Bangkok: best middle eastern around Suk?

I don't know if it's the best, but I have been eating at Shahrazad for almost 20 years and have never been disappointed. It's consistently packed with tourists from the Middle East. Prices have gone up but the quality stays the same.
It's on the small soi one street east of Sukhumvit Soi 3. (Soi 3/1). Walk down past the soi that cuts back out to Soi 3 and it's on the left side. There is a large grill area outside.

Are there any Lao or Northern Thai restaurants in the city?

It's hard to find good northern Thai food in Bangkok, so I imagine there isn't much in Toronto.
The owners of Vanipha are from Nong Khai, so they give lip service to Lao-Issan dishes. (i.e. laab, som tam, 'gai yang'). They have at least one northern dish as well. (nam prik ong)
The last meal I had there was years ago and was terrible.
Maybe try the new Khao San Rd Restaurant and ask if they will prepare for you. Most Thai cooks know how to do the staples.

Cambodian Restaurants in the GTA?

"I would argue that Cambodian food is MORE spicy, not less, than Thai."

My experience after living in Cambodia for many years, and now living in Bangkok, is the exact opposite. Very few Khmer dishes arrive at the table spicy. The spice factor is usually added by each diner as a condiment.

My own view is that Cambodian food sucks compared to Thai. YMMV of course.

Bangkok and Siem Riep Recommendations, Please

I lived in Cambodia for 6 yrs in the 90s and whenever I went to Siem Reap I would eat at the sort of middle class Khmer places on the outskirts of town. You would never see a foreigner in any of them and the food was always great and ridiculously cheap.
Tell your guide you want "samlor m'choo", "yam trey cha-a" and "trey r'oa cha k'ney". That will get his attention and he should be able to take you to a local place where you can get those dishes. (sour tamarind soup, smoked fish salad and a tasty river fish cooked with a huge amount of caramelized ginger.)

Koh Lipe, Thailand for Songkran

Pretty much nothing there but tourist places, so I wouldn't go expecting much. As you are there for Songkran, there probably will be an influx of Thai tourists. Ingratiate yourself with some of them and you might get invited for dinner. (They tend to bring their own food for these holidays.)

South indian food in Toronto

I gave up on downtown Southern Indian and make the trek to the deep burbs for Saravanaa Bhavan.

Somboon Seafood Vs. Rut & Lek In Bangkok

For another option to the Somboon style place, I have been going to an old school seafood restaurant on my soi (Rang Nam). It's call 'Kuang Seafood' and has a very similar menu to Somboon, but zero tourists. Prices are incredibly reasonable as well.

Here is someone else's write up.

Khao San Road opens tomorrow

People from impoverished Issan do all the heavy lifting jobs in Thailand. Construction, service, drivers etc. They are everywhere from north to south and have obviously taken their food with them.

Khao San Road opens tomorrow

Laab and those type of salads are from the northeast (Lao speaking Issan), completely different than northern (Lanna) cuisine.

Is there better Thai than Sukhothai in Toronto?

Better hope that the food's better than the backpacker crud served on the real Khao San Rd. (Big and bland.)

For any of you Toronto hounds traveling to SEAsia, I have recently relocated back to Bangkok. Look me up if you're coming through and we'll go eat.
Awesome chow-town.

hong kong memories? foggy at best

Sounds like you got drunk in Lan Kwai Fong and ended up in Wanchai. More or less a normal night out for many people in this town.
No idea about Indian joint.

Chicken from Shilin Night Market

Checked it out. It's OK but not worth a trip IMO. (I was going to Fa Yuen St anyway.)
Big line up, but moves quickly as they take 4-5 minutes to do a batch of approx 10.
Two options - traditional or spicy. The nuggets were unavailable.
Pretty big hunk of bird meat for HK$25, can't imagine you're eating quality ingredients.

Bangkok and southern Thailand island-hopping

I recently had a week of work on Samui. I hadn't been there since 1990. The food along the main beach road in Chaweng was brutal. I ended up going a few streets back into some local markets and eating from stalls. Back in there it's the same food as any Thai town.

Best Ramen in Bangkok

Probably in 2008, but it had been there for at least 8 yrs before that.
There was also great Japanese nearby at the Nai Lert Hotel (lots of embassy people ate there), but I think that restaurant is gone.

Best Ramen in Bangkok

Yes, Ramen Tei was always my go-to ramen place in BKK too. When I worked on Sukhumvit Soi 33 there was one in soi 33/1 near the Bull's Head. Quite a few Japanese options in that soi btw.

As an aside, a Japanese foodie friend introduced me to a great place serving Japanese hand-made soba noodles. I can't remember the name of the place, but it's in the small street running south of Ploenchit just west of Wittayu (Wireless) beside the bank bldg. (Near all the Thai food stalls where the office workers eat lunch.) The restaurant is kind of dark slate colour. Expensive for dinner but the have a lunch special set with handmade soba and a chunk of wasabi root to grate over them. It's around 250B for the full set, which my Japanese friend says is a deal.
Apparently you pay large for these in Japan, which I wouldn't know firsthand.

In Canada I used to go for their salads all the time. At $6:50-ish they were a decent deal. After a break of a couple of yrs I had one the other day. It was $9.50 and terrible.

Thai Lime & Chili Peanuts - Trader Joe's

I tried the cashews and they didn't work for me at all. I've lived in Thailand and love kaffir lime leaves, but the combination of that with too much chili was not one of Trader Joe's finer moment. I went looking for the chili lime pistachios, not realizing they had been discontinued.
As a Canadian I often route my US roadtrips through towns with TJs and I fill my trunk.

My parents, who have lived in Picton for 50 yrs and eat out a couple of times a week, say that Blumen has the best lunch. A year ago it was East & Main but they reckon it's gone downhill since opening.
