holzinger headed up a number of kitchens in SF...such as Rose Pistola, Kuleto's, and others I'm forgetting now. At a Mexican dinner he cooked for friends (oh, MAN!!) prior to opening, he mentioned he's spent time in 28 of the 31 Mexican states. Clearly he has a passion for the culture and it does translate to the very fresh and delicious food. I believe as business builds he will offer more selections from the various regions of Mexico...for now I'd recommend local and visiting Hounds get in for what is likely the best Mex in the area. Excellent grilled prawn tacos, pork, green tomatillo salsa. And the price is right!
