Chowfind: Scharffen Berger chocolate at Dollarama
I just checked Woodside Mall (McCowan & Finch) Dollarama this afternoon and they still have the 41% Milk as well as the others.

They're actually 85g bars, not 100g. Still, a bargain at a buck, IMO. The 41% have a b/b date of June/2009 and the 70% have a b/b date of July/2009 and they both taste alright to me. You have to do your own calcs to figure out how much you should buy if you don't plan on overindulging and finishing them off before those dates.

Yes, I agree the chocolates are high in fat so I wouldn't recommend eating more than 1/8 bar or around 10g if you're on a diet. Still, there are health benefits to high cocao chocolate but only for the 70%+ ones assuming you can take the taste.

Just a correction. The 16 pages long forum was actually on Redflagdeals NOT the Montreal Chowhound board. My apologies.

A similar thread has been up on the Montreal board for a few weeks already -- methinks they're already up to 16 pages long!
Anyways, I picked some up last weekend at the STC Dollarama (although they didn't have any more of the 41% Milk) and at the Woodside (Finch & McCowan) Dollarama where they still had all 4 kinds (41%, 62%, 70%, and 82%).
The bitterness is an acquired taste. I used to like the high-sugar/hydro-veg-oil Cadbury and Rowntree chocs but have come to find these high cocao chocs more satisfying. If you haven't tried a high cocao bar before I'd suggest you try the 41% milk first!
Anyways, a great buy at a buck. Shoppers is charging close to $5 a bar. Wow. BTW, their stock did pretty well today... on the back of chocolate lovers??!
Scharffen Berger at Dollarama?!
Amazingly there's no such thread on the Chowhound Toronto section (granted, most Toronto chocolate fans have been posting on Redflagdeals instead). Anyhow, I've been doing my part reducing the inventory at nearby Dollaramas here.
I have to admit I used to like the British Cadbury & Roundtree chocs but as I got older I found the more-cocao chocs a lot more satisfying than the high-sugar/hydro-veg-oil chocs.
A buck is definitely a good price. It's obscene what SDM (Shopper's Drug Mart ie. Pharmaprix) is charging.
Scharffen Berger at Dollarama?!
I tip my hat to you, sir!
No doubt, a "bigfellow"" with an even bigger heart!
I'm sure your gift will be much appreciated.
Scharffen Berger at Dollarama?!
Granted, your handle is "bigfellow" but considering the best before dates of June/July '09 and the fat and saturated fat content of these chocolate bars, you might consider giving some away -- to me for example! LOL.
New Chinese Strip mall on Taschereau
I heard there was tremendous resistance by the local grocers since T&T was known to have aggressive pricing policies. That's too bad. You could use the competition.
I find big price differences in fruit (during the winter), ice cream, vegetables between Montreal and Toronto grocers.
Chinese speaker needed
At 40+ I am just starting to learn how to read. It isn't easy but learning something that complements one's interest makes it easier.
Obviously, having a friend or someone who knows helping you is invaluable.
I am starting with bilingual menus and learning the characters and character pairs one or two at a time. Wish me luck.
Not suggesting this is the way to go but I noticed similar thread on the Toronto board and there were no easy solutions there either.
In the end, it's like any other language. We all start with zero knowledge and take it from there. At least you'll be motivated. The rewards of success can be extremely tasty!
Good luck!
Moh - "Wok Hai"
Moh, you've mentioned "Wok Hai" in many posts.
Is there anywhere you would recommend, particularly in Chinatown, that does(?) this well?
TIA

Restaurant Closures - 2008
That's usually how it goes. A restaurant being busy at a particular time (like Dim Sum) doesn't usually tell the whole story.
But getting back to the bigger picture, there is no doubt the economy will claim many more establishments as eating out is usually one of the first niceties to go during an economic downturn.
Any clue why chinese resto is called 'Amigo'?
I think most are familiar with the Chinese's love of the number 8 which rhymes with the Chinese word for fortune or luck.
I believe the number 6 sounds like the word for road or path so 1-6-8 becomes "One Lucky Path" or similar.
Any corrections welcome.

I think you've pretty much covered it, carswell. It is probably a combination of the reasons you've stated.
The "inside scoop" I initially heard was that the Lotte was supposed to move to the new Swatow complex down the street. It is possible the owner(s) decided to "start anew" with new backers and a new name. Granted, this is ALL speculation on my part.
P.S. Would you be the same carswell on the I.V. boards? If so, we have common passions!
REAL CHINESE RESTAURANTS IN MONTREAL?
My Chinatown favorites are Mon Shing and Beijing. Like all establishments it can be hit or miss on some days.
Mon Shing tends to offer a better value and Beijing's Salt & Pepper Squid is probably the best I've sampled (beating out anything I've tried in Toronto or New York).
Granted, these are mainly Cantonese-style restaurants so if you're looking for Szechuan or other, you'd best check out other reviews.
P.S. On some days you might catch local celeb Mitsumi Takahashi of CTV lunching at Beijing....
Authentic southern bbq in montreal
Went to the Downtown Bofinger last week and I must say I was quite disappointed. Yes, fries and 'slaw weren't bad but I thought the ribs were A TOTAL RIP-OFF. Given the thickness of the bones there was hardly any meat available. On top of that, cook-counter boy counted a pair of "Y-shaped" ribs as 4 ribs, not two (after all, there's no meat in between the two bones of a Y-shaped rib). Sadly, I ordered it eat-out and didn't notice this until later.
Best part of the meal was the vegetables that I made myself chez-moi.
A real disappointment given the prices they charge.
Guess it's back up the 401 for some Swiss Chalet ribs for me....
