Mangosteen's on Queensway

Hello all,

I felt compelled to write my own brief review having had a great meal at Mangosteen's on Friday night. We were looking or a Thai restaurant to satisfy my pregnant cravings, but were looking for somewhere new to try. We found Mangosteen's on Urbanspoon and decided to give it a go. Could not have been happier with the choice. It's not a large spot, but it was nicely decorated. Clean bathrooms (which goes a long way with me). The service was impeccable. Fong was a wonderful host and made several recommendations to us. All the food is made to order, including all sauces. For a table of 4, we had three appetizers, 4 mains which we shared and 3 desserts, again shared. The food was, as promised, fresh and all was wonderful! We especially enjoyed the chili fish, and the grilled beef. I thought the pad thai was a cut above that which i've had recently. No ketchupy taste anywhere! Loved it! We also had the red curry chicken which was excellent. The only have 3 desserts on the menu - sticky rice with mango, banana fritters with coconut or mango ice cream and a deep-fried banana with ice cream (forgive me as these aren't the exact titles). Fong brought us a complementary sample of the sticky rice dish as we ordered 2 of the fritters and one deep fried banana. The ice cream was light, fruity and wonderful. The fritters were my favorite with just the right amount of sweetness, but the sticky rice was really a fabulous comfort food way to end the night! Less than $100 for 4 of us, and we practically had to roll out of the place we were so full!

My only concern is that the place is hard to find, especially if you are driving Eastbound on The Queensway which we were. I couldn't see the place on Google street view either. Its in the same plaza as the Fish and chips restaurant. Across from Winners. On a Friday night, there were only 2 tables there (and one was our table of 4). I really hope more people try this place out so it doesn't go out of business. I know I will be back! They have a lunch menu for $7.95 as well.

Great salads in Brampton/ Mississauga

My husband is trying to change his lifestyle and eating habits. We recently moved to Brampton and he is wondering where to get a great salad or other healthy foods in the area. Any suggestions are appreciated (especially as his new eating habit are likely to become mine - gotta take one for the team!)

Thanks!

Just wondering if anyone has tried the Burrito Boyz location in Brampton (on Queen Street). Will be in Brampton today and kind of have a burrito craving....

middle eastern in Mississauga

I will be taking a younger cousin of for lunch and thought an introduction to Middle Eastern food is warranted as his only experience with it has been a chicken shawarma. He is in Mississauga (Winston Churchill/ Dundas) so I was hoping for some recs in the Mississauga area. Eat in preferred. I have been to Aladdins on Hurontario several times, but felt the quality has been slipping in the last year or two. I was looking for an alternate destination.

Thanks!

best fish and chips in Saint John's (and surrounding area)

I did mean Saint John, NB. Sorry. My husband nearly blew a gasket when he saw I had an "s" on John. Oops. Thanks for the tip though.

best fish and chips in Saint John's (and surrounding area)

Just curious to see what you would recommend. My husband is from this area and has taken me to Deluxe which is his fave for nostalgic reasons. But there must be something better out there. Help!

Fran's on Front - same Sh*t different pile?

Anyone been yet?

La Passione Italiana - any reviews?

Hubby and I got a gift certificate to this restaurant and I was wondering if anyone has been and what you thought.

Where To Find Jicama?

My friends from Mexico used to go to Kenzington Market for their Jicamas.

Halifax Original Donair- Now open in Burlington!!!!

Just got back from visiting my in-laws in NB, and my husband is already having east coast withdrawal. Are there any places downtown (or close to) that make good donairs? That being said, i'm sure he'll have no qualms about driving to Milton or Burlington to try out this place!

Baby friendly Father's day brunch

Any suggestions for a downtown location for father's day brunch. Looking for something casual, somewhere a 6 month old baby wouldn't be frowned upon? We have a car, so i'm not at all opposed to a drive if the food/ atmosphere was worth it. Thanks!

Is the new Oliver & Bonacini Café in the old Shopsies (Front St.) open yet?

Would you say the cafe is child friendly? Was thinking of taking my husband there for Fathers day brunch, but we have a 6mth old that we would be bringing along.

Best Jamaican Patties - GTA

Ackee and saltfish patties from Patty King in Kensngton market! I don't think I can go back to eating beef patties now! Not when I know there are ackee and saltfish patties that taste that fantastic!

Gelato Fresco and Breyer's double churn...

I bought a container of Devil's Chocolate tonight and I had to restrain myself from eating the whole thing in one sitting. There is so little left now, I should have just finished it! Smooth mouthfeel indeed. I have heard much about the Alphonso mango flavour so i'm looking forward to trying that next. It was sold out at Loblaw's.

Gelato Fresco and Breyer's double churn...

I was strolling through the ice cream aisle and saw a container of Gelato Fresco flavour called OBF chocolate. OBF? Can anyone help decipher this? Which is better, devil's chocolate or OBF chocolate? One more question if I may. Is Breyer's double churn ice cream any good? I'm a Haagen Dazs girl myself. How does the double churn ice cream compare (if at all)?

Thanks in advance!

Joe Mama's - Average food, but the band was fantastic. I've been 3 times, and each time the Crowd was over 30. Went back for the entertainment, not for the food.

Sukhothai in Mississauga?

Has anyone been to the Sukhothai on Winston Churchill Blvd in Mississauga? I was wondering whether it had any connection with the downtown location, and if it was worth trying.

New Caribbean Sports bar near St Lawrence market

Went to this restaurant today on the way home from the market. I have gotten take out from the Shuter St location quite a few times and haven't been disappointed. The food at this location (Lower Jarvis) was great! I had the boneless chicken roti and really enjoyed it. Spicy enough to get the nose running, but not spicy enough to have me downing glasses of water. Just the way I like it. My only complaint was that there was a lot of potato in the roti. I guess they are trying to save on the chicken. Next time I think i'll ask for less potato (or none) in my roti. The Shuter St location has obliged us before in that regard. My husband had the jerk chicken and he enjoyed that as well. 2 pieces of chicken came with rice and peas and coleslaw. I think you can choose boiled dumplings instead of the rice. He said he would have liked the chicken to be a little spicier, but he was happy with it and would order it again. Also on the menu was stew beef (which the Shuter St location does really well), stew chicken, ackee and saltfish, fried or BBQ chicken, fried fish, oxtail, curry chicken, curry goat, and variety of roti's. They also have all your typical sides (dumplings, festival, plaintain, callaloo). Pretty much all the standard West Indian favorites. We ate in, but they do take out as well. The service was pleasant also. We will certainly be back! It's within walking distance from home which is a bonus for us. Apparently they deliver as well...

there must be one good restaurant in Niagara Falls!?

The last time I was in Niagara Falls, we ate dinner at a lovely restaurant called AG. It's located in the Sterling Inn and Spa, where we were staying. I really don't like Niagara Falls and prefer to stay in Niagara on the Lake. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant was fantastic. We were there during the summer, but I can still rememeber what I ate. A goat cheese and mushroom tart to start. Fabulous. The pastry was perfect, light and flaky without being greasy. Entree was a crusted beef tenderloin - done perfectly. For dessert I had a chocolate torte with poached pears. My husband also enjoyed his meal. Service was great also. It is pricier than the chain restaurants, but well worth it if you are looking for something more upscale. I would definately eat there again.

40-50 people for Sunday lunch (downtown) - Church/Front area. Any recs?

in the same area/section of the restaurant if possible. A friend just suggested Ivory Thailand's buffet. Any thoughts on this?

40-50 people for Sunday lunch (downtown) - Church/Front area. Any recs?

I need some help. I'm looking for a restaurant to take a large group (family and friends) out for lunch on a Sunday after church. Buffet style might be easiest so everyone can get in and out in a reasonable time. We would like to do it for $20 or less per person if possible (not including alcohol). We will be at St. James catherdral on Front street, so something within walking distance from there would be great.

Thanks for your suggestions!

The "What's good in Peel" thread.. (BRAMPTON/MISSISSAUGA Only please) :^)

My favorite Jerk chicken/ pork spot in Brampton is Portland Jerk. Fantastic. A must try!

new mom desperately seeking Chinese or Thai that delivers to Yonge+ Queen Quay

Happy Sunday everyone,

I'm realizing just how difficult it is to take care of yourself while taking care of a newborn! Could anyone recommend good Chinese or Thai food that would deliver to my area for those nights I don't have the time or energy to cook?

Much appreciated!

Non-Tourist Lunch near Princess of Wales Theatre?

Fune is on Simcoe. I've always enjoyed their sushi, although haven't been in awhile.

RAAW or Sushi District?

I was hoping to try a new Japanese restaurant tomorrow night and heard about these two places. Would love to hear opinions on each if anyone's been.

Thanks!

ISO: Good burgers and fries

There was a review of a few burger restaurants in the Star this morning. I was wondering if anyone has tried the place that got the best review...Oh Boy Burger on Queen West.

Eating London?

I used to live in London, and when I was last there (a year ago) Thaifoon was quite good for Thai food. Barakat is a must for shawarma's and falafels. I still think their sandwiches beat the hell out of anything i've had in Toronto (although my SO disagrees). I agree with the other recs for sushi. Black trumpet is probably the best in terms of fine dining/ambiance and was a fave for corporate functions, romantic/ special occasion dinners. That being said, i've always heard good things about Michael on the Thames but never managed to make it there. On Richmond Row, Garlic's I never did like. Always found it was overrated. I did like the Tasting Room, but always found it loud. Enjoyed the food though. There was a fantastic Vietnamese place on Dundas (I believe) it was across the street from the Kellogg's factory. I think it was called Viet Nam Restaurant. Wonderful food, friendly service and dirt cheap. Never disappointed there.

Any faves around Yonge and Lawrence?

Thanks for your recs! We ended up at Trio and had a great meal. It was pretty busy and we didn't have reservations, but we ended up with a great table by the window anyway. We all had pasta dishes and were very hapy with everything. The pizzas we saw looked great. Will definately be back to try one!

Any faves around Yonge and Lawrence?

I'm meeting some good friends in this neighbourhood tonight. Any recs on a restaurant close by? More on the casual side as opposed to upscale dining.

Thanks!
