Diet Coke - Desperately Seeking Kosher for Passover in LA!

I'm in Toronto, Canada and here's the situation here- probably similar to LA:
Diet Coke can only be used on Pesach by Sefardic Jews because it contains kitnyos-based ingredients. Ashenazic Jews only have regular coke available during Pesach.
Consult with your rabbi of kashruth advisor.

Raw Cocoa

Where can I purchase raw cocoa in bean form in Toronto area?

Sushi

What is sushi? Is it basically rice with either fish or vegetables enclosed within, or is it fish or vegetables held together by rice? What's the "nafkamina" ? What Bracha does one make on eating sushi? Thanks.

Won-Ton Hut: Good food spoiled by stubborn owner!

Sounds a lot like the "Soup Nazi" character on Seinfeld.

Partridge For Christmas

A unique way to celebrate Christmas might be to have partridge instead of turkey for Christmas Dinner.
Anyone know if partridge is available at a butcher shop or restaurant in the GTA ?

Kosher ideas in Toronto

If I am not mistaken, I think Whole Foods on Avenue Road will prepare a gift basket of kosher products on request.

Wolfberries or Goji berries

Wolfberries or Goji berries are reported to be an excellent diet fruit and are the latest fad in diet foods.
They have a high glycemic index and powerful anti-oxidant properties. High in vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
They are grown in China and Tibet.
Does anyone know if they are available in the GTA? Chinatown perhaps?

Ice Cream Waffles

Is there any place in the GTA today where you can find ice cream waffles like you used to buy in the tunnel leading from Eaton"s Main store to Eaton's Annex way back when I was a kid in the 40's and 50's? As I recall, you could also buy chocolate malted soft ice cream cones in that tunnel as well. Mmmmm!

Old Dutch Potato Chips

Old Dutch Potato Chips in Canada are now certified kosher by O-U.

Anyone Remember The Carousel Drive-In Restaurant ?

Yes, The Shrimp Kitchen was on the east side of Bathurst St.
After the Shrimp Kitchen went out of business, I believe the location was taken over by a restaurant by the name of "The Pie Tree", which lasted for a few years and then also went out of business.

Anyone Remember The Carousel Drive-In Restaurant ?

On Bathurst St. between Lawrence and Wilson - west side of Bathurst in the late '50's and early '60's.

Similar to "Arnold's" Drive-In on the old TV sitcom "Happy Days"

Anyone remember?

Anything like the Carousel in GTA now?

Where to find mini- burger buns or slider buns in Toronto?

You can buy them at Dollarama Stores at $1.50 for eight mini buns.

Best Steak Restaurant in Toronto - Suggestions?

Forget about Jacob & Co. and Morton's which are more sizzle than steak.
Do you want to spend your money on fancy surroundings and atmosphere, or do you want to taste steak as God intended?
Listen to me. Here's a well-kept secret:
The best steaks in Toronto are to be had at House of Chan ---Eglinton Ave. West just west of Bathurst St.
H of C has been in business for about 50 years. What could be a better recommendation than that?
Trust me.

King Solomons in Toronto, Ontario

Ah, Yes! King Solomon's Table. Or as I prefer to call it: King Solomon Stable.
Way over-priced. Probably the only buffet in the world that offers you a salad plate rather than a dinner plate to fill from a very mediocre buffet that has a selection of about twelve items.
Nothing to write home about.

King Solomons Restaurant

Sorry to inform you, but 398 West is no longer in business.

Caplansky's- the emperor has NO clothes

Why limit the thesis put forth in this discussion to Caplansky's ?
I feel that the same complaint can be made against almost any restaurant. I exclude, of course, the fast-food chains whose food and service remains constantly the same.
Doesn't the quality of food and service of independent eating establishments always seem to deteriorate over time? Or perhaps this phenomenon is also partly the result of human nature.
Isn't it a fact that when we recall a past experience, our memories always seem to magnify pleasant experiences and minimize unpleasant ones? Why, for instance, do we always remember the past as "the good old days"? In fact they were not nearly as good at the time we experienced them as they seem when recalled later on.

Eskimo Food In GTA

Anyone know of any decent Eskimo Restaurants in the GTA?

Smelly asparagus?

The cause of the strange odor in urine after eating asparagus is the metabolic by-product oxalic acid, which is excreted in the urine. While the odor is unpleasant, the chemical is harmless.

YOU GOTTA GO TO BARQUE FOR BBQ!

I notice a remarkable similarity in the comments posted about Barque BBQ on its opening and other previously newly-opened places. Remember Caplansky's, Stockyards, etc. etc. All had initial rave reviews, followed by minor complaints and criticisms. Then more serious complaints and criticisms. Finally, a short while later, no raves; no complaints; no nuthin'.!
I guess it's just human nature. Like a surfer searching for that perfect wave, the true foodie is always searching for the perfect eating experience. And in almost every case, the ultimate bottom line is something less than complete satisfaction..
But with the opening of each new restaurant, hope springs eternal in the true foodie's breast.

Angus Beef

What does the designation "angus beef" actually mean?
I understand that there is a breed of cattle known as Aberdeen Angus which originated in Scotland.
But what is it specifically about angus beef that makes it better and more expensive than non-angus beef?
Can the average person actually taste the difference between angus and non-angus?
Does it have anything to do with "ageing"?
Are these cattle raised and/or fed differently than non-angus? Or is it just the breed which is different?
I realize you can identify Kobe or Waygu by its appearance. Can you do the same with angus?

All Appetizer Seder

There is a question as to whether quinoa is kitnyios . If you are Ashkenazic, you should consult a halachic authority.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Just a simple little request: Where can I get the perfect grilled cheese sandwich in the GTA?

Will a couple be able to eat a full meal here without having to take out a mortgage on their home?

Diners, drive-ins and dives
