LA Buckeye Fan's Profile
Tourist Chowhound Food Crawl
Memorial Day weekend screams for Neptune's Net. Get some king crab legs, corn on the cob, a bottle of beer and watch the surfers and the bikers. Quintessential LA.
Tater Salad: How Do You Take It?
Two favorites: southern style with mayo, durkee sandwich spread, hb eggs, onion celery. And Emerils small red potatoes, mayo, grated raw garlic, cilantro, celery.
Truth be told, it's all good to me.
Celebrating my 30th birthday
Happy Birthday!
When I think of fun, I think of Tokyo Delves in North Hollywood. The food is mediocre sushi and it might be more of a party atmosphere than you are looking for. Also Dar Magrebs in Hollywood for Morrocan food is a fun environment. Again the food is solid but not spectacular. I wouldn't call either of these trendy, but that's because they've been around awhile.
I'll leave outstanding food and trendy recommendations to more informed chowhounds.
Who makes your favorite patty melt?
I really enjoyed the one at Boneyard Bistro. Expensive though it is.
LA Cheap Eats Food Tour--The Aftermath...
o.h.d.e.a.r.l.o.r.d!
Now that's a quest.
Bravo!
I need to make a dish for a party...using cream cheese.....
Just a couple of ideas,.. not exactly haute cuisine, but tasty. Cheese ball with clams, green onions and bacon. A little worstershire sauce and roll in minced green onions.
Cresent rolls made with strawberry jam and cream cheese, or pesto and cream cheese.
Tea sandwiches with cream cheese mixed with fine diced shallots, spread on raisin bread with turkey and basil leaves.
Not sure if you want an appetizer or more of an entree...mix with some tangy goad cheese, garlic, pancetta and a basil chiffonade and make a tangy mac and cheese.
Mother's Day Brunch in the Santa Clarita Valley
I had a nice new year's brunch at Salt Creek Grill.
Keith Gilabert: Orange Chicken That Tastes Like Candy!
I like their prik king and mint leaf noodle. I've never tried their orange chicken.
Visiting from NYC - what's the "best" of the things that aren't great here?
I forgive you ebethsdad. :)
What are your favorite crackers?
I love the Melrose brand parmesean croutons. They are more like a cracker t- long and flat shape. They are so crisp, I eat the entire bag.
I love graham crackers, and wheat thins, and the saltlick that calls itself "Chicken in a Biskit".
Coke for breakfast?
Diet rite. I know...it's getting harder and harder to find. But to me it tastes great and has not calories, caffeine, or sodium.
What are you favour 3 cuisines?
My three are probably based on the type of food that is avaialbe, since there are many cuisines I haven't eaten or eaten often.
American comfort (think cornbread, potato salad, Sunday roast, meatloaf)
Mexican (including many of the diffent styles: Sonoran, DF, baja fish tacos)
Italian- probably my favorite.
Favorite Frozen Food?
Mrs. T's potato and onion pierogies. Just saute them in a little butter.
Trader Joes turkey meatballs. In either a jarred marinara sauce or with beef gravy with sour cream.
I too like the banquet pot pies. Mostly for the price.
Trader Joe's Alscace frozen flat bread (i think that's the name)
Stouffers spinach soufflee
Weight watchers dark chocolate/raspberry ice cream bars.
Keith Gilabert: Sisley Italian Kitchen is Exceptional fresh homemade Italian Done Right.
I live by the one in Valencia. I've always found the food to be good. Not great. But considering the location, we don't have many choices. I do disagree on the breadsticks. They seem just live Olive garden, but with rosemary. I don't waste the calories. There is a chicken goat cheese pasta I enjoy, along with a spinach salad. I also like their roasted broccoli which I add goat cheese to and make it a meal. The service has always been very nice and attentive. Not a destination, but if you are in the area, and want italian, it's better than your other choices that are pretty much Olive Garden and Macaroni Grill.
Bachelorette party - restaurant suggestions
Small plates and a lovely rooftop at Zengo at the Santa Monica Promenade.I don't know whether they allow champagne and cake. It's a lively environment so I don't think you'd have to go far to do something afterwards.
Visiting from NYC - what's the "best" of the things that aren't great here?
You beat me to it ebethsdad! The quintessential southern california lunch! Get the king crab legs and enjoy watching the surfers.
Cold Food
Cold red wine poured over cold chocolate layer cake.
Cold limp green beans that were cooked with garlic and olive oil and put in the fridge.
cold, thinly sliced eye of round.
What makes your twice baked potatoes extra fabulous?
dianne0712,
I know you mentioned you can't eat seafood, so this is for others who can. The Original Silverpalate cookbook had a twiced baked with a sherry cream sauce with lobster. I will try and find the recipe. Boy was that ever good. I would use shrimp to cut the cost, but man, THAT SAUCE!
Breakfast that knocks your socks off
Boy this thread is making me hungry. I like to put brown crumbly sausage at the bottom of a baking dish...top it with a layer of uncooked jiffy cornbread mix (prepped to instructions on the box) and bake until the cornbread is done. I don't use the whole box, I usually like about 3/4 inch topping. Serve warm with maple syrup. And a mimosa to get my vitamin C.
I Wish I Could....
Microwave popcorn. I've almost received disciplinary action for this lack of skill and infringement on my coworkers.
Grocery Store Fried Chicken
My coworkers rave about Albertson's fried chicken. I've never tried it personally, but thought I'd put that on your radar.
Where Can I Buy Irish FLAPJACKS?
Thank you YILTT. I will have to try them next time.
Where Can I Buy Irish FLAPJACKS?
I didn't realize we were related, Servorg. Slainte!
Where Can I Buy Irish FLAPJACKS?
I'm just curious...what are Irish Flapjacks? I travel there frequently for work and pleasure and I don't recall ever seeing them on a menu. Would you mind describing them for me? I'll keep my eyes peeled my next visit. Thank you.
If all foods were nutritionally equal would you change your diet?
Absodamnlutely.
I would pour chocolate milk on top of my Lucky Charms Cereal to get my daily fiber.
Banana Split for my fruit points.
My most eaten vegetable would come in sour cream and onion, barbeque, and cool ranch flavors.
My spinanch salad with warm bacon dressing would only have a pinch of spinach in it.
And dinners would be math centric. Think 3.14. And never ending. Margherita, Blueberry would be first on the list of pi.
It's a Chowhound potluck or dinner party.. two dishes (with a caveat) and a wine, beer or cocktail if you wish
Fun topic. I would bring my carmelized salmon with cilantro garlic potato salad (thanks Emeril!) I have made it so many times that I know the technique and everybody loves it.
For my dirty little secret, I would make my feel better soup. Take two packets of Lipton Oodles of noodles dry soup mix, cook it with about half the water it calls for, and drop bisquick dumplings into it to cook overed. Eat with a Serving spoon and pads of butter.
For my drink, I would make a pitcher of dark and stormy's. It'll cut the saltiness of the salt lick that is FEEL BETTER SOUP.
Best place you ate at this week?
Sorry It's been so long since you posted your question. My favorite place is China Palace on Lyons avenue. But mostly for nostalgic reasons...I used to go there with my parents. The food is rather mediocre.
