One Week in and Around San Sebastian: Narrowing Down the Choices

Thank you for both of these helpful suggestions.

On day 2, we are actually having a private tour (just the two of us) in the afternoon that will have some bites of pinchos and some time in the market. Basically, it is an attempt to get our feet wet and see the city a bit with someone who knows it.

Bay 7: very good to hear about extebarri. i assume that, after the beef, i will be pleasantly stuffed. i didn't know they had an outside option. i will request it, thank you.

FYI: Our only dinner reservation is Arzak. All the rest are lunch, leaving the evenings to do precisely as you suggest.

Thanks for your suggestion of the Guggenheim.

One Week in and Around San Sebastian: Narrowing Down the Choices

Here is our revised itinerary based on further research and peoples' suggestions:

The current plan is:

Day 1: Fly into Bilbao and drive to SS ... no food plans ... might do some stuff in Bilbao

Day 2: We scheduled a private market tour and pintxos tasting through San Sebastian Food. We have dinner reservations at Arzak (despite some trepidation based on CHers comments, my wife has wanted to eat here for years and so it remains a must).

Day 3: Spending the day in Getaria. We have lunch reservations at Elkano and will likely be back in San sebastian for a dinner of pintxos.

Day 4: Lunch at Zuberoa. We haven't figured out dinner plans. Perhaps we will head over to one of the other town near San Sebastian (Hondarribia, Irun, etc.) for dinner. Thoughts?

Day 5: Lunch at Mugaritz.. Dinner of pintxos.

Day 6: Day trip somewhere, location undecided. Thoughts?

Day 7: Lunch at Etxebarri, no dinner figured out, but spending night in Bilbao and so might try and eat there.

Day 8: Fly out early

Thanks for everyone's help. We will be sure to post reviews of places that we try. Any thoughts on filling in gaps would be much appreciated. (As an aside, we care far, far less about wine than we do food.)

EMP--now what?

actually, my wife once made me a cake shaped like a yellow cab. it was delicious, though she cooks for a living. i didn't realize that each bite caused an unseen existential crisis for the city and its residents. oops.

also, i just don't understand what you mean by "exploiting" the city and hurting its "real culture." it implies denigration, but EMP is paying homage. great cities are vibrant, living things that change, adapt, evolve, and grow. don't be scared, it will be alright.

EMP--now what?

I don't know. It's weird though. My grandfather owned a pharmacy way back when. My mom, as a young girl, would go and get stuff like egg creams. She hadn't had one in decades before I took her to EMP. She absolutely loved it. Talks about it to this day. Was the thing precisely like the one her father once made? Not at all. But that didn't keep her from enjoying both the dish and the experience of having it made table side.

I am certainly not too educated, too cool, too proper, too prudish, or too whatever to enjoy the food and the show. But, to each his/her own.

EMP--now what?

i just don't understand this response. the cookies (especially the savory one) are also really freaking good.

it doesn't matter much to me whether they are a high brow version, an epcot center version, or a bastardized version of some quintessential nyc dish. they taste good and are fun to eat. that is enough for me.

what is "really new york"?

EMP--now what?

Really? I have found things like the egg cream, appetizing platter, black and white cookies, etc. quite delightful. Not to mention the locally-brewed beers and classic new york cocktails, which seem far from "cartoonish." This thread reminds me of the classic line from Wayne's World.

But, alas, I also like Broadway.

EMP--now what?

Which other restaurant that you have been to, currently ranked above, EMP, is he trying to imitate and how? If anything, this seems like an attempt to separate EMP from the masses.

--edit: uhockey beat me to it.--

Monday Dinner in BIlbao? (May)

Im in this boat, too. We land in Bilbao on a Monday afternoon. Plan on sleeping in SS that night. Thoughts in either location or along the way? Nothing that requires reservations.

Tickets and 41 degrees

Related: Is it even worth considering driving to Barcelona from San Sebastian to heat at 41 degrees? There are reservations available on the day we would want to go.

Reservations at Arzak and Mugaritz

ugh. they don't seem to take reservations online or via fax. i guess its time to find someone who speaks spanish and buy a phone card, unless there is another option someone knows about?

Reservations at Arzak and Mugaritz

Yeah, I saw that one. Indeed, the reviewer's palate and taste in restaurants rarely coincides with my own (based on those places we have both eaten).

It is a tricky balancing act to travel half-way across the world to eat at restaurants you have never been to and for which you have no trusted resource. I anticipate loving some, hating others, and forgetting more than I remember. My approach is basically to look for overlapping data points. I know have two hits on Elkano plus a third in that I love rustic seafood restaurants. We'll see.

Much thanks! I appreciated reading your reviews and will definitely consider Elkano. Any idea on whether reservations are needed, or could we just call the day before?

Dining Dilemma

Are you more interested in savory or pastry? Classic techniques or a modernist approach? Beer, wine, or cocktails?

These might all factor in to the right decision for you.

It was Thursday night. It was also the very best duck I have had anywhere.

We also got an awesome mini-course of duck tongue prior to the big show.

Minetta Tavern for wife's 30th Birthday ( good idea or not)? Also, Black Label Burger-- Is It Worth It?

If she wants to go there, take her.

I don't know what "worth the ... cost" means to you, since it is a terribly expensive burger, but I know that I can't leave that place without eating at least half of one. I try and forget it is a hamburger and just appreciate it for what it is: wicked good.

EMP - lunch or dinner?

EMP is one of the very few restaurants in the city were you can get a remarkably similar experience any time of day. You will be happy with either.

In the United States, dinner is usually the big meal of the day and so I tend to end up at EMP around dinner time. Cultural habit, i guess. But the times I have been there for lunch, I have really, really enjoyed myself.

Yeah. I absolutely love the back left corner table in the front room at EMP. Soon-to-be Mrs. NMP and I have sat there our last few times, and it is cozy and private, while still offering a great view.
