Looking for Pierogies to buy in Toronto

Prague, on Queen west of Bathurst, sells their pierogies frozen. I haven't tried them, but the ones the serve in their restaurant are quite good. http://www.theprague.ca/

Seeking information on Ontario tomato variety

I would suggest contacting Upper Canada Seeds - they might be able to point you toward a similar tomato. http://www.uppercanadaseeds.ca/

Pizza Libretto - family friendly?

They definitely have booster seats, and I *think* I've seen high chairs too, but you may want to call to double check.

Any Urban Garden Share Programs in T.O.? I provide my backyard and get produce in return...

The city of Toronto has community gardens and allotment gardens, but there is often a waiting list to get one.

Foodshare is a great resource to at least find answers to these questions.

Help for a picky Valentines Date

I'm not sure about special requests on such a busy night, but I'd talk to 93 Harbord. Their veg options are delicious and could probably be made into low-carb options.

good food and a friendly/sociable crowd?

What about places like Oddfellows or Pizzeria Libretto that have communal tables? I haven't been to Oddfellows yet, but I've sat at the Libretto communal table a few times and have often chatted with people around me.

veg poutine in toronto

A warning about Futures: the mushroom gravy is not vegetarian, it's made with chicken stock.

Honey / best of College-Ossington

jayt90's honey suggestion is a good one. That vendor will let you taste everything he offers, and he has interesting flavours from around the world.

That said, I think local honey is an even nicer gift! Foodshare (http://www.foodshare.net) distributes honey produced by the Toronto Beekeepers Cooperative right in the city. I'm not sure whether they've bottled this year's harvest yet, but they will sell out. You could also go to the SLM farmer's market - there's an Ontario honey vendor there as well. I also saw some Dutchman's Gold (Carlisle, Ontario) and a couple others at the Healthy Butcher on Queen West this week.

I got some good responses when I asked about Ontario honey a couple of months ago as well: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/563832

*full disclosure - I am a member of the Toronto Beekeepers Cooperative, but I don't benefit from Foodshare's sale of the honey we produce.

Anyone know what happened to Kensington Organic Ice Cream?

I suspect based on their notice of eviction, etc., that they won't be back in another location. The past few weeks have seemed pretty desperate - the addition of the $2 grilled cheese to their menu definitely didn't seem like a good sign!

Ontario honey

Oh that does sound like a great trip!

Thanks to all for the suggestions.

Hexagonal jars

Thanks...they ship to Canada, but only by UPS, which charges obscene fees for cross-border shipments. I may splurge anyway though - what a great selection!

Ontario honey

Does anybody have a favourite source for Ontario honey? I'm not looking for any particular kind, just wondering what's out there to try and where I could find it.

Board's Honey from Restoule is one of my favourites, though I haven't found it in Toronto (other than at the Royal Winter Fair some years).

Hexagonal jars

I've just done my first honey harvest as a new beekeeper, and now I'm looking for a reasonably-priced source for a variety of sizes of hexagonal jars. I'm in Toronto and hoping to find a local source, but hardware and grocery stores have been no help. Would a restaurant supply store carry such a thing? I would appreciate suggestions for the type of store I could look for, or a specific store in Toronto.

Barring that, are there any online sources with decent shipping to or within Canada I should check out?

Thanks very much for any help!

Any good spots in the Bathurst & St. Clair area?

If you're willing to walk a few blocks west, you could try Ferro - a casual Italian place.

The pizzas are quite good and are around $12 each (though I ordered one with arugula and essentially got a pizza with a massive salad on top...a bit of a surprise). I've also had some decent pasta dishes there - they're a few dollars more than the pizzas. My favourite thing is the mushroom bruschette. It's heavy, rich and delicious!

BEST cookie in T.O - Le Gourmand

Le Gourmand cookies are great when you want a cookie that's big enough to be a meal. My other favourite are from the Harbord Bakery - the ones with pistachios and big shards of chocolate and white chocolate are to die for. They're a little pricey - about $1.50-$2.00 depending on the weight of the cookie - but absolutely worth it.

Pizzeria Libretto anyone know when its doors open at 221 ossington?

Last night there was a sign on the door that said they were having a private party, but would be open to the public tonight.

(I'm a frequent reader and new poster...looking forward to participating in the Toronto chow discussions!)
