Mateo R's Profile

Moving To Santa Monica and searched a lot! Check my list?!

value for dollar is not so good in SM. some places which I really like and my wallet also likes are:

Hide sushi. best no frills sushi. Sushi Masa if you want a nicer atmosphere. Santouka ramen, Furaibo. bay cities.

Santouka

Masa Restaurant
2063 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91107

Quick - Fun Mexican on West side

Lares is a good date place.

Fairly cheap ocean front restaurant in Santa Monica??? Help!

these recommendations are all in very lively tourist areas, which is the opposite of back on the beach, which only had about 3 tables occupied tonight at about 7:30. all were sitting indoors not on the beach. I think the place is reasonable but i haven't been for dinner. To me the selling point of this place is outdoor seating on the beach.

Terried Sake House Closed

Furaibo on Sawtelle.

recommended dishes include the house special fried chicken, agedashi tofu, and hanpen cheese.

Help - What is the mystery spice at Gaby's?

This is particularly true for the restaurant on Venice Blvd, which I prefer for dining out event thought the express and Marina are closer. In fact I went there last night. It's a bargain night out , especially with BYOB no corkage.
love the zaatar also.

Santa Monica Seafood

I agree that blue plate is the best choice within walking distance.

Dinners in Santa Monica

LGO is a short walk 3-4 blocks from the mariott.

West side fish market?

I buy clams and some fish from Safe and Save and the Japanese supermarkets are good for sushi and some fish, but for live shellfish, live fish and overall variety Seafood Paradise is better and cheaper than anywhere by the Ocean. I know it is too far to drive unless you want Live crabs or something special and I wish there was something similar in Koreatown, but it is what it is. There is no great seafood market on the westside. I keep a collapsable ice chest in the trunk of my car, as any chowhound should.

West side fish market?

there is not a good market on the west side once price is part of the equation. the recs above are the best bet if you don't want to drive. Quality seafood has the best live tanks for shellfisk and SM seafood has a decent selection. The best Seafood market in greater LA is Seafood Paradise in Rosemead.

reasonably priced sushi to impress the out-of-towners

Sushi Masu on Westwood

Places to buy fish?

No need to go further.

Looking for a Paris-Brest cake

i'm pretty sure Jean-louis at Caprice will make one for you.

Happy hour recs along Ocean Ave in Santa Monica

i think they are sitll giving away coupons(up the street by the promenade) for a free appetizer at happy hour,

Happy hour recs along Ocean Ave in Santa Monica

I cugini has a decent happy hour in the bar area only.
$10 will get you a glass of chianti and a beef carpaccio or pizza.

Best Creme Brulee in LA???

I think Caprice is an excellent french pastry shop, and I love their creme brulee, but I think you need a blowtorch to reheat it.

Blue Plate Oysterette - Whole Belly Fried Clams

they are the real thing, and a good bargain compared to Quality seafood, which is the only other place in the area I know that has them. $16 for what seems to be between 1 and 2 Lbs. I haven't been for a couple of months, so they may not be on the menu currently. I definitely recommend them and I had been planning on going back for a couple buckets this weekend.

Great food in Westwood or West LA

I have to disagree with this rec. this place is ok for cheap sushi and drunken college kids, but not a chow destination.

Need to buy some live lobsters. Where?

Seafood paradise market in Rosmead is easily the best seafood market in LA if price is considered in the equation. they have maine lobster for around 7.99 and also have several other varieties of lobsters and crabs.

Margaritas/appetizers in West LA Area?

Lares on Pico.

Fresh Fish in LA

Seafood Paradise in Rosemead is the best value/quality retail market in greater LA.

Sushi on the westside

Hide and Masu are two of the top picks for value. Masu has a better atmosphere. and Hide has lower prices. The sushi is similar quality.

Santa monica lunch--with some special criteria

this place is a short walk from Pico and main - 1.5 blocks.

Good lunch places in Santa Monica?

Tacos por favor is the best lunch in the area.

FRESH SEAFOOD MARKET IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY - SPECIFICALLY CRABS!!!!

then you might be quite suprised to learn that the guy at the farmers market is selling rock crab, which would usually be thrown back by anyone who has an option to cook live dungeness crab. I prefer buying from seafood paradise, but 99 ranch has some pretty good quality crab. Dungeness is one of the top species, while rock crab is bycatch.

Blue Plate Oysterette opening on Ocean Ave. In Santa Monica next month.

I was waiting for this place to open, and i was very satisfied on my first visit. The place looks great, and I like the atmosphere a lot. they did not have all the east coast favorites I was looking forward to ( no fried belly clams and no east coast oysters), but there was plenty of good chioces on the menu. I am a big fan of steamers, and I was not disappointed. I was initially hoping for plain steamers with butter (east coast style) but the mariniere sauce was excellent.
The other two restaurants I mentioned in the OP are also open. The 5th amendment ale house feels like local a neighborhood pub, with an excellent beer selection and happy hour beer prices until 9pm. I have only had an appetizer at La Cachette, which was good, but I prefer the atmosphere of Anisette, and I am likely to coninue to go there for my french bistro fare.

Restaurants near local beaches

I think Tacos Por favor would hit the spot after a day at the beach. I think they close at 8p.m.

First Peak: New England Style Seafood Shack Finally Available in LA: BP Oysterette in Santa Monica

I like the casual but upscale atmosphere, and I am thrilled to have a place closer than quality seafood to satisfy my soft shell clam (steamer) cravings.

La Cachette Bistro opening tonight

the menu looks pretty good, with slightly lower prices than Anisette. I noticed that they are going to have a happy hour menu as well.
