Manhattan Asian style bang bang

I don't know what's going on with my post...I'm "taste test" on the NJ board. I enjoy your posts there and I was amazed at the Louis CK bang bang episode, hence the interest.
Also, with the NJ meet ups, I hope you'll do a Korean one someday. I went once with the crowd to the Szechuan place in Hazlet that has since closed.

Pho/Bhan Mi

Perhaps the next step is to challenge each other to a duel.
I suggest the Lemongrass parking lot at dawn. Your choice of swords or pistols.

I did say "typically not spicy" and I stand by that. Although there are a few spicy dishes, I don't think it's a dominant characteristic of the cuisine. That your companion asked for an extra spicy meal (unless it was Thai) seems incongruous to the spirit of Vietnamese cuisine. That is what confused me until I realized that Lemongrass also serves Thai dishes.

From Wikipedia:
Vietnamese cuisine encompasses the foods and beverages of Vietnam, and features a combination of five fundamental taste elements (Vietnamese: ngũ vị) in the overall meal.[1] Each Vietnamese dish has a distinctive flavor which reflects one or more of these elements. Common ingredients include fish sauce, shrimp paste, soy sauce, rice, fresh herbs, and fruits and vegetables. Vietnamese recipes use lemongrass, ginger, mint, Vietnamese mint, long coriander, Saigon cinnamon, bird's eye chili, lime, and basil leaves.[2] Traditional Vietnamese cooking is greatly admired for its fresh ingredients, minimal use of oil, and reliance on herbs and vegetables. With the balance between fresh herbs and meats and a selective use of spices to reach a fine taste, Vietnamese food is considered one of the healthiest cuisines worldwide.[3]

I should have said confusing.

Pho/Bhan Mi

I find this suspicious. Vietnamese food is typically not spicy and relies more on fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, lemongrass and fish sauce. There is usually Sriracha sauce on the table but not in the dishes.

I just looked up the restaurant and see that it is billed as Viet-Thai. It's the Thai dishes that are spicy. Since this post was about Pho and Bahn Mi, I was focused on Vietnamese food.

Thanks! I'm further south but we may be up for the drive. I'm just south of the Driscoll Bridge so Edison recommendations are also appreciated.

Christmas- Chinese Restaurants

Looking for a Chinese restaurant open on Christmas. Places I generally like are Wonder Seafood, Dragon Palace....but wouldn't mind a drive to someplace new. Korean would also work.

Inkanto Peruvian Cuisine in Hazlet

We ate there last night. I'll be amazed if this restaurant lasts a year. They missed so many marks that the few decent things could not save the day.

The green sauce mussels- tiny, almost non-existent bits of mussels swimming in a gallon of pretty good green sauce. No rice or bread to sop it up. We asked and were brought a small scoop of rice and a cold pedestrian roll.

The ceviche tasted okay but not great. Seafood stew dish, nothing special.

Husband had roast chicken...said it was dry and an empanada...said it was good.

I waited so long for this to open and found it very disappointing. A lot of service missteps too.

Now I wait for Pho 99 in Eatontown.

Vollkornbrot- where to buy?

Thank you for the replies. Yes drubenero, I was amazed how great their breads are. So much better than Amy's or Balthazar or any of the good bakeries that I've tried in the city. Their pecan raisin bread is amazing too.

I think it's a german sourdough rye bread- it weighed a ton. Standard wouldn't even cut it for me because it is so dense that it screws up the slicer.

Vollkornbrot- where to buy?

I was in Portland, ME last week and bought a fantastic loaf of this dense rye bread at Standard Baking Company. It was so much better than the similar type I've bought at Whole Foods. I'm wondering if there is any bakery in NY/NJ that sells this?

Okay but these are nice people who I just told about Chowhound so let's be gentle about informing them about the site rules. Thanks.

Vietnamese Cuisine - Toms River

Vietnamese food is not usually spicy. You can add Sriracha if you like but the dishes tend to be subtle but very flavorful, usually served with fresh mint, basil, cilantro, bean sprouts. A strong fish sauce mixture to dip the food in provides the saltiness necessary for seasoning. That said, I'm usually disappointed in the Vietnamese restaurants in NY/NJ. My mother used to live near Greensboro, NC and the Viet restaurants there were so much better. I think there is a strong community in NC to support them. I'm hoping that Pho 99 soon to open in Eatontown is passable. It's one of my favorite cuisines because it's interesting while also being pretty healthy.

Fried oysters ? Red Bank area?

Same- Meh
Ditto for Navesink Fishery fried oysters- Meh

Too bad Keyport Fishery doesn't have a restaurant. So far that is my favorite place for fried seafood.

Restaurant Pet Peeves

The worst for me is when the waitstaff grips the top of my water/tea/glass/cup with their fingers. I can't believe how may waiters do this. Totally repulsive.

Cave Paleo

Cute little cafe and new/consignment furniture shop in Avon-By-The-Sea. We read about it in the Tri-City News. Be forewarned that there is no sign on the main drag or even the side street. There is a sign in the adjacent alley but you can also enter the shop on Sylvania Ave.

Small, with 6-7 tables, we sat at a table for two on cube chairs- not the most comfortable- but the larger tables had regular chairs. We both had the bison with duck fat burger w/ egg, avocado, sriracha and sweet potato home fries. It was a little confusing because the home fries were under the burger and hard to see and there was also a side of cold sweet potato salad. I was not a fan of the cold salad- would rather have warm fries or home fries on the side. The burger was small but very good. At $14, I wouldn't order it again as I'm not strict Paleo but if you are, it's great to have a place to eat and be able to stick to your food plan. I read a review about bison osso bucco and would love to try that. I'm just not sure I'm willing to pay the price (but I'm cheap).

Breakfast Cereal from Your Childhood

I haven't had time to read through all of the responses but has anyone mentioned Kellogg's Concentrate? It consisted of tiny uniform flakes in a smaller than normal cereal box with a pull out metal spout.

I miss those and Dannon Prune and Apricot yogurt (2 separate flavors). My sister and I still pine for those.

Anyone interested in a Serious Sichuan Crawl ?........

Will someone (Tapas52?) pick a day/time or float a few possibilities?

I think this is a great choice since it's usually hard to try a lot of dishes if you go as a couple or small group.

(Jerry's Back) with Season 2 of COMEDIANS IN CARS GETTING COFFEE

I love this show- favorite guest ever was Alec Baldwin. I thought most of the episodes were really funny. I'm amazed that these stars eat in some of the places that they meet. If I had that much money, I don't think I'd be eating a tuna sandwich at a diner.

10th Ave. Burrito Co. - Belmar ~ Featured on DD&D

I knew it was over for me when they had a tequila tasting menu or some such nonsense. I loved the original grungy place with all of the tattooed employees. I hated the music but liked going anyway. I love places that are the vision of an individual rather than a corporate investment opportunity. It took me a little while to warm up to the second location but eventually I liked it even better than the first since it was much more comfortable to eat there. The newest place just leaves me cold. It's too big, too chopped up, the food now seems like an afterthought. It really seems like they are promoting a "scene". It might be fun for kids but I liked the creative small local vibe of #1 and #2. Sad for me but I'm sure it will find an audience.

New Years Day lunch between Montclair and Atlantic Highlands

I'll be meeting relatives who are staying in Montclair. I'm looking for a relaxed nice lunch place where we can catch up without being rushed. I'd be willing to drive to Montclair for a good place but if there is someplace in between, that would be best.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Oh gosh, full-fat sugar-free frozen yogurt....that's my dream too. I've often thought that I should just buy an ice cream maker and try making a batch myself.

10th Ave. Burrito Co. - Belmar ~ Featured on DD&D

I went to the newest version of 10th Ave Burrito for the first time today. I loved the original hole in the wall and came to really enjoy the next location as well. I think I'm out though. Today, the food was kind of sloppy and it seemed like such a "scene' which to me, is always a death knell. Many may still like it but I can tell it's no longer my kind of place. I love mom and pop labor of love type restaurants and with the new bar and much larger space, I just don't get that vibe anymore.
