Weekday breakfast (tomorrow)
Went to Nice Cafe. Lovely waitress and reasonable coffee and tea. Hashbrowns were as described but afraid the eggs (poached) for both my wife and I were hard cooked when we had asked for soft. My wife had the eggs benny and both of us agreed the Hollandaise was tasteless and the ham was just sliced deli ham. Overall, worth a try but would not go back.
The Red Onion - new owner + renovation
The barber around the corner was my source; the window announcement is there so interesting to see what develops.
The Red Onion - new owner + renovation
I hear that the former owners have rented the space vacated by the Tinker's Hatch bakery at 33 and Mackenzie and looking to open an upscale bakery cafe there (name on the window paper but have forgotten it). Anyone know?
Weekday breakfast (tomorrow)
Looking for a casual breakfast tomorrow and wondering about the Argo Cafe, Nice Cafe, or Red Wagon? Lots of reviews on all on other sites but not a lot here.
Saturday dinner near Hotel Melia Castilla, Madrid
Looking for somewhere walking distance from the hotel for good local flavour (food flavour and atmosphere flavour if possible). Just one person.
Looking for a specific wine with dinner
I recently enjoyed a William Hill Estate Cabernet Sauvignon in NYC and wondered where in downtown SF I might find this? Staying 2 nights early Feb at the Palace Hotel on New Montgomery street so somewhere close would be great. (I realize this is a bit of a backward request in wine before food but the wine was exceptional).
Where did "date started" go?
Over the last 72-96 hours I can only see the topics by "last post" rather than "date started". Hope this is not permanent?
Cardamom flavoured tea?
Thanks Sam but called and was told that GI Tea has discontinued it; can you suggest any specific place on Fraser or Main St?
Cardamom flavoured tea?
My wife was given some cardamom flavoured tea by a friend who had been to India and has asked for some as a stocking stuffer. Since time is a bit short to get to India and back, any ideas where this can be found in Vancouver?
Bengal room/lounge in the Empress
I guess I am a bit ambivalent! I have been to the BL for a drink before and it is lovely. I live in Vancouver so lots of good Indian food-- guess I was thinking the combo would be interesting.
Bengal room/lounge in the Empress
looking at a weekday night in Victoria and wondering if the Indian/curry buffet at the Bengal Room is worth a try?
Paella in Sevilla
Staying near the cathedral next 4 nights and my wife wants authentic paella. Suggestions within walking distance for this? (and any other special spots in this area?)
Vegetarian Restaurants
Aphrodite on West 4th near Alma has vegetarian and vegan but is not purely vegetarian. Can't speak for the quality because had the Cuban omelette (sorry cusjo) but the place is alway full of Kits types and the veg stuff looks good.
2 specific downtown questions
A friend will be staying at the Wedgewood for a couple of days soon. In the past we had enjoyed the restaurant there, Bacchus, but have not been for several years. Is it still good? Friend is a single woman but I am sure she would be comfortable there (especially since she will be a guest at the hotel).
Second, she want to enjoy sushi/sashimi (she's from Oklahoma so there ain't a lot of fresh salmon there!). Where should we send her in that area (we usually go to Ajisai and other places south of False Creek). Guu etc along Robson or where downtown and walking distance from the Wedgewood?

Maybe it was the Groupon??
I think the disconnect is likely between the owner/management who see this as an incentive for people to eat at the restaurant and perhaps splurge, and the wait staff who I suspect sometimes get stiffed on the tip because the diner may tip on the bottom line bill rather than the pre-discount. We have used Entertainment book coupons for years and there is a perceptible difference in the attitude at many places once the coupon is laid on the table. I make a point of NEVER indicating that it is a coupon before the end of the meal but I also make a point of tipping on the total bill before discount and hope the waiter remembers if/when we are next at the establishment.
Not uplifted at Lift
Father's Day at Lift: arrived at 1055 for 1100 and informed that elderly parents with cane could not be seated because the reservation was for 1100 (the resto was empty and the servers were all present, just not "officially" open yet). Server could not have been less interested. 3/4 had the buffet and every plate sat on the table until we caught her eye and asked for it to be removed. Nice dessert display but no sign of spoons on the table or beside the desserts to eat the pot de creme type dessert. When asked, the maitre-d had to ask one of the busboys to find a spoon (this seemed like an imposition on the maitre-d although the busboy was pleasant and helpful).
Food was nice but nothing could compensate for being treated like an imposition on the server's time on a special day.
Terminal 1 at JFK tonight?
Flight delayed to midnight so wondering if there is anywhere to eat worth eating in T-1? Will be transferring there from T-7.
Indian in Edinburgh
Wondering where to go for good Indian food in Edinburgh? Preferably around Princes St or the New Town so can walk there from the Cally.
Merritt BC recommendations?
bit of a non sequitur but if you enjoy really nice honey there is a place called Nicola Valley Apiary which has it both in usual containers and nice decorative stoneware pots. We bought 2 dozen for staff Christmas presents and got great feedback. They have a website.
Where to buy mirin
Need to find this Japanese rice wine for a relative in the Interior and wondering where to reliably find it on the west side of Vancouver (if possible)
Indian in Hampstead?
Have a couple of evenings in London this weekend staying near Belsize Park tube stn. Wondering about decent Indian places either around the Royal Free Hospital or up on Hampstead High Street? Nothing exotic, just authentic and comfortable for a single diner.
What is the best Salmon and where to eat it?
sorry to sound clinical but remember that salmon, including line caught, fresh, wild, etc are susceptible to parasites, including worms. The "fresh" fish you see in sushi restos in Vancouver and elsewhere has been flash frozen at sea to kill these.
dinners for one near Villiers Metro?
I will be staying at a hotel on Rue de Constantinople for a week, close to Villiers metro stop. Wondering about local places in the area for dinner where a single person would be comfortable? Also, any particularly good cafe/patisserie suggestions for a coffee and croissant in the early morning when needing to get kick started over the jet lag for the day? Thanks in advance.
North-East Vancouver
Looking for a place to meet friends who live in Pt Moody (we are on Vanc west side); thinking about the area East of Commercial and North of Broadway. Any thoughts in that area? I drive through there but nothing except the places on the Drive come to mind.
would like a "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" roadtrip to Victoria from Calgary
The Husky Gas restaurant in Golden has always been rated well for what you describe (and is open 24/7 so no matter what time you get there you can eat whatever meal you want).
No choice in viewing?
One thing I valued in the older format was the ability to review by either most recent addition or newest (date started) post. I understood this was to be available by the end of October but I don't see it working.
Millet Flour and sorghum flour
Famous Foods on Kingsway (where 25th intersects) has a huge variety of grains and might be worth checking also.
Kelowna BBQ
There is a BBQ place in Kelowna called Memphis Blues--is this an offshoot of the same place in Vancouver and is it worth a visit for a hungry carnivore? I have walked by before when in Kelowna but it seems a bit spartan decor wise.
