Hearth or Il Buco for private party?
Hearth!!!!
However if you want that rustic Itatian setting do Peasant. That is a tough call Peasant vs Hearth, I couldnt say one is definitely better than the other and their menus are different enough you don't have to compare them like that. Peasant is one of my very favorite places in NY. Have been to Hearth only twice but it was fantastic both times.
Puffin in NYC??
Can you buy horse meat for human consumption in the US? Sort of realted but not and I should shut up and google that myself right now. Sorry.
Please Ctritique my 5 day/4 Night Food Schedule
I stopped doing brunch alot, but it should be noted that many (most) brunch spots do not take a res and waits can easily be over an hour. Breakfast at Clinton on monday morning will treat you right, brunch on a weekend there is a 2 hour wait on a nice day. Which is why I've eaten there twice in the last 5 years.
Tips on tipping - pleeease [moved from Manhattan board}
15% was the standard 20 years ago. Minimum wage for "tipped" workers has remained virtually unchanged for over 20 years. Waitstaff make $2.25 and have since I was 13 years old, 20% is the rule.
Somehow cute waitresses seem to get more but that's my problem.
I agree with an earlier poster, tip 20% or eat somewhere cheaper.
Also note tipping is not expected when you take out food from a restaurant or even a fancy coffee counter. However delivered food should be tipped, and preferably in cash. I dont have a set amount I tip delivery, but it probably works out to 18 or 20% but if its raining or snowing they get more from me.
I dont have a rule for tipping taxis, but its usually less than 20%. If I stay in Manhattan and it's an average cab ride I tip $1 and the change for a short trip and $2 and the change for a longer one. If I use the card machine in there I usually do 15%. Maybe I'm a jerk, but they do not rely on tips the way waitstaff do.
Alt Bier - where to drink
When I went to Dusseldorf I remember being told there were 3 breweries. It was definitely a "thing" in Dusseldorf and that it was unique to that city. A waiter a a beer hall told me it's not exported, and is mostly served only locally.
What I was wondering was if I can get the "real" thing here. They serve it like kolsch in the little glasses and just keep bringing them until you say stop. It was great stuff, the total opposite from Kolsch which is 50 miles away which is certainly not served in Dusseldorf.
Meanwhile I'll have to check out Weschlers, I live close by
Alt Bier - where to drink
Any German bars serve? Ive been told its not exported. I know Zum Schneider does not have it cuz I'm sitting here now.

re. Red Lobster
Though I am an east coast snob and I buy lobster live and cook em at home I have a scoop on RL. A friend from here worked his way through grad school at a Red Lobster in Arizona and did say that the lobsters were delivered alive regularly.
That's not to say I havent cooked some bland lobsters (read not sweet) but at least I can say they attempt to do it right. Still I havent been to one since 1987.
I'm guessing Houston's and Ruth's Chris don't really count.
Anyone tried Hot Kitchen on 2nd Ave?
WOW!
We went 2 days ago as a group of four and the food was great. I travel to China alot and although I don't go to Sichuan province it is my favorite cuisine so I eat it alot. I can say this food, at least in my experience of sichuan restaurants (in Jiangsu and Zhejiang) was quite authentic in flavor with the added bonus of better quality meat.
We had the following:
Hot and Sour Potato noodles
Dry sauteed whole spicy green pepper
Sauteed Spicy Chinese Broccoli
Mei Shan Beef
Steamed Whole Fish with Hot Bean Sauce
Cumin Lamb
I can not understand how anyone did not enjoy their meal. The food was hot, and dishes marked with 4 chilis were certainly VERY spicy. The potato noodle appetizer fed 4 and was delicious. The broth was in fact spicy and sour with chewy glass noodles. The whole green peppers were much too hot (we were warned) and I eat hot food regularly. The Mei Shan beef had a good heat to it and plenty of peppers and peanuts. This was almost too much for some at the table but 2 of us found it just right. This is a fried dish which is then sauteed so the beef is crisp outside but chewy inside and of better quality than most chinese resaurants. I found it just right and akin to dishes I've eaten over seas. The cumin lamb too was also served just as I've had it in china but not on skewers. But for me the highlight was the steamed fish with hot bean sauce. Fish was very fresh and bean sauce was not just spicy but had a great and distinctive flavor. Being a whole fish there was plenty of skin and fatty parts for me. But the meat was delicate and mild for others.
I liked this beter than Grand Sichuan which I find to be overlly greasy, even considering most sichuan food is by nature quite oily. To be fair I have not eaten at GS too many times, but have delivered and never been wild for anything.
Steam fish head with minced chilis is my favorite dish when I travel and I will have to order it next time with a more adventurous crowd. Although I urge anyone to try it, it just looks and sounds odd. If you like soft steamed fish meat with plenty of skin and soft greasy bits you will love fish head.
I hate to pound on about traveling to China and eating the "real thing" since every restaurant either anywhere has their own spin on things. But this food was really good and it's the real deal for anyone concerned with that type of thing. I also have a fondness for gringo chinese delivery so I will be trying that out on a cold night soon.

Anyone tried Hot Kitchen on 2nd Ave?
Fish Head right at top of the specials. Anyone tried it? I'll need to stop by soon and report back.
Could also use a good american chinese place for delivery. EV now lacking in that dept since the new mgmt at Yummy House.
Public, Hearth or DBGB??
Best food will be at Hearth for sure. DBGB was forgettable. Public is unique with great cocktails to boot. But if you want to eat well go to Hearth.

El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria
I go around noon and when they're fresh and hot they're fantastic. The farthest thing from bland. Its the 1 thing I prefer at habibi over souk.
El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria
I'm quite friendly with both brothers and from my understanding you've got it right.
Btw main diff between shwarmas at either place is souk shater puts on some kind of super garlic sprea That alone is enough for me to declare win them win in the shawarma department. Also they throw it on a sandwich press for a minute just before wrapping it up.
The falafel at habibi is ridiculous.

the bad thing is that many reviews of EV sushi places get excited about cheap spicy tuna rolls, which are a very poor indication of quality. Mayo and chili powder added to even the worst tuna scraps will always taste decent.
Nori on EV is now a noodle place?! ISO replacement delivery
It's still opened but a friend said his delivery is gross. Either way sushi places were getting bad grades often because they don't keep the fish at the legal temperatures. However those temperatures are more appropriate for serving the fish.
I was ready to give Fu a try til I heard from that friend, however I'd give it a chance. It's very close by, but so is Takahachi and I see no reason to go elsewhere for that price range. $4.50 uni and it was pretty good.

You can definitely get lucky there and land a short wait. Terroir is down the street. Great wine bar if there's alot of time to kill.

RIP nori. Anyone got an equivalent for EV sushi delivery? All I can do now is pick up at takahashi. With winter coming I need delivery.
Ditto for gringo chinese. Yummy House iasgone or changed ownership.

Just called they said same owners but now they're doibg noodles and dumplings now. Boooo!
Nori was the closest thing to a delivery version of takahashi. Kanoyama is a bit too expensive. Ginger will do for tonigjt but I haven't ordered from tere in years. I'm hesitant to trust sushi reviews on menupages et all, a cheap spicy tuna roll does not make a place good.
Fu gets good reviews as does shima. Anyone got tips? Preferably a place with real crab in the cali rolls and place that doesn't serve in metal tins. I find it imparts a bad taste.
Salmon sashimi
Mackerel sashini
Real crab cali roll
Eel avocado roll
Tuna roll
Uni sushi
That's my std go to delivery order.
Thx all.
What happened to Yummy House on 3rd and 12th?
Something happened. I ordered last week and it seemed different. They sent a dinner combo which I didn't request and in 5 years ordering from there that never happened.
Did u confirm its changed hands?
new england hot dogs
Bump!
Driving up to the cape on 95 next week from NYC. Anywhere good and easy to stop along the way? Plan was to do Pepe's but only for lack of other ideas, tho Pepe's plus a hot dog later down the road sounds great.
There's one I can usually see from the road, on the right side while northbound. I think it's a pink shack, anyone know what I'm talking about?
El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria
I had the beef just once and it was tough, but the flavor was still great and unique. Will try it again.
I now must add that the one time I had the falafel it was truly fantastic. A new high. There's a bit of clove in there that gives it a much deeper flavor than the usual fried balls you're used to elsewhere. I also found the inside was quite moist compared to most. Even other places that fry to order.
They also use a green hot sauce which is nice and a bit different flavor. Every sandwich I get there I order with tabouleh which I would rec anyone to try.
I'm going 2 - 3 times a week now. Had a beef stew that was good. Nice tender meat, not that chewy stew meat. Light, lots of peas and carrots in a tomato broth. Mostly I order hummus or baba wraps as the goal in my middle eastern diet is to keep it healthy but when I have strayed it's been super great.

Chicken Shwarma at Habibi is truly fantastic and unique. Havent had the same at the new Shater but it was really something else. The beef was good, but the chicken was a revelation.

El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria
the eldest brother was there, always my favorite of the bunch. Babba was great as always as were the grape leaves. The vegetables in my babba wrap seemed fresher too, tho it is tomato season after all.
Anyway so glad theyre back. Scored myself a free desert as well. Looked like an empanada, crunchy/chewy drenched in honey with nuts inside that rose water flavor. Quite good.
Didn't know anything about this Habibi thing. When I asked the oldest brother he just said someone had taken it over and it was being renovated. As an old regular maybe he thought I knew or is there a family beef brewing?
