Macadamia nut oil in Montreal?

I saw it at Loblaws on St. Jacques this afternoon. Small bottle for $16.99, placed with the rest of the oils.

Iburger

Ordering system is way beyond gimmicky. Everything is overpriced obviously to pay off for the high tech tables and Windex. My "AAA Angus beef" was overcooked and felt like eating a sponge. Maybe they need some time to work out the kinks considering they've only been around for a short time... but I'm not marking my calender for a return visit.

Dim Sum (Yum Cha) for Chinese New Year's Suggestions

There will be a Chinese lion dance performance here on Sunday February 5th around 11-noon.

Real Beijing Duck / Peking Duck - best place in Montreal?

Great! I'm glad you liked it. Most take out menus are abbreviated anyways, I guess it's easier for them, or use this as a way to entice customers to eat in the dining room.

Real Beijing Duck / Peking Duck - best place in Montreal?

Yes, we're both right, no need to order it in advance. lol.

Looking for fresh NY-style bagel in Montreal

I've asked this many times before, and instead of getting an answer I've gotten berated about NY style bagels aren't bagels and that I'm not a REAL Montrealer... blah blah blah. After some searching, I've found that some supermarkets (IGA, Metro) that bake their own breads usually make their own bagels too. And because they abide to strict standardized recipes throughout the company (it's not like they'll take the time to boil the dough in honey water), these are the closest you'll find to NY style bagels! Might not be made fresh daily, but if you ask, they will tell you which days they make them.

Good luck!!!

Restaurant Closings - 2010

I noticed the other day Rockaberry's on Queen Mary has closed. A sign announcing reopening as another restaurant is on the window, the name escapes me.

***EDIT

I just checked the website and saw this,

"Our Queen Mary location is moving to Trendy Monkland Village!!!! Opening Soon!!!!! "

I guess we'll keep a look out.

New Vietnamese Resto on Decarie Pho 88

I'm sorry you feel that way, but the level of preparation and exceeding attention to detail that you would expect, I can see coming from a finer dining establishment and not a noodle house located next to a wig shop and a pet store. Regarless of location, I can understand your frustration, however, I can also understand and sympathize with a restaurant owner's rush to open. Having taken over a previous Italian restaurant, extensive renovation would have had to be done to the kitchen to accommodate an "Asian" kitchen. I would sympathize with a restaurant owner to rush his or her opening when rent is being paid and time being wasted.

Just keep in mind, Pho is usually a family recipe. Each chef in each Vietnamese restaurant WILL make it differently, whether it is by technique or ingredients, no two Phos from different restaurants will ever taste the same. So if the pho is 'good' or not will usually be be considered as personal taste.

Also, I'm the biggest advocate of this mentality when it comes to ethnic eating... eat where the people eat! If you look around you and you don't see any Vietnamese people around you, that should say something to you,

On to the next bowl!

New Vietnamese Resto on Decarie Pho 88

The owner is the sister of the owner of Paris Pho on Poirier in VSL. I was at Pho 88 two weeks back and I agree the broth isn't there yet, but I attribute that to time. They've only been open a few weeks and it'll take some time to work out the kinks and season the cookware accordingly, as with the inexperienced wait-staff.

What is Montreal's Best Greek Restaurant?

This can possibly be true, the parking garage always smelled like food and deep fry oil, (not that *I* would mind), but I can see it as being a problem for other people with the smell of food seeping through the walls into their living rooms.

New York Style bagels.

Before the Montreal vs. New York argument begins, can someone tell me where I can find fresh "New York style bagels"? Besides the packaged ones from the grocery store.

Thanks!

First, Congratulations and salutations, then let's discuss Moishe's

This doesn't make sense... If someone is going to waste money on Montreal steak, a side of fries is the only way that justifies it?

Appleton Vietnamese Resto in Cote des Neiges

They're called "rice cake". You can order them with or without the egg.

As fish sauce isn't a basic condiment in Chinese cuisine, I guess it's foreseeable that those products don't fly off the shelves in Chinatown. Try the Kim Phats', Goyer and Jarry, and Marche Hawaii on Marcel Laurain.

Best Smoked Salmon in Montreal - where to buy

Yes, These guys have been around forever. I remember my grandmother bringing me here when I was a kid. I get my smoked salmon exclusively from them.

Braised pork belly with preserved vegetables (Chinese-Hakka dish) in Montreal? Where can I find it?

Most Chinese places have it. Chances are if it's not written in the english menu, it's probably listed on the wall or the far more extensive chinese menu! Just ask for it.

Where can I get vanilla beans?

Believe it or not... Loblaws; bottom shelf of the spice rack.

Who makes the best sandwiches in town?

Well, comparing Montreal smoked meat and New York Pastrami is like comparing apples and oranges. Given, it's the same cut of meat, but the preparation of both is different. It's like saying KFC's fried chicken is way better than a Chinese soy sauce chicken.

What is Montreal's Best Greek Restaurant?

Parthenon, on the corner of Van horn and Cote-des-Neiges, next to the Petro Canada, HANDS DOWN. Quality food does not always necessarily equate to expensive pricey dishes, especially in this case. Family run joint and everything is cooked with the most important ingredient... LOVE.

What's The Best Montreal Area Dim Sum Joint, Right Now?

Tong por will be moving into the new Swatow tower building in Chinatown.

What's The Best Montreal Area Dim Sum Joint, Right Now?

Sorry for the late reply, but my favorite is still Kam Fung in Chinatown. It's cramped and busy and noisy and chaotic, exactly the right ingredients that make dim sum taste better!

Where to find soft shell crab?

You'll probably never see fresh soft shell crabs, but the frozen ones are just as good. You'll be able to find them in most Asian grocery stores, like Kim Phat or Hawaii.

Tim Tams at Montreal Loblaws?

Found the original and caramel version at the Loblaws in T.M.R / V.S.L for $2.99 each.
