Cafe with good quality and unique salads - need to order for a crowd
I wanted to update you all with what I decided to do. I was on a very limited schedule and didn't have enough time to devote to making calls/arranging tastings. Luckily, I stopped in for a lunch bite at Pizza Motta, and on a whim decided to go with their catering service. It's not what I originally envisioned (maybe a little less sophisticated/unusual), but the guest of honor likes the food, as does the elderly lady whose house we are using for the shower. Plus, they allow very late ordering (or providing final numbers), which is good since a number of the guests have not yet rsvp'd (grrrr).
I have tentatively ordered a few salads (pasta with spinach and pesto, tomato bocconcini, roasted veggies, melon and prosciutto and a fruit salad), plus mini arancini, spinach and feta wrapped in filo. Will let you know how it all turns out!

I didn't end up contacting her. I will update in a general reply. Bummer that you never heard back.

Thanks, snowpea, I will check her out.

So you don't enjoy the food from there?

Miss Pret-a-manger looks like just the type of salads i am looking for - will check them out. I would love a few more options too, if anyone else has any ideas.
Cafe with good quality and unique salads - need to order for a crowd
I'm throwing a baby shower for a friend with around 25 guests. It will be in May, so I don't want to serve anything too heavy. I would love to provide some light and unique salads, along with some fruit, cheese and baguette. Where in Montreal can I order large platters of fresh salads? I'm thinking of something along the lines of the salads they serve at Navarino, in Mile End, except I think there must be better out there. I am thinking specifically of things like pasta salad, unusual cole slaws, twists on tomato bocconcini, etc., with very good quality ingredients - not standard lettuce salads. I hope I am getting my question across!
If you have any favorite cafes/bakeries, share the name, I can always call them myself to see if they would allow me to order ahead.
Thanks!

BEST DINING SPOTS IN VERDUN
Agree about Pho Bac No 1, their Pho is actually my least favorite thing on the menu. They do have some good dishes - the green papaya salad is very, very good and so is their beef vermicelli with lemongrass.
Also second the Mexican place on wellington, I did not enjoy it at all.
Just ordered from Mademoiselle Coco's last night. It's my only experience there, but for what it is we really enjoyed it, and it was a great value. It's basically tasty but non-authentic Chinese. Some things stood out; first the food came in like 15 minutes (delivered) which we were happy about because we were starved! Second, the veggies in all the dishes seemed fresh and good quality. Beef was nice and tender too.

I don't like it as much as Fu Yuan Xiang on Wellington but no one answered their phone, so Mademoiselle Coco's worked in a pinch!
I also quite like Luciano's on Verdun ave near first ave. It's a BYOB Italian place. I like their caesar salad and all the sauces I have tried have been so tasty. The "grumpy" waiter is actually a nice guy who likes to tease his customers.

Su is great. The little plates add up, but it is worth every penny. Their meat ravioli (not sure what it is called) is delicious and has a very unique flavor.
Long shot - wedding cakes in Hatley, Magog, Sherbrooke
I know there are not many people from the Eastern Townships on Chowhound, but I am looking for a place that makes delicious and beautiful wedding cakes in any of the areas mentioned above or within a reasonable distance. If anyone has a suggestion it would be very appreciated!
Good places in Verdun?
Yes, I went there and yes it is a pretty place with nice employees. I didn't enjoy my sandwich, because the one I chose had a very salty cheese (can't remember which one it was) and they included a huge hunk of it. So it overpowered all the other flavours in the sandwich, by a lot. My bf liked his meal better. I didn't much enjoy the tiny side salad that came with it either, too much mayo.
I think they also do a brunch as well.
First Visit 5000 Ans Korean
Which one did you go to? There are a number of different branches. I loved the one on St. Denis near Sherbrooke when I lived in the neighborhood.
Good places in Verdun?
Good point. I believe it was about $45 for two, excluding tip and with no alcoholic beverages. Not super expensive but since I left most on the plate, disappointing. About 1.5 times the prices of Coin du Mexique.
Good places in Verdun?
Hahaha ok, just because I didn't like the place when I went doesn't mean I was comparing it to Carlos and Pepes. That's a pretty rude comment. and makes false assumptions about my level of experience with Mexican food. The servings were huge for us too, but we left most of it on the plate because of the all-pervasive bitterness, also because they forgot to bring our soup and brought it with the entrees.
I am, however, very happy you liked it because I want new restaurants in Verdun to succeed. People should give it a try and share their opinion. Maybe my experience was a fluke, you never know.

Looking for a Farmer's Market this weekend in the Eastern Townships
I know there's one on School street in North Hatley on Saturdays. That's not too far from Magog and it's a very pretty town to visit. I've never been to the market though (missed it by one weekend in mid-June). Ayer's Cliff has one too, the same day.

I second your recommendation for Casa Manolo, it is really good, the only little complaint I have was that I found their appetizers very pricey. Stick to the mains they are a great value (I didn't try to squid though, that might be worth it!). Su is AMAZING I loved my meal there...and the owner or head waiter (the guy who greets you at the door) was just lovely and brought us a drink while we waited for a table, even though we had no reservation....it was packed! I also recommend Resto Delicieux at 4830 Verdun. It's a hole-in-the wall for sure but he does a fantastic poutine and with a little notice can make up all kinds of curry and other special dishes for you. Also I enjoy very much Restaurant Fu Yuan at 4434 Wellington. Very nice Chinese food and sweet owners as well.

Good places in Verdun?
Is this the new place that opened up about a month ago? I actually had a pretty poor meal there the other day. All the food had a super bitter taste, and it was really expensive for mexican. I'll drive across the city to Coin du Mexique before I will go there again.
Michel Groleau, Caterer
I'm getting married next year and think I have found my venue. It's a vineyard in the Eastern Townships. They work with a caterer named Michel Groleau. He's located in Bromont and does catering in the area. (http://www.michelgroleautraiteur.com/)
Before committing to the venue, I want to do my homework. Has anyone tried his food or worked with him on an event? If so, how did it go? I was unable to find anything about him on the web (except a voluntary recall of some of his food products in 2008, gasp!). Of course I will ask to try his food and for some references but I would love some unbiased info if possible.
opinion on caterers for wedding reception
Hi Snowpea, where did you hold your wedding reception?
I'm getting married too, and am watching this board with interest!
Petit Alep wait time.
Probably from 20-40 minutes in my experience. They'll serve you wine while you wait though!
La Maison du Nord pork sandwich
I'm still 99% sure that it was sichuan pepper in the dish I had, despite SnackHappy's assertion to the contrary. As well, I saved some for my boyfriend to try and he too found it inedible, so it wasn't just a quirk of my taste buds. I saw him grind up the peppers and there were a ton, so they permeated every bite of the dish.
La Maison du Nord pork sandwich
Hm, what else could cause such a flavour do you think? It definately wasn't chilli, what I am talking about is not heat per se but a numbing, medicinal flavour.
I am a spice lover normally, can handle extremely spicy food, so this is unusual.
La Maison du Nord pork sandwich
I just went to get some noodles at La Maison du Nord. I ended up with the spicy beef noodles...I love the aroma, texture, initial flavour, etc...but I literally can't eat them! I think there are a ton of ground up szechuan peppercorns in it, (I saw the cook grinding them up) and the after effects, even after a couple of bites, are just too strong. I'm getting a strong medicinal flavor from it, probably due to my inexperienced palate with this flavour. I've cooked with them before but kept them whole so I could eat around them. I'm so disappointed - I have to throw it away! Anyone have this experience? I don't want to scare people off because I can tell it would be amazing without the peppercorns, but be careful ordering the food spicy!
Business Lunch in Pointe Saint Charles/Atwater Market Area
Thanks to you both for these suggestions. I will consider both places for sure.
Business Lunch in Pointe Saint Charles/Atwater Market Area
Help! I have to meet a client for lunch in this area. I would like food that is not too too heavy, or at least a place with a few light options. Open to different types of cuisines as long as the food is good!
Happening Gourmand 2010
I'm going on Sunday, but I guess being that it will be the last night, a report on that will be of little help for you! The menu doesn't look all that inspiring but it is for a friend's birthday so I decided to go.
Happening Gourmand 2010
Yeah what is WITH that DJ? He annoyed me when I went there, on what would have been a great night out.
Nice bar for my parents on st. Laurent/St Denis
Yeah, that might be the case. They have a couple of less expensive items on the menu though, olives and arancini. Else's is the same, by the way (someone else mentioned it).
