costco stores sell liquor in maryland?
Will the new Costco in Mont. Co. even sell beer and wine? Trader Joe's does not, as they won't deal with County bureacracy, which has a monopoly on those products.
Fiola and Elisir - Lunch vs. Dinner - any experiences?
And remember the OEG and Clyde's on 7th Street, NW have a very tood deal at the bar Monday - Thursday, 3 - 6 PM: 1/2 half price raw bar (oysters, clams, shrimp). Many of us think the Cyde's Group has the best oysters in town . On any given day they usually have 5 or 6 varieties. And you don't actually have to sit at the bar itself, it you try to avoid stools, as I do. The bar area (esp. on 7th Street) has plenty of regular booths.
Smoked Turkey
This does not respond directly to your question, but a guy in our office earlier this week brought in an absolutely wondierful smoked turkey from Greenberg Smoked Turkeys in Tyler, TX. Of course, they ship; however, I imagine someone in the DC area has them more readily available.
Looking for a nice resturant to celebrate our anniversary that offers good mid week deal
1789 in Georgetown used to have a very good deal during the summer (3 courses; $40 or so, without wine). It might be worth checking into.
Boiled Peanuts
You can do them yourselves without too much trouble. Just get yourself a bunch of raw peanuts, add a ton of salt, then add more salt. Boil gently for several hours, until done to your specifications. Nothing like 'em straight off your own stove. (They're good cold, too.)
Rivers at the Watergate??
We ate there the week it opened a couple of months ago. At that time it was pretty good, especially since they were still getting things underway. A standard American, middle of the road menu -- it's manager is a long time alum of the Prime Rib. We took guests, and they enjoyed it. It is without question (or at least in my opinion) a significant improvement over the past two places located in that space (600? Dominique's?). We'd go again if we were going to a show at the KC.

Scandanavian or Indonesian in the DC/Baltimore area?
Anyone know of any Scandanavian or Indonesian restaurants in the DC/Balto area?
"Zing-Zang" Bloody Mary Mix -- Where in NOVA?
When I checked on this very question earlier this year, I was told by the company HQ that the only store around here who carries it is Paul's on Wisconsin Avenue, NW, in Friendship Heights. They had it the first time I went in but not the second.
Dining in or Near Eastland, TX
We will be in Eastland the weekend following next and were wondering if anyone could recommend any BBQ, TexMex, chicken fried steak, diner, or any other places to eat.
Our relatives live there, and I am not expecting much. But any tips would be much appreciated. (I know, I know: we could get back in the car and drive back to Forth Worth.)
Thanks.

Senor Peppers, Conn Ave?
Has anyone been this place at the corner of Connecticut and Livingston, NW? It replaced the old Lomita Dos.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.
Local Boiled Peanuts, NOVA?
I always buy my raw peanuts via mail order. There are a bunch of places on the Internet you can choose from. One thing I have found is that there are also a bunch of recipes out there that vary considerably in suggested cooking times and amounts of salt to add. My recipe cook (simmering after they have come to a boil) them for several hours at least -- until they reach the consistency you prefer. (I like them pretty mushy.) As to salt, out in way more than you think will be needed, and then double that. (Of course, you may not like yours salty, but I think that's one of their charms.)
Rehoboth Beach in February?
Rehoboth Beach in February?
Heading there tomorrow. I haven't been there in many, many years.
Any hints on someplace good, any type of cuisine, that's open off-season?
Not necessarily looking for "fine dining" -- just tasty.
We do very much enjoy French, Italian, and seafood.
Thanks.
Opinions wanted! Places to go in Rockville
I had lunch at Bobby's Crabcakes two or three weeks ago and thought it was very good, particularly since is the "crab season" in this area. Bear in mind that it's small and has few tables. There are counter seats with stools along a couple of the walls. Also, it's very informal, if that mattters: You order up front and your food is brought to you when it's ready.
First Time in Boston MUST EATs Local Favs
This is so helpful.
A related question ... We are going to be in Boston in two weeks. We will mostly be doing "chowhoundly" things, but friends have suggested that, for a "big deal" experience we try Locke Ober. It's only 3 blocks from our hotel and gets top reviews. Is it worth the $$$? Thanks. GregJ/Wash DC
all you can drink mimosa/bloody mary brunches?
Sign of the Whale on M Street between 18th and 19th ... Used to have a do it yourself Bloody Mary bar. Don't know if they still do (or even they are still there).

Sushi Ko - Chevy Chase
The entrance looks out on the Giant parking lot; I don't know if it has a "Wisconsin Circle" address or not. Businesses that do have that address include Potomac Pizza and a Montgomery County liquor storeg.
Fancy birthday dinner - Baltimore
Haven't been in two years or so, but based on my last experience I'd suggest Charleston. It was quite wonderful.
Decent brunch buffet
Well, the one at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown on Sunday is quite fantastic and varied (inclusive of a bloodly Mary and complementary champagne). It's also quite expensive (at least when we went last January): $75 pp before tax and tip. To the extent that any brunch buffet is worth this kind of money (and I should add it's in their lovely dining room overlooking Rock Creek Park), this one is. GregJ
Hook
Went to Hook for the first time this past Saturday with three other people. We got a variety ot apps and entrees and unjoyed them all very much. (As some have pointed out, the serving sizes are somewhat smaller than at other places, but for us that is a good thing: we had room for desert and therefore were able to share a quite nice cheese place (and served at close to room temperature!. Our service was professional and friendly.
PESTO on Connecticut Ave, NW?
Anyone ever tried this place? It's been there awhile, but I don't recall any reviews.
It was Mrs. Simpson's for a long time and is at the corner of Connecticut and Cathedral, near to zoo.

Oddest DC Cuisine
You might say that haggis fits your criteria. It can be had at the Royal Mile in Wheaton. I haven't had it there, but I assume it is not prepared in the traditional Scottish manner (i.e., cooked in a sheep's stomach).

Restaurant Advice - Union Station area
For seafood, Jonny's Half Shell is an easy walk. I've only been for lunch but thought it was quite good.
Thanksgiving Dinner "out": L'Auberge Chez Francois
Another Auberge memory: My wife is one of six children. Back in the seventies each kid was permitted, on his or her birthday, to go, alone, with the parents to a restaurant of the child's choosing. The idea was to give each child at least one "special" day per year. My wife invariably chose Chez Francois. Her memory, though, was that it was located on "lower" Connecticut Avenue (between Farragut Square and Laffayette Park.
I concur, though, in what appears to be the consensus in this thread: a fine place to go, especially on a Sunday afternoon in the Spring or Summer. The food is good, not great. But the overall experience, particularly in a large family group, is usually quite wonderful.
Pacific Restaurant in Sterling, VA?
My Mother, who lives in Loudon County, has heard this is a good place to go.
Can anyone verifty that? Also, in looking at their menus on line, see that their offerings are quite extensive. Do they have any particular strenghts and/or weaknesses?
Thank.

Jiraffe? Josie's?
We will be in Santa Monica (coming from DC) for three nights later this month. We have plans for the first two nights. In previous visits there I've seen JiRaffe and have been tempted to go. It used to be listed in the LA Magazine restaurant guide but seems to have been dropped at some point. Is it still good? Alternatively we were thinking of Josie's, which used to get raves on this board. Is it still good? We're staying at 2nd and Wilshire, without a car, so Josie would require a taxi.
Thanks for any and all advice.
Greg J/Washington, DC
Purcellville, VA / Harper's Ferry, WV
Not sure how far it is from Purcellville, but we've always had good luck with Fleur de Lis in Lovettsville, VA. It's run by an alum of Auberge Chez Francois. We enjoy driving out from DC once or twice per year for some very nice food and service.

Restaurants in Middleburg, VA
We're heading out to a B and B in a couple of weeks in Middleburg. We're looking a nice place for a special dinner. Cusine type and cost are not important. We're just looking for good food and good service. Thanks. GregJ
French restaurants in Washington D.C.
Also Marcel has opened a more casual bisto-type place, Becks, at approximately 11th or 12th and K, NW. It's gotten very good reviews so far and is apparently very proud its beer lineup (esp. Belgian). (Haven't been yet but understand the food is more Belgian than French.)
French restaurants in Washington D.C.
We ate at La Chaumiere in January and enjoyed ourselves. Prices are quite moderate.
Also, Cafe du Parc in the Willared Hotel (approx 14th and Penn, NW) has been getting very favorable reviews on the Don Rockwell site. Haven't been there yet myself but plan to go next week. Also very reaonable prices (judging from the menu posted on their website)
