Trip to Niagara Falls/Buffalo N.Y. what grocery items would you bring back?

Going to Niagara on the Lake and will be crossing the border for some shopping. Have never thought of grocery items...
So, what would you bring back and where would you go to buy?

Any other suggestions as to where to go, what to do, where to eat...etc
Is all welcomed!

Is this saffron?

Thank you, I thought it was saffron but your right it isn't. The odd thing is it doesn't turn yellow, it's more of a washed out week odd pinkish colour. And the threads are very hard and they turn white after blooming for a while.

Is this saffron?

The pictures I've seen of safflower seem more petal like. Why are you thinking it is safflower?

Is this saffron?

Thank you everyone, your thoughts were appreciated and helpful. I think Kris may have found what this maybe.
I hope someone will come along and know what the writing means.

As for sumac and safflower, it difinitely isn't either, it's not lemon and safflower looks like dried petals.

Again, thank you fellow chowhounds!

forgot to ask, how do you use it. Do you bloom it in water? If so, what ratio? Also, I bloomed some and left it in the refrigeratore and after several weeks I noted that the colour was gone..and there was this white sidment in the bottom...thanks

Hello kris, yes it does look similar. I think this is it. I knew it was not traditional saffron but could not figure out what it was. Thanks!

Help dry out veal shoulder braised

Well I did it this time. I put a veal shoulder to braise and then fell asleep. By the time I woke up it had been in the oven for 9 hours at 325. All the liquid was gone and I'm left with dried out meat.
Can it be saved and if so what?

Education on smoked pork shoulder ham

I don't know much about this subject. There are 3 different cuts I have noticed. There is the picnic that has a netting..currently the olymel brand is on sale...and then there are two different cuts... One has a round end, the other has a shank like bone at the end... I suspect the last two are cut in half and if they weren't they would make a whole shoulder.

My questions are.. What is a picnic and what cuts listed are best and why. The what to do with then once you bring them home? Any other suggestions or advise would be great. Thx

Storing coconut macaroons

How would you store coconut macaroons and still have them crispy on the outside?
I need to made 4-6 dozen as a shower gifts and need to make them ahead. How far ahead can I do this?
Also, I know I want a recipe without condensed milk and maybe have some with whipped egg whites and some with just beaten eggs. All suggestions and recipes are really appreciated. Thank you

over worked biscotti dough

I tried a new recipe for biscotti and the raw dough was way too sweet!
So in an attempt to correct this I added more flour, egg and milk. I ended up working it too long in the kitchen aid. I want to freeze them and bake them later and and am wondering if i let them rest in the refrigerate for a number of hours would that salvage them?

I've never used cheesecloth....do you wrap the stuffing in the cloth then stick it in the bird...do you tie the legs? I remember seeing martha stewart's bird had the stuffing all brown and crispy sticking out of the opening of the bird...which looked pretty, but you can have that look with the cloth....

I may still try it! Thanks for the tip and travel safely! oh, do you stuff the breast cavity without the cloth?

I too tried the breast side down but didn't find a difference. I most likely will do the martha stewart cheesecloth method. I don't know if it really keeps the turkey more moist, but it sure makes it brown beautifully!

Your confit's duck brick sounds great to me!
Question...what do you mean by a "moist" oven? And doesn't resting the turkey in the oven dry/overcook it??
Your stuffing sounds nice, do you use chicken stock and raw eggs to keep it together? recipe??

I wonder what people's thoughts are on stuff turkeys verse unstuffed turkeys....is the stuffing better in the turkey??? Food for thought..
