Kinton Ramen - First Taste
I don't know, but if you are looking for a good veggie ramen, I really like the one at Kenzo. They have a veggie broth and all veggie stuff with the noodles.
If you are invited over to friends' home for dinner...
I also would never come empty handed (british upbringing) and appreciate when people offer to bring something. If they offer I usually ask them to bring a dessert, because then they are happy and it really is a help. Or if I have a specific dessert in mind already I will ask them to bring a treat for the kids, and again they are happy because they don't have to wonder about what to bring. My theory is that people who ask to bring something really want to. Sometimes people do come empty handed and it makes me wonder. If a host/hostess insists on me not bringing anything then I will bring wine and not expect it to be served that night.
passover order
We have ordered from here before: http://www.beby.org/our_caterer.html
and been really happy with it. The food was good and I felt the prices were reasonable.
Avenue & Lawrence update.
The tim hortons/coldstone creamery has the sign up and looks almost ready to open. Coldstone will be a good addition to the neighbourhood and I think the tims will be busy also. there is a building permit in the window of the old cibc at dunblaine and avenue but i don't know what it says. The mr sub that closed is becoming a juice or smoothy place.
How to make veggie dip thicker?
Its about 2 cups of dip, how much cream cheese would you suggest?
How to make veggie dip thicker?
I made my own veggie dip using a recipe, but substituted plain yogurt for sour cream. It tastes good but is runny. How can I make it thicker?
Thanks!
Avenue & Lawrence update.
REALLY????? Did you get it from a good source, before I get too excited?
Avenue & Lawrence update.
Why do you think it is a tim horton's? No sign that I can see.... Bombay hut is where Mela used to be an I wonder if it is the same owners.
Sukkahs in the GTA?
Yes all of those places will be closed, Baycrest will be open obviously but not sure what they serve in the cafeteria. Try the restaurants on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.
Mac & Cheese Take-out Downtown? Ideally in the Financial District?
Honestly I wouldn't go to too much trouble, and definitely don't buy anything fancy. Maxim is good, but you could also buy a box of kd and be done with it.
What's the best French restaurant or bistro in midtown right now?
No, but you could if you want to.

Elle m'a dit is exactly that. Have you tried it?
Teaching children to behave at restaurants
I've found the key is to take them to resturants but go early when its not busy and when the service is faster. Its just something that takes practice like anything else, and they will learn from doing.
Ground Beef
I inquired about this on another thread but am hoping for more response posting it separately. I have been reading a lot of bad things about non-kosher ground beef where the producers are using trimmings that were previously inedible and washing them in an ammonia solution before grinding them. Is there something about kosher ground beef that would prohibit this practice?
Here's an example

Why do we stand for it?
Its ammonia. Here's an example http://uk.ibtimes.com/articles/20110416/jamie-oliver-wants-know-why-pink-slime-part-your-child-039healthy-school-lunch.htm

I am curious also about kosher ground beef, I have been reading a lot of bad things about non-kosher ground beef where the producers are using trimmings that were previously inedible and washing them in a bleach solution before grinding them. Is there something about kosher ground beef that would prohibit this practice?
Avenue & Lawrence update.
There's something new, its called Cafe St. Germain. On the east side of avenue road just north of st. germain. Not sure what they are serving but it looks cute from the outside.

Elle m'a dit on Baldwin street. Its fantastic. Make reservations becuase it is very small!
Kosher Caterer or Restaurant with delivery
Hmmm. If they are strictly kosher then they are probably familiar with what's out there. For meat I suggest the chicken nest, they may deliver for a large order. They are not fancy but the food is good. Or you could order from Hartmans, I think that would be ok too.
Why do we stand for it?
No its not. In a crappy restaurant maybe, but certainly not anywhere half decent. The fact that you think this is exactly the point of the discussion, that we don't believe we can do better.
There are a significant number of people in my community who didn't grow up frum and began to keep strictly kosher later in life. I often wonder why those people don't speak up about how awful the kosher restaurants are compared to the decent non kosher ones and use their experience to push for higher standards. No one, that I know of, would ever eat at any of the kosher restaurants here unless they were strictly kosher or dining with someone who is, because all of the options are really unappealing when you have other choices.
Best Cupcakes in Toronto?
Yes and they are moving a bit more north on avenue road. Their cupcakes are terrific.
Hartmans Meats
No I wouldn't say that. But I would say that I expect to see them offer the same as they do elsewhere. If it were a brand new concept I would agree with you.
Hartmans Meats
Hartmans is not new, I would expect this store to have the same offerings as their other one. Not sure what you were expecting but prepared foods are what they do. Will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
Review: The Copper Chimney 2050 Avenue Road, Toronto, M5M 4A6 416-850-9772
Yes. I found their dishes extremely spicy before, and so have been asking for my order to be mild, and it was still very spicy. This time I asked for mild and it was completely mild, so I don't think I will ask for it that way again. Food is still great I think.
Avenue & Lawrence update.
The Baka website says they are closed today and tomorrow, do you know for sure they are closed permanently? I am not sure about Vault either, a couple of times they looked closed but were actually open, they have a blind which they pull over the front door which makes it look papered over, but it is just to keep the sun out.

Open Window Bakery closing?
The location at Bathurst and Wilson is opening "soon" as My Zayde's bakery. So, yes, I do think your thinking is wishful. Sorry.
5 hour Layover- Where to eat!!???
Sadly I have to agree with this post, if you have to get your bags there is no point, you risk missing your connection if you leave the airport. And please don't judge Toronto by the airport chaos, it does get better!
Best case scenario, one hour to clear Candian customs, get your bags and get in a cab. Then you need to be back at least 2 hrs before your next flight (a friend arrived 1.5 hrs before a flight to the US yesterday and missed the plane due to the long customs line). So that would leave you 2 hrs to travel to a restaurant and eat and travel back. To go downtown from the airport is 45 minutes by the time you park etc, and that is with no traffic.
Sorry to disappoint, next time do a layover here, there is lots to see and eat!
