High end dim sum in the area

Second Red Star but note that the menu is printed in Mandarin only and the "picture menu" only shows about 20 items, mostly those which are pretty standard. Always frustrating to see great looking food and have no idea how to order it next time.

Near Bentley Hotel on E 62 at York

Staying one night later this month at the Bentley and wondering about 1) a late night casual spot for one person for dinner on a Wednesday and 2) a great breakfast spot nearby. Late would need to be after 10:30 PM so probably a deli or maybe casual Italian but suggestions appreciated.

Bucatini pasta?

Used to buy Barilla brand bucatini at Stongs on Dunbar but it seems to have disappeared from there and other places we have looked on the west side of Vancouver. Anyone seen it lately anywhere west of Main St? (not stuck on the brand but do like bucatini over other long pastas)

Birthday dinner in Barcelona September 7

Appreciate this rec-- they are closed on Sunday but we went on the Monday and had a fabulous dinner at a reasonable price. All of us agreed that they deserve their Michelin star.

Amateur cooking classes in Vancouver?

We had previously enjoyed and benefited from classes at the old Dubrulle Cooking School and the now closed Cook Shop in City Square. So question is, where are there interesting cooking classes for amateurs in Vancouver now? Prefer hands on with a chance to enjoy the food at the end of the evening (with a glass of wine?). Whatever cuisines but thought this might be an interesting conversation.

Sablefish versus Alaska Black Cod

Sorry if this is a bit mundane but is there any difference between these? Wikipedia implies they are the same but at a local very well known Japanese restaurant this week, the hostess spent time noting how this was sablefish, NOT Alaska black cod. Is this just a marketing thing like Copper River salmon? Is one more sustainable than the other?

Detroit near Hilton Garden Inn Downtown

Like others, have noted the inability to reply to comments but felt I should give feedback since I am now home from Detroit. Went to Wright and Co on Thursday night and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. Service was friendly and reasonable wines by the glass. The tuna tartare was recommended as a favourite but to be honest was my least preferred of the 3 plates I ordered. Far more enjoyable were the duck liver mousse and the charcuterie plate. All in all a good experience. For breakfast Friday went to the Hudson Café and also enjoyed it. Had the huevos rancheros which were excellent (although no beans which I had always thought were mandatory for this dish). Good service in a simple atmosphere and very reasonable price. So all in all a good outcome and glad I asked--thanks to all for the ideas!

Detroit near Hilton Garden Inn Downtown

Looking for a rec for dinner Thursday evening and breakfast Friday morning. Have never been to Detroit before so prefer close to the hotel (safe walk). For breakfast, noted a place called the Ham Shop on another site but not sure if this lives up to it's reputation? Any thoughts appreciated

Vancouver July 2014 Trip Report

Glad you found waiting for almost 2 hours at Vij's acceptable. This reinforces the owner's impression of his wonderfulness and that customers will willingly be treated like cattle to reinforce his ego. Most great restaurants have discovered something called "reservations" which allows both diner and resto to be treated with respect.

Grub on Main

Has Grub reopened after their fire earlier this year?

we need to visit the Drive from time to time for other reasons so this would allow and exemption from the west of Main criteria! Thanks.

West side limitation is just to try to minimize drive/gas use and help the environment.

Morning coffee/muffin in Vancouver

Being recently retired, my wife and I are looking to expand our selection of places to enjoy a leisurely coffee/baked goods in the morning(s). Nothing against the coffee at the "green mermaid" but what we want is a combination of people watching ambience, good coffee and tea, and a nice selection of baked goods, preferably fresh and in house ( free parking an added bonus). We have relied on JJ Bean at Main and 14, Bean Around the World at 21 and Main, the cinnamon bun place at Alma and 10th, and a few others on the west side. So, looking for suggestions anywhere west of Main that fit the bill. Hope there are some little pleasant places we have missed and would like to try.

where to buy a cleaned octopus

Saw an interesting recipe for grilled octopus on the weekend but noted that the instructions were to "clean the octopus and remove the head". I am not hesitant to do this but I have no idea which parts to keep and which to throw away so I thought it made a lot more sense to just buy a fresh cleaned/beheaded one. Any suggestions? (last post on this I saw was from 2009 and things change).

agree. We decided on the W for various reasons but we have been there before so knew that it is a bit out of the way. Will have time to try other places as well as the birthday dinner but want to do something nice on the day as you only turn 65 once!

Birthday dinner in Barcelona September 7

A friend will be turning 65 on Sept 7 and we (4 of us) will be flying into BCN that evening, arriving at 1830, to depart on a cruise on the 10th. So, suggestions for a later dinner (realizing Catalan dining is late to begin with) allowing time to get from the airport to hotel, freshen up, and get to a restaurant. Not sure of hotel yet but possibly the Mandarin Oriental, W, or Hotel Arts. Suggestions much appreciated.

Travel Gifts

Going to Japan in 2 weeks and wondering about where in Vancouver to buy suitable food related gifts (maple sugar cookies come to mind) for the grandchildren of hosts? Complicating factor is that we're connecting through SEA so cannot buy anything duty free at YVR for security reasons. Guess what I am looking for is a "Canadiana food shop" suitable for children's gifts and something which won't suffer being schlepped around for almost 2 weeks before it is gifted (so chocolates might be a problem). Any ideas much appreciated
