Alternative to Ghiradelli Chocolate Chips Needed
I use chocolate chips (more in the shape of drops) from See's Candy. Sometimes you have to ask for them, they're not always out on display.
What were your last 3 cookbook purchases? Part 5 [Old]
Just this afternoon purchased, on line, Marilyn Sorosky, Cooking For Entertaining. I had this book in the 70's...and it was a lifesaver for me at the time.
What do you look for in a good matzo ball soup?
Saul's Deli, best rice pudding ever!
Trying to find the derivation of this Italian pasta name
Does your wife's family recipe exclude potatoes? My family makes Cavatelli. It's similar to gnocchi only without potato. We sometimes make them with ricotta but can also be made without. Cavatelli is a firmer pasta that is rolled the same way as gnocchi.
I miss my mom's______dish!
My mother's eggplant parmesan. She did the dipping in egg and flour and fried in olive oil. So good. I do it the lazy way, no dipping in anything and bake in the oven.
When I say "coffee cake" ...
(B). Trader Joe's has recently put out some boxed cake mixes and frostings. One is a coffee cake. I have it but haven't made it. The picture on the box sure looks good!
How do you tell your mother-in-law her dinner parties/family dinners are not fun?
This has been a very interesting thread. I'm not close to 78, but I gladly passed the torch to my kids for hosting holiday dinners. I'm pretty much a control freak in the kitchen as well, and all the confusion that goes with cooking and kids running around would just be too much for me. So I bring the stuffing and a couple of other things to their home. I do much of the cleaning up and all ends well, at least I think it does.
Maybe UnChowhoudish, but...
I'm pretty excited about the McRib being back. I'm planning on feasting on Saturday night!
Ambrosia Salad... 80's Party worthy? Other suggestions?
Oh for sure, 70's. My mom used to make it.
Cheese on Seafood?
I'm third generation Italian, 100%, and I love grated cheese on Linguini and Clam Sauce, white or red.

I prefer supermarket pancake syrup (lite) above pure maple syrup.
What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?
Cabbage. And my mother would make these salmon croquettes that I hated.
when far from home, what foods do you miss/crave the most?
Atlantic City was my family's vacation spot every summer. The first thing we'd do when we arrived, was to have a Taylor Pork Roll. This was back in the mid fifties and you couldn't buy them anywhere by NJ.
Where & how do you keep your potatoes & onions
Just the two of us now and Safeway is 5 minutes away so I shop for these things as needed. I have a couple bulbs of garlic in a small milk glass bowl on my counter next to the stovetop.
What classical desserts would you like to see make a comeback on menus?
I'd like to see hot fudge sundae and creme dementhe parfait on menus. I always go for ice cream. Also some homemade puddings with whipped cream.
Bagged Salad, gag me!!!
When I'm feeling particularly lazy, I'll buy the bagged lettuce at Trader Joe's. Tastes perfectly fine and fresh.
Entenmann's Cakes/Cookies/Pies/ Pastries [moved from Not about Food board]
I used to love the Banana Crunch Cake with that chocolate swirl over the top.
Childhood food envy?
Had those little boxes of cereal at girl scout camp. Loved them.
My beef with grocery stores recently
Albertson's in my area (Phoenix) doesn't even use those cards anymore.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I used to love the Betty Crocker Noodles Romanoff. When I was newly married I would mix it with a can of tuna . I've also tried the from scratch and definately not as good.
What discontinued products do you miss?
I loved those Pepperidge Farm chocolate cookies. I believe they were simply called Brownie. In those days, I could/would eat one after another. .
Best pasta sauce in a jar?
I make my own sauce from scratch, but tried this on a friend's recommendation last night. Trader Joe's Bolognese and it was excellent.
Has anyone tried Kirkland (Costco) Mayo?
Very helpful, thank you. I'll stick with my Best Foods/Hellmans.
What food find still haunts you - that you had once and haven't found since?
This brought back a nice memory of the lemon ice we had growing up in the 50's. It was a brick building on the main road from Schenectady to Albany. So smooth, lemony and creamy.
Has anyone tried Kirkland (Costco) Mayo?
I feel the same way you do, that's why I'd like a review. I tried Dukes once and that was the only time. It's hard to believe some people can't stand mayo at all.
Has anyone tried Kirkland (Costco) Mayo?
I saw it the other day for the first time . Wonder how it compares to Best Foods.
