Dress Code for PDC and Vallier?

Thank you both!

Dress Code for PDC and Vallier?

Hi all, my girlfriend and I are coming the weekend of Oct 9 for a long weekend, and I have reservations at PDC for Sat. dinner and Vallier for Sunday brunch. Is there a dress code at either of these places? These are the only "definites" as far as meals go; I assume we'll stumble across some great places during the day for lunch, snacks. Staying in Old Port at the Nelligan. Thanks.

the single guy in fort greene - hot tips on take-out?

for pizza and simple pasta, I like Graziella's on Vanderbilt (DeKalb). Welcome to the 'hood.

Moderate Priced Sea Food Restaurant

Have you tried f.i.s.h. in port chester?

Lucali's still great...

someone mentioned a short time ago that Lucali's doesn't do take out. Is this true?

Di Fara open on Labor Day?

I would assume he's closed. I was there on Friday, and he mentioned that his "closed on Mondays" policy would probably be permanent.

The U.S. Open...anything good to eat there?

I thought fans were prohibited from bringing food in. Has this changed?

River Cafe, Brooklyn...any opinions?!

Absolutely, yes. Go and enjoy. River Cafe is a wonderful all-around experience.

DiFara Pizza

Believe me, this will NOT be a regular occurrence! My mom was so impressed by DiFara's, howvere, that she MADE me take 3 slices to our relatives. They're coming up to visit in a few weeks, so they'll be able to experience fresh DiFara's.

I totally agree that CHers should explore their neighborhoods for good (if not great) food -- that's the only way we expand this board. I love DiFara's, but in my neighborhood of Ft. Greene I'm also quite happy with Graziella's. I don't know where the OP lives, but Cassie's in Englewood (Dean and Palisades Ave) is pretty good.

DiFara Pizza

Based on the reactions of my family members, I'd have to disagree. I bought a round pie from DiFara's on a Friday night and took it to my elderly mother, who lives in northern Jersey. Even though she's not a pizza lover, she took 2 bites, said "this is the best pizza I've ever had," and promptly helped herself to 2 slices. We then took the remaining few slices down to Maryland the next day, visiting some relatives. Even though the slices had lost their wonderful crispness of crust, my relatives are hooked on DiFara's.

Jersey has some fine pizza, and this is not to say that a DiFara's pizza is worth any hassle, but Dom is nonpareil.

Grocery or Saul?

I agree -- Saul. The food is inventive, and I find the atmosphere much more comfortable. Grocery always seems a little cramped.

Five Guys Burgers coming to Montague Street!

People seem to be criticizing 5 Guys for not being what it never meant to be -- a "gourmet" burger. It's just a friendly, casual place to get a quick, fast food burger that won't make you gag. Haven't been to the one here, but I've gone to the one in Prince George's Cty, MD quite a bit. If you take it on it's own terms, it does what it does very well. Is it Schnack, or Bonnie's, or DuMont? No, and it's not trying to be.

Hanyang Supermarkets

I believe there's also a Hanyang in Bergenfield, NJ, in Foster Village, if you live in Northern Jersey.

Is the Smoke Joint still closed for renovation?

Not sure what you're referring to. I walked by this past Wednesday on my way to 67 Burger and they were open.

BURGERS!!!

Have you tried 67 Burger (or Burger 67) in Ft. Greene? Not bad for a quick non-"gourmet" burger

best Brooklyn burger

If by "good," you mean "edible"...

Personally, I haven't yet tried the Dumont burger, but Cocotte's is quite good.

Po is open for business

Went on Sunday evening. The restaurant was full, but it did not feel "packed"; decent spacing between the tables. The music was, um, er, "interesting," and was definitle a topic of our discussion. Service was terrific -- for a new restaurant, I did not sense any hiccups or "first week jitters." The wine list, on the whole, is fairly moderate -- we had a nice sangiovese/montepulciano for around 30.

The food was good, but not transcendant -- I had the meatballs and the pasta special, which consisted of rigatoni with a fresh tomatoi base, olives, garlic, and thin strips of beef was tasty but again, not overwhelming. The meatballs might have been a bit heavy for the hot weather, but they tasted wonderful. My companion had the asparagus appetizer and a spaghetti dish that were both quite good. Dessert, the chocolate terrine, seemed to be an afterthought and was the weakest part of the meal.

All in all, a nice addition to the Smith St. pantheon, but it may take a while for it to break out of the crowd. Definitely worth trying, however and, as I said, the service was surprisingly good fresh out of the gate.

lobster rolls

If that's a "whole lobster," they're using tiny lobsters. The rolls are tasty, but WAY overpriced.

Shh! Quiet restaurants in Bklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens

I second the Queen recommendation. That's the one that first came to mind.

Brooklyn NY 'Hounder staying in River North area

I'm going to be visiting Chicago (first time) this weekend, staying in the "River North" area. We have reservations for 160 Blue, but are there any walk-in restaurants in the area that we shouldn't miss? Also, how "dressy" is 160 Blue? Thanks!

Taro Sushi. Believe the hype.

Decided to give it a try this evening. OMG! I had the deluxe sashimi. I have NEVER tasted fish so fresh, so velvet-y. I must have driven by this place 1000 times, never noticing it due to its hole-in-the-wall appearance. Don't be fooled; this place delivers the goods.

"before the arrival of FAIRWAY we were condemned to the hell of KEY FOOD, GRISTEDES, and the late d'AGOSTINO. "

Different strokes/folks, etc., but don't be harshin' on my 5th avenue Key Foods! You sound like you're much more of a chef than I ever will be, and so perhaps a good grocery store doesn't meet your needs, but for "basics plus", the 5th ave. Key Foods is more than adequate.

Pequena or Smoke Joint??

After harshing on Smoke Joint, I recently went back, and it seems their "inconsistencies" are a thing of the past. I'd gladly recommend them. (Don't think they have wine, only (good) beers). Don't know about Pequena.

I was just about to ask the same question. Glad I saw this thread; I'd never have been able to find it using the search function...

Franny's, I'm over it

I've never been a fan -- sure, the pizza's tasty, and I don't mind paying for quality and atmosphere, butI've never found the people working there to be particularly hospitable. The place has a downright "snotty" vibe to it that I have no patience for.

Spicy Ribs on Van Brunt St.

Are they open on weekends, or just during the week (probably the latter, if it caters to local workers)?

Best time to go to Di Fara's?

Decided to try it again after my initial 45 minute visit resulted only in 2 square slices. On my second visit, about an hour on a Wednesday evening around 4:45, had the less-than-competent son behind the counter and mayhem in front of the counter. (And the plain pie I got had a bit too much charring.) My third trip last week, on a Tuesday afternoon around 3, resulted in a delicious pie after only 20 minutes (the daughter was assisting that day). Definitely, the time of day and the person taking orders make a huge difference.

That's good to hear -- I'll try them again next week, but not a Sunday, as jen kalb suggests
