Alternative Nacho Recipies

very down market....but I love equal parts canned green enchilada sauce to a meltable cheese food. Either velveeta or american. Top with sour crean and diced raw white onion. Put on your "fat" pants.

Dressing up a spaghetti dinner for a holiday party

I first learned to eat it with a spoon in Rome. At a locals mostly spot, not a tourist trap.

Suggestions/recipes using LOTS of bread?

Creamed chipped beef on toast. Ground beef in gravy on toast. Tomatoes Provencal (Ina Garten recipe) but that does turn them into breadcrumbs first. Summer pudding using winter fruit. Sausage stuffing using large cubes. Fluffer Nutters

ISO almond baked goods recipes

Not really a "baked good," but a favorite almond dessert. Almond Cannoli Pie. Crust is graham cracker with toasted almonds blended in. Filling is ricotta cheese, chocolate chips, almond extract, sugar and toasted almond slivers. Chill for one hour.

Dressing up a spaghetti dinner for a holiday party

When making spaghetti for company (mostly my 20 something adult nephews and nieces) I serve the meatballs in sauce as a dish. And rigatoni alfredo to serve along with it. Usually a simple salad and garlic bread complete the meal. I don't know whether it constitues "dressing up" the dinner, but it is always well received.

SURVEY: When/Where/How did you learn to cook?

I learned to cook a few of my favorite dishes from my mother. But she died when I was 23 before I really cared about cooking.

I had no required classes at school in the 80s in Los Angeles.

I think watching Rachel Ray put me at ease in the kitchen. I know she gets a lot of criticism, but she made cooking seem easy, and I am greatful to her. I have branched out to more complicated preparations, but still enjoy her style on a day to day basis.

As an adult I have taken cooking classes in Los Angeles, and on vacation in Mexico City.

Unintentional consequences from being a Chowhound..........

I've had a similar consequence. Not fast food, but supermarket garbage that I love. I've made more frito pies, underwood deviled ham sandwiches and rotel queso dip in the past few years than in the previous 10 before chowhound.

Mobile device use by guests . . .

A holiday meal where I'm given rules that do not reflect the era I am not trusted to distinguish between excusing myself from the table to answer a specific need and playing Angry Birds while the turkey is being carved, and I am expected to learn from my older generation about proper behavior seems like just what Norman Rockwell had in mind for the holidays..

Mobile device use by guests . . .

That's completely different. I can glance at my phone as easily as glance at the artwork on your walls. And if something needs my attention, I can excuse myself for the moment and step away. Just as you might step away to ask a question like "where did you get that outfit?, I love it,"

The OP said use the phone exclusively. That is different. I wouldn't invite that guest again, rather than impose rules on polite and valued guests.

Farmhouse Rules--a new show on Food Network

I agree Niblet. I like her. Is she perfect in front of the camera? No. But she seems a nice enough person and I like hearing about her life. I don't view her show (or any other for that matter) on the Food Network to be a lesson on kitchen safety and advanced skills.

The grain of salt is I also like the Pioneer Woman, Barefoot Contessa, and Giada. I liked Paula's early years, but her personality got a bit too big for my taste.

I hope she does well.

Ideas for Baby's 1st Birthday - Theme Monkey

Black beans and rice with fried plantains
Banana bread pudding
naming a punch "jungle juice"

This is a tough theme to plan a menu around. The only food I associate with a monkey is bananas.
Good luck.

Unpleasant experience at CAGEN Sushi in East Village (former Kaijitsu space)

I think it was a bit pushy, after you heard and saw their response to the first order, you pushed for a second, That was rude.

Please explain this green bean casserole thing

It just happens to be the trifecta of thanksgiving dishes. Vegetable (ish), requires only a pyrex and a can opener, it's freakin awesome.

More for me. :)
