Bar Food near South Broad Street

Ruth Chris has a great Happy Hour at the bar from 5-6:30. It's a couple of blocks from the Suzanne Robert's theater.

cake supplies and wrapping stuff?

If you can get to the suburbs, SGS Paper in Glenside has every kind of bakery paper product. I buy all my cake boxes, cupcake liners, cake rounds and disposable platters, etc., there.

Great New Restaurant in Horsham

I actually had a conversation with the owner about the bar. I commented that it must have cost a fortune to get a liquor license in PA. His answer was "don't ask" but not as expensive as getting a liquor license in NJ in the Cherry Hill Mall. I was surprised when they asked if I wanted to buy a margarita and they pointed out the full bar. The owner is a really nice guy and as I said before, everything I tried was excellent.

Great New Restaurant in Horsham

A new restaurant, Taqueria del Sol opened in the old Baja Fresh location on Welsh Road in front of the shopping center with Lowes and Sam's Club. What a great spot! The food is delicious and quite inexpensive; a small menu that is "Mexican fusion". It is a fast casual restaurant that has a full bar; a very unusual combination. We had shrimp corn chowder (fabulous) , a Memphis taco (chopped pork with spicy cole slaw and BBQ sauce), a brisket taco with pico del gallo and a side of rice and refried beans. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. I checked on the internet and Taqueria del Sol is a very successful small chain from Atlanta. This Horsham spot is the first location in Pennsylvania. If you're in the area, I highly recommend you give it a try.

John's Roast Pork New Owners?

We stopped at John's Roast Pork today on our way home from the airport. We have always found that John's always made our favorite steak sandwich. However, it seemed as though the people working there were not the same people and the sandwiches were no where near as good. They were smaller, the meat was dry and basically tasteless. Certainly not the John's Roast Pork steak sandwiches we have grown to love. Does anyone know if they have new owners? I hope not! Maybe it was just an off day.

lightning round dinner before Merriam on Wednesday

You can always go to the food court in the Bellevue. Not a great option but its quick, close to the theater, and everyone can get what they want.

Hatch Chiles available locally?

Yes, the one in Horsham is where I saw them last summer. But I would assume from their e-mail that all their stores are carrying them.

Pastrami

The corned beef is excellent at Hershel's. Corned beef and pastrami are meant to be hot and sliced by hand. The cold, thinly sliced corned beef usually served in Philadelphia delis like Ben and Irvs is a different food than the corned beef that is served in NY.

Hatch Chiles available locally?

I just received an e-mail from Fresh Market promoting Hatch Chilies. I know they sold them last year and were roasting them outside the store.

Bialys in Philly suburbs?

Real bialys are almost non existent in the Philadelphia area. I always bring a few dozen home from Florida. However, I think I remember seeing some realistic looking bialys at the Famous Deli on 4th street. I can't vouch for them but they looked pretty good. Last week, I saw some terrible looking specimens at the Whole Foods in Jenkintown. Good luck in your search.

Chocolate Rugalach

They may be originally may have been different types of pastries but I believe in Philadelphia the names are interchangeable. I grew up in New York and the pastries are always called rugalach; here in Philadelphia the same ones are called schnecken. The traditional way to make rugalach is to roll into a circle, cut into triangles and roll individually. Rolling into a roll and slicing is a short cut that works well.

Chocolate Rugalach

Curds and Whey in Jenkintown has wonderful chocolate rugalahs. They call them schnecken though. I'm not sure about the price but they are very delicious.

Ambler Donut Company???!!

I was so dismayed at the recent postings about the decline in quality of Ambler Donuts because they were amazing when they first opened. I got a dozen this morning and I am happy to report that they were as good as they were early this summer. They rearranged the interior so that the donuts are displayed directly in front of the counter so it's easier to see them. They have some new varieties that are excellent including the french toast that AmblerGirl mentioned and a blueberry pancake donut that is similar to the blueberry pie but with a maple icing. I'm a purist at heart so the glazed is still my favorite.

Twisted Kitchen in Colmar

My husband works in Line Lexington and brought home sandwiches from the Twisted Kitchen on Friday evening. We got a hot roast beef sandwich and a chicken cutlet sandwich with spinach and provolone. Both were excellent; I particularly enjoyed the horseradish sauce that was served with the roast beef sandwich. The owner has restaurant and catering experience as he used to own the Twisted Gourmet in the Fort Washington industrial park.

Location of A&M Halal Food Truck?

After seeing the piece on the food network last winter we found the A&M Halal Food truck behind the Drexel buildings off 31st and Market. The falafel omelette hoagie was fabulous. The people running the truck were very friendly and told us they were planning on opening a restaurant in Northeast Philadelphia. Unfortunately, when we went back a couple of months ago, the truck was no longer there and no one knew where it had gone. As we were leaving I noticed that a Thai food truck had a sandwich on the menu called something like "The Famous A&M Sandwich". We ordered the sandwich and were thrilled to find that it was the same delicious falafel omelette hoagie. I don't remember the name of the truck but it was one of the first trucks off the corner and it sold Thai food and different interesting curries. Good luck in your search. The sandwich is worth looking for.

Dinner around 8th and Walnut

I'm going with my daughter to see Miss Saigon at the Walnut Street Theater. I know that there are quite a few new restaurants in that area but I'm not very familiar with them. We're thinking about Garces Trading Company. Thanks for any thoughts or recommendations.

Is there a ristorante in Philly that serves real garlicky pasta with white clam sauce?

I moved to Philadelphia from NY in 1976 and I have been searching for good Italian food for 35 years. I am amazed that in a city that has so many Italians the southern Italian food is no better than mediocre. You can go to any neighborhood restaurant or pizza place in New York and get better food than at any Italian restaurant in Philadelphia. Actually, I just returned from visiting my mother in West Palm Beach, Florida and the Italian food was so much better than anything I've eaten here. I don't understand why.

Good bakeries in the burbs?

I haven't heard what is being built on that lot. I assumed it was going to be another bank because they're digging a basement for what could be a vault. But it makes sense if it is a bakery to build the kitchen in the basement. I hope it's true; we could use a bakery. I used to think it would be a good location for a Starbuck's before they were everywhere.

Recommendations for Restaurant Week next month?

We have a reservation at Le Bec Fin for restaurant week. Has anyone been there for restaurant week in the past and is it worth going? We've been to Le Bec Fin several times in the past 30 years and hope that the restaurant week experience doesn't tarnish our memories of this wonderful institution. Our other option is Butcher and Singer. Any comments?

Has anyone tried Timber?

I agree again with Bucksguy. Timber is TERRIBLE. I've had bad meals at new restaurants and I've always given them a second chance if they appear to have potential. Timber only has potential for failure with bad management attitude combined with poorly executed food. "Simpkinsj" is obviously associated with the restaurant in some way because I've spoken with at least a dozen people who have eaten at Timber and have nothing positive to say about it. I guess my sarcasm was misunderstood by some. I certainly didn't consider Inn Flight to be a fine restaurant but Timber almost makes me miss it.

Arpeggio, Spring House, review or comments?

I agree with AmblerGirl. Arpeggio is a consistently excellent, casual restaurant. Everything on the menu (over the years I've eaten everything on the menu) is delicious. Almost everyone I know loves Arpeggio.

Has anyone tried Timber?

Timber is probably the worst restaurant I've ever been to. It's not a bad looking place but the menu is very limited and fairly expensive. My husband order a chicken caesar salad that consisted of no more than a cup of romaine and shaved slices of a half a chicken breast. Our friends and I ordered the seared tuna salad that was $15. It was a small plate of wilted, slimy, brown field greens with pieces of mushy, black avocado and a couple of old romaine cores. On the side of the plate were 5 small slices of tuna (perhaps 3 ounces). It was missing the mango and the crispy wontons that were described on the menu. Called this to the servers attention and she said she would see what she could do. I asked to see a manager. Although disinterested, she came over to the table and said something convoluted about the back of the house not knowing what the front of the house was doing. No "let us remake the salads", no "can we bring you something else". Her attitude was there's nothing I can do besides not charging you. We paid for our drinks, left the waitress a tip and left. No one apologized, no one said try us again. Bucksguy is right; EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE. The old Inn Flight was a five star restaurant compared to Timber.

Best Cheap Breakfast in Hatboro/Horsham/Willow Grove?

I believe that the diner you are referring to is the Red Lion. Breakfasts are plentiful and quite good. Lancer's Diner, a little farther south on 611, has even better breakfasts. Their home fries are great.

Restaurants in Lancaster

Thanks for all the suggestions. We're leaving tomorrow morning and are planning 2 lunches and dinners between bridge sessions. I'm happy to know that we won't be forced to eat at chain restaurants.

Restaurants in Lancaster

Thanks for the recommendations. I remembered that there was supposed to be a good Thai restaurant near the outlets but I couldn't remember its name. We'll definitely try Lemon Grass. I know that part of Lancaster is a "chain restaurant paradise" so thanks for the suggestions of independent restaurants.

Grandma's Grotto

We just drove by Grandma's Grotto about 10 pm and I am happy to report that they are still open. This place never seems to be crowded but the food is good. They are a nice couple that moved their family from Staten Island, NY to Horsham because they thought it would be a better place for their children. I hope they can make it.

Ambler Girl...what's the deal with Costa Deli?

You're so right. Many of the employees look like they could have been extras in the movie "Deliverance" but if you can get passed appearances they make a great steak sandwich.
