Raleigh - Farmers Cheese?

The area Whole Foods carry Lifeway brand. Not sure who has Friendship nowadays. And Chapel Hill Creamery makes farmer's cheese, too!

Franks Pizza on New Bern Ave, Raleigh

A good pie to try is the one made at a little basement pizzeria in Glenwood South. I rolled my eyes at the name: Badabing's--but it was some of the best NY style pizza I've had in NC. The location makes it difficult to get to, and the times you might want good pie will probably coincide with the evening insanity that goes on at Glenwood South, but it's worth the trouble.
FYI, I'm a big fan of J&S in Apex & Fuquay, if that gives you anything to gauge my taste by.

The new Whole Foods in South Park (Charlotte)

Earth Fare hasn't been that small in many years. It has fewer stores, sure, but they've been owned by investment group after investment group. I agree with mikeh...patronize a co-op or family owned grocery if you are against large businesses.

Scratch in Durham

You should try the pastries at Loaf! While I adore their breads, their pastries are the best I've had. Specifically, I think their croissants with Surry Co. ham and gruyere, and their pain au chocolat steal the show.

What's Wrong with Raleigh? Why No Interesting Bakeries?

I had two great meals at Rooster's over on Morrison Blvd in Charlotte this past week. The place is a little pricier than my usual pick, but the food was worth it, even the sides. They have a succotash that I'm still thinking about. Crazy, right? Anyway, I recommend it. Great service and a great wine list, to boot.

What's Wrong with Raleigh? Why No Interesting Bakeries?

I wasn't listing "fairly good" restaurants. These are as good as any I've been to in Chapel Hill or Durham. Humble Pie has been through a few iterations over the last 25 years, and is well executed (small plates, mostly, now. Brunch is still terrific.) Have not had the issues you claim to have had at Poole's, but to each his own. I don't dismiss a place after only one visit. If that were the case, I would have never gone back to Geer St. in Durham. <shrug> Perhaps I should remain happy that the out of towners aren't clogging up the tables at some of my favorite places.

What's Wrong with Raleigh? Why No Interesting Bakeries?

Really? You don't think there's much going on downtown in Raleigh, food-wise? When's the last time you were there? J. Betski's. Seaboard 18. Raleigh Times. Vic's. Sitti. Poole's. Cafe Luna. Jibarra. Beasley's. Chuck's. Busy Bee. The Borough. Mo's Diner. Battistella's. I know I'm leaving more out...

SF-Style Sourdough in Durham

Go around the corner to Loaf. They're open Tues-Fri from 7am to 6pm and Saturdays from 9am to 3pm. Follow them on facebook and you'll get updates as to what they have available each day. And bonus: their pastry is amazing.

The grilled tofu banh mi is really good. I'm no expert on authentic banh mi, though.

Truffles Hilton Head

Funny, I was there last Monday. I had the French Onion soup, and the cajun chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. The soup was really good, it looked to be made with chicken broth. The croutons still crispy in parts (something I like) and the cheese was in just the right quantity. Aside from tasting on the salty side, the sandwich was delicious. The fries were most likely previously frozen, and that was a disappointment. My mother has eaten there a few times, and she had commented on the overuse of salt with the grilled shrimp skewers, but that her sides had been very good. This time, she had the mango chicken sandwich and loved it. Interesting to know that they are associated with Ruby Tuesdays. Overall, I thought they did a decent job both with food and service, but I'll avoid in the future b/c I don't enjoy salt like I have in years past.

carryout Thanksgiving options in the Asheville area???

I'm sure Greenlife Grocery will have their prepared foods area loaded with sliced roasted turkey and fixings. That way, you can buy as little of each as you want and not have to commit to a whole turkey. I will say that if you buy the gravy already in tubs from them, go for the vegan gravy--it has a better depth of flavor than the non-vegan one, despite needing a little extra thickening.

NC State Fair 2011 (Raleigh)

I also went on Friday night--it really was a pleasant night to be there. I also stopped in for some NCSU Howlin' Wolf ice cream. The chocolate peanut butter swirl was very good. I think they use actual peanut butter instead of some kind of peanut butter flavored syrup like a lot of brands out there, because the PB wasn't salty (that's not necessarily a bad thing.)
I also had my first funnel cake in about 15 years...just the basic with powdered sugar. Yup, crunchy and sweet, just like I remember. ::drool:::

Spanish Chorizo in Raleigh?

It's D'Rouco Chorizo and it's made in Matthews, NC outside of Charlotte. It is sold at the Wade Avenue WFM. It's free of nitrates and the pork is traceable and compassionately raised. And, the Roucos are great, friendly people.

Great grilled cheese in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill?

Aaaaand, I had the soppressata, fontina, arugula & mustard panino from Toast tonight. Also delicious. The only thing that would have made it better would be their tomato based onion soup, but it wasn't an option tonight.

Recommendations for Columbia, SC?

I'm a big fan of Shealy's BBQ out in Batesburg-Leesville, if you have time for the drive out there. Otherwise, Hudson's is great for bbq. I like Zesto's for good fried chicken.

Raleigh steakhouses with good vegetarian options

You should be able to request a vegetable plate at most steakhouses, or at least a selection of vegetable sides. Creamed spinach, roasted mixed vegetables, a starch of some kind, and mushrooms make a tasty meal and should be vegetarian friendly (though it's possible the mushrooms might be cooked in a meat based broth.)

Hilton Head/Blufton Roadside eats - I'm talkin' fried local fish & shrimp?

Bluffton Oyster Co. recently opened the Bluffton Family Seafood Restaurant. They serve local shrimp and local oysters in season. I'm down here right now; the shrimp is tasting pretty fine!
And, it's right around the corner from the local bbq place that just moved from a small stand to a brick & mortar location. Haven't had a chance to eat that yet this year, though.
