Pork Breast?

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes it is boneless and, unfortunately, there's no skin..or very much fat for that matter.

Pork Breast?

Hi everyone! It's been a long time!

Our good friend works in a meat market and brought my husband and I some porky gifts. One of them was a "pork breast" (see picture below). I've never seen such a thing and a quick google search didn't result in much info.

Does anyone have any experience with this cut of pork? Suggestions welcome!

What's For Easter Dinner?

Sorry for the delay - just saw this. It's basically a brown sugar/molasses glaze but it's delicious. Here's a link:

Need THE BEST Ciappino recipe for Christmas Eve

Here's my recipe. I use it almost every year in place of the actual Feast of the Seven Fishes. It's so delicious and beautiful.

Green or ripe plantain uses

My favorite Puerto Rican dish uses ripe plantains - pastelon. It's a casserole with picadillo (ground beef flavored with sazon, tomato sauce and olives), topped with sliced ripe plantains and cheese. So stinkin' good.

ISO Cut out Christmas Cookie Recipes: Plain and Chocolate

I just made a fantastic cookie yesterday. It's an almond sugar cookie, here's the recipe:

http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2008/04...

Super easy to make and roll out with no resting time needed. I only rolled and cut half the dough - the rest is in the freezer. I made a royal icing and decorated some cookies in the shape of my home state of Connecticut. I need to work on my decorating skills but it is very tasty.

Caesar Salad Dressing.

Since I usually don't keep anchovies on hand all the time, I actually use fish sauce! Tastes great and I always have a bottle.

Christmas appetizer suggestion, please

First thought was a hummus platter. Roasted red pepper hummus is good...serve it with fresh vegetables and pita. I think that fits the bill pretty well :)

Main Dish Ideas needed for Oyster Roast

So, I'm attending an oyster roast on Saturday and I've been asked to bring an entree for those that don't eat oysters. I'm drawing blanks probably because I'm focused on eating close to my body weight in oysters...ha! I would like something cheap(ish) and fairly simple. Ideally it should also hold up well on a buffet table for a few hours. I'm open to any ideas. Many thanks :)

looking for great bread in Hampton Roads

Honestly, the best bread I've had in the area was served at Stove in Portsmouth. The bread here sucks..my husband and I go around the market squeezing the bread trying to get a nice crusty loaf. The best loaf of bread I've purchased here was at Bella Italia in VB (also one in Norfolk, but not sure they sell bread from there). Huge loaf of hard, crusty, chewy bread that you could break a tooth on for under $2 or $3.

Help with sweet yeast dough

Don't they? I'm making some minor changes including adding a little raspberry jam on top of the almond filling. I think I'll try your method. So it will have to come to room temp and then let it rise for the second time, correct?

Help with sweet yeast dough

It's been ages since I posted on Chow, good to be back :) Anyway, here's my dilemma - I want to make this almond ring:

http://www.simplysifted.com/2010/05/1...

The recipe makes 2 cakes. I want to make one cake for today and make another cake for tomorrow (the recipe says that it starts to get stale on the 2nd day, hence not making both today). The recipe says that the cake can be frozen for later use, but I was wondering if I could just refrigerate the dough instead...bring it back to room temp, roll it out, fill it etc. Do you think that would ruin dough?

Ideas? Suggestions?

BBQ Near Norfork/Virginia Beach?

My favorite BBQ is Malbon Bros in Virginia Beach. It's actually located in a gas station, but you can sit inside and have some great bbq.

What's For Easter Dinner?

Just 2 of us for Easter supper this year. Luckily my employer gave me a beautiful spiral ham at xmas that I froze. I'll make that and add in my own crunchy ham glaze along with potatoes au gratin and steamed asparagus - nothing over the top but good! Dessert will be carrot cake cupcakes.

Corned Beef Test Results.....Slow Baked and a Braise, For St. Paddy's Day.

I did the braised/baked method tonight for dinner - DELICIOUS! I will never boil it again!

I soaked the corned beef for 24 hours, changing the water every 3 hours. I then braised it in a mixture of beer (all I had was hefeweizen) and water with a small spoonful of beef base and pickling spice. I braised it for 4 hours on 325, drained the liquid (saved for boiling carrots and potatoes) and baked for another 2 hours. It was crispy on the outside and it fell apart when I cut it...for me, it was the best of both worlds.

Thank you so much for this alternative!!

Spices in Tidewater

Second this. I love Penzys. If I need something last minute though, I like Fresh Market..they have little baggies of spices that are always fresh.

Norfolk/Virginia Beach Restaurant Week.... where did you go?

My husband and I reluctantly joined a group of friends at the Melting Pot. I hate that place..too much money to cook your own food.

Doubling Kristen King's Almond Squares

Hey Everyone! I'm still so happy to hear that everyone likes my recipe as much as I do :) This recipe is easily double and yes, a 9x13" pan is best. And like Buttertart said, it will take some extra time.

Enjoy and let me know if you have any other questions or adaptations that I can try (like Katty's bitter almond)!

Appetizer Meatballs?

I'm attending a pot luck dinner on Saturday and I was told to bring an appetizer meatball. I've never been a fan of Swedish meatballs etc., but I'm willing to make some if there isn't something better, something different, out there in the way of appetizer meatballs. Any kind of different tasty recipes are welcome. Many thanks!
