did sa rit gol re-open

there are a few threads that document the end of the much beloved korean restaurant sa rit gol, which used to be in the serrano plaza at olympic and serrano.

however, google is showing a new sa rit gol open in the mini mall at western and 12th street.

can anyone confirm that it's the same ownership and/or same good food--extensive panchan, good traditional food, and that black cod casserole that melted in your mouth.

Walking Distance Anaheim Convention Center - Dinner - nice but not too expensive.

thanks das ubergeek. you are the man with the plan in orange county!! is the restaurant nice inside? Like with tablecloths and stuff? This is for my mom who will be hosting some professionals after a convention event. It should be nice, but as I said, she doesn't want to break the budget.

Walking Distance Anaheim Convention Center - Dinner - nice but not too expensive.

Hi all,

Looking for a place to have a dinner for about 20 within walking distance of the Anaheim Convention Center. It looks like there are a lot of options in the Steakhouse category (Ruth's Chris, etc.) as well as the Overpriced category (Catana, Roy's).

Is there anything in walking distance that might fit the bill--maybe something like an Il Fornaio or something, with a range of prices--not just $25-$38 entrees?

I've been checking some of the Anaheim threads, and I realize that this may be tough. Thanks in advance.

Transplanted from LA looking for Best Cheap Eats in Irvine: aka save me from the irvine corp.

thanks for the links all. just wanted you all to know that i went to a place called LAS FAJITAS on barranca just east of culver. it's in a little strip mall, other places there are thai kitchen, some ramen place, a pho place that seems popular.

got some great nachos there. unlike some of the other places in town, they actually put a giant plate w/ real cheese (not cheese sauce) in the oven. 5.99 no meat, 7.99 w/ meat.

got a pretty good whole fried fish at seafood noodle house ($7.95) and the lobster noodles ($9.95), which were really good--noodles were chewy, brown sauce was garlicky, coulda done with more bits of lobster though.

the fried fish came with a nice dipping sauce.

some people next to us had house special chicken, which looked awesome and a salt shrimp, also looked good.

there seem to be some more interesting places in this plaza.

Thanks guys! I'm going to try Seafood Noodle House for lunch now.

Also, I'm well versed in the Wholesome Choice. Any other rec's for the Asian places off Jeffrey?

Dear CHer's.

I've recently moved to Irvine from LA, and have been having a lot of trouble trying to figure out where the good non-chain, hole in the wall places are around here. I realize that LA is a very unique and wonderful food place, and the Irvine Corporation has a lot to do with the lack of variety and mom n' pop style restaurants here, but I'm hoping there are some hidden gems out there, yes?

I know there are Chowhounders in Irvine. Do you guys all just travel outside of the city for good food? Other than some of the business travel threads I haven't been able to find much.

Anything good, cheap, and/or ethnic would be appreciated. No chain restaurant. Closer to UC Irvine the better. If I'm going to have to suck it up and go to Costa Mesa or Garden Grove to find food (I've found those threads), then I guess that's that.

But there must be some type of guerrilla foodie operations going on here, right? Anyone with any good places to check out? Or even just favorites--best of the worst--would be appreciated!!!

Yes, I do know about the various restuarants in the Diamond Jamboree shopping center--but is there more stuff out there?

best restuarant in SGV to take homesick beijing-ers.

well, thanks for your suggestions. they went to sea harbor for dim sum today and declared it "worthy of china" so i think that's good!

best restuarant in SGV to take homesick beijing-ers.

i didn't. thank you! i will be sure to report back. i have had food with some of these guys in beijing and the skewers were something that were always a go to late night. it is to beijing bars as baconwrapped dogs are to LA.

best restuarant in SGV to take homesick beijing-ers.

i have a crew of chinese friends from beijing who have been on a rock and roll tour through texas for a month and have finally made it to california. they have been eating tex-mex and burgers for 4 weeks and are desperate for some authentic chinese food.

i think it's time to put the SGV to the test. where should i take these guys--and it has to be in the modest price range, these are punk rockers on a budget.

i checked the boards but "beijing" has turned up mostly duck places, and if memory serves correctly, those places are $$$.

i'm sure they would be open to any and all specialties from their region, with a premium on authenticity and reasonable price.

THANKS!

Golden State - 3 strikes and out

yeah, i was considering writing a thoughtful riposte to rednyellow, since i do understand what he wrote, but i just don't agree with any of it, but i think mr. gold took the words right out of my mouth.

for the record: the burger bun is not crumbly (it's from rockenwagner), the curry ketchup is bananas good, the hotdog bun is of normal size. and if you peep the other golden state thread, the cucumber salad gets raves--and yeah, it's delicious and refreshing, esp. now that it's hot.

but if peeps don't wanna show, so much the better, it'll be easier for me to grab a seat.

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

you guys are great. lots of places to try. went to sushi ike last night. only two seats left at the bar, at the far end of the restaurant in front of the tallest and youngest chef.

courses:

1. amuse bouche - tiny tofu square w/ light sauce
2. monkfish liver - served w/ traditional sauce in a bowl
3. japanese red snapper sashimi - in a bowl, w/ scallion, salt, and lemon juice sauce--tasted like ceviche, very good
4. grilled octopus
5. tuna
6. yellowtail
7. raw shrimp
8. spanish mackerel
9. fried shrimp heads (see 7)
10. yellowtail w/ scallion handroll

i think at this point he asked if we wanted anything. i don't think i'm forgetting anything, but i could be.

11. scallop w/ shiso leaf
12. crab handroll

one green tea, and one giant sapporo.

$84/person including tip.

it was pretty good. i miss the warm rice of nozawa. i was not in love with the rice here; didn't add much. but the fish/mollusks/crustaceans were all very good.

The Golden State on Fairfax

it's certainly a restaurant and not a bar, but it's not like it has waiters or anything. it seems to have more of a coffee shop vibe where you could hang out there forever and as long as you were nibbling on a cookie and had a cup of coffee on your table, no worries.

it's not like you're keeping wait staff from getting tips.

i would feel more than comfortable drinking beer for an hour or two here, then ordering food, and then drinking more and hanging out after i was finished eating.

i would also feel fine showing up, getting beer and no food, and then leaving. this place is super laid back.

The Golden State on Fairfax

the group watching the giants/dodgers game was about 14-18 people, i'd say. they had all the tables against the wall pushed together to accomodate.

you could easily squeeze 6 in the booths by the window. maybe 8.

but as the other guy said, you could push table together, etc. to get your party seated. there's space for it. just a question of how packed it is.

i give it a thumbs up. you should check it out w/ your friends.

The Golden State on Fairfax

went last night. still packed around 10 PM. peeps watching the dodgers/giants game on the wall mounted HD screen.

had the regular dog. grilled on grates. nice char (enough to give it some marks). good snap. soft bun, that seemed to be warmed as well, but not toasted. you get your choice of two toppings, i chose grilled onions and sauerkraut--i think there is relish, muffaletta tapenade, red peppers, etc, but i'm a grilled onions and sauekraut kind of guy. + one side. i got the persian cucumber salad, which was light fresh and spring-y.

washed it down w/ a horny devil, a belgian style ale from alesmith in san diego. great combo.

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

the ever reliable CHOW! thanks everyone. i gotta get out to sushi more (to more places than just nozawa). i feel i've got a healthy arsenal of places to try.

i'll try to do a report after thursday.

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

ike is actually in the best location for us.

do they take reservations? or are they needed?

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

yup. i'm at $100/person.

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

haha! thanks, my friend was like, "i don't think the chowhound board will like my taste in sushi."

personally, i do tend towards more traditional and less americanized sushi. i think maybe i'm being difficult by trying to combine her taste with mine for omakase... with rolls, i'm thinking hand rolls, not philly/cali/spider rolls.

i definitely have no problem naming a price point at the top of my meal, i just want to be sure that for $100 i get more than just 5 things brought to me. i'm worried from other omakase's i've seen on the board at the restaurants listed above that it might be the case...

sushi suggestions, not breaking the bank

been trolling the board, but can't find an answer to this.

a friend and i want to get sushi tomorrow night. she is from new york. has been to nozawa and omi. we're looking to try a new place.

preferably we'd like some type of omakase experience at a price point of about $100 (food only).

she likes crispy rice w/ tuna, salmon, scallops, and interesting rolls.

i generally go to nozawa, but i'm pretty open minded. i like to see what's out there and how things are presented, etc.

a trusted friend says his top 5 sushi places are:

nozawa
mori
sushi sushi (beverly hills)
sushi gen (downtown)
kiriko (sawtelle)

but searching those places made me fear for the price tag.

anyways. i'm asking you for help. $100. omakase. delicious. in the LA area (btwn santa monica and downtown is good, i don't think i'd go much south of the 10).

if you could include info on necessity of reservations, that would be very very appreciated. we'd like to sit at the bar.

The Golden State on Fairfax

forgot to add that i had SCOOPS for dessert. a friend had ruby red grapefruit sorbet and i had a mascarpone and something...forget right now. they were stocking brown bread, and i asked the guy behind the counter and he said that tai (owner of SCOOPS) comes by twice a day, once in the morning to drop off the SCOOPS and once at night to collect. they get new flavors every day.

The Golden State on Fairfax

as a former bay area resident, it's so awesome to have a reasonably priced place in LA where the owners really care about beer and food selections.

went for the first time last night. wanted to start off with something light before starting my meal, so i ordered a craftsman hefe, instead they recommended that i get a belgian style ale by craftsman called la luz. it was a perfect early warm spring evening beer.

ordered the racer 5 IPA and burger w/ fries. burger comes on a rockenwagner bun (SM farmer's mkt/bakery, venice restaurant) with a nice egg white wash, which is nice--the bun won't break even though it stacks up high. medium rare cooked to perfection w/ some greens, cheese, and bacon. no extra condiments needed. i highly recommend eating the french fries with the curry ketchup. sweet, tangy, and perfect.

looking forward to going back and eating some hotdogs. great relaxed atmosphere. new favorite in the neighborhood. can't beat the food and choices for the price point in this area.

What do YOU order from Zankou?

scan the board or the LA times for the story of zankou and how it got divided by the family. i think the way we tell is how the garlic paste comes. the foil topped garlic paste, i think is one part of the family, and the original clear plastic garlic containers is the other one.

i go to the one on sunset and normandie (original clear plastic garlic containers).

i order a whole chicken + large tabbouleh. i know the large tabbouleh is a rip off, but i don't feel like chopping parsley.

i have only ever gone to this one, and this is the only thing i ever order. it's been consistent.

Dukkguk?

sa rit gol on olympic and serrano. get the braised cod w/ radish while you're at it.

making lamb burgers. where to buy lamb?

i'm making lamb burgers.

i know that my local albertsons and other big grocery stores sell ground lamb and lamb chops. but offer little else.

when i make cow burgers, i like to grind my own meat out of various steak cuts of my choosing.

i'm wondering if this is possible with lamb. what kind of cut i should use, and where to buy it? since i'm assuming that it's not lamb chops.

thanks!

where to buy best cuts for bbq (not grilling)

thanks for the rec's.

i went to my albertson's butcher for the pork shoulder. i noticed that they sell pork shoulder but either cut in half or in parts, so the butcher said i would just have to call a couple days in advance to let them know that the day of, to save a couple--i bought two whole shoulders. they turned out great. (about 17 pounds total).

albertsons also has the same brand of pork spareribs as cosco. i don't remember what the brand is, but i do remember that they were the same brand when i went to both and checked.

will report on others as the opportunities arise.

A bar, a big TV and the DNC?

you can find events by zipcode on a google map on barack's website.

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/search_simple

you should find something here.

where to buy best cuts for bbq (not grilling)

thanks all.

i live in los feliz, but don't mind driving too far for food since i'm in pasadena, studio city, or santa monica quite a bit.

i'm mostly concerned with the brisket, since that's the next thing i've decided to take down on my smoker, so i'll have to check out smart & final to get the packer cut.

where to buy best cuts for bbq (not grilling)

hey hounds.

i'm cooking low and slow with smoke, but i've been less than impressed with the meat selections at the local albertsons.

where can i go to get a real cut of:

brisket?

pork ribs?

beef ribs?

pork shoulder?

Best Pizza in Silverlake

tomato pie is really good. and as an ex-new yorker i can attest that it would hold its own in the city. get a cheese pie and a pepperoni. crispy chewy thin crust. flavorful sauce. just all around good.
