looking for south carolina bbq
If the Ward's in Bishopville is anything like the one in Sumter, avoid it. While their hash and hush puppies are great, everything else (chicken, ribs, pulled pork) is bland and cooked in an oven.
Columbia, SC: Restaurants serving duck, and misc.
Last week Earthfare had 1 whole duck along with a few pieces of duck breasts and legs in their freezer section. Though sometimes when it's sold it may take them a while to restock.
If you're looking for duck breasts The Fresh Market is the way to go since they usually have fresh pieces on hand.
Pizza, Columbia, SC
I've been there. I had a small Tuscan pizza from there a while back and while I enjoyed the toppings I was a little disappointed in the crust which I found a little bland. Though this was a while back, close to when they first opened so it may have improved now.
I've actually been meaning to try it again but everytime I go there I can't stop myself from ordering a cheesesteak. I love their cheesesteaks and it's been preventing me from getting some of their hoagies which I've wanted to try.

He has lost some weight.

"Since leaving the show, his heart condition has improved, and he has begun working hard to get his weight under control. Working with a personal trainer, he has lost 55 pounds so far, and is getting ready to undergo gastric bypass surgery. He has also gotten married (he postponed his wedding to appear on the show) and went on a honeymoon to the Caribbean, where he enjoyed a lot more recognition as well."
Bagels in Columbia, SC
I have to say this place was a total disappointment. Not only were the bagels underwhelming but the worse part about the place was the service.
On my first visit I ordered a Salt bagel with lox spread. When I went up to the counter a lady came up and took my order but informed me that she "didn't know when my order would be ready" since most of the staff were just hanging out outside the building. To make it worse, the place wasn't busy at all. I was the only person waiting on an order. 10 minutes later I got my bagel. This wasn’t a big deal and didn't really bother me since I'm not really one to judge a place on one visit. So I just ignored it and looked at it just one of those days that is bound to happen.
As to the bagel, wow what a disappointment. The bagel didn't have ANY crunch to it and as to the chewiness? Forget about it. There was barely any chew to it, it was closer to a roll than a bagel. Is it that hard to boil a bagel before baking it? The boiling step is really needed on these bagels. The spread wasn't any better, much of the lox in the spread had the consistency of mush. However on my second visit the spread was MUCH better with nice large chunks of lox.
Today I decided to give the place another shot and try a different bagel. When I went up to the counter and gave my order of "Two everything bagels, 1 untoasted and 1 toasted with lox spread" she just gave me this blank look on her face like I was stupid for a few seconds and blurted out "What?" Seems like no big deal, right? Maybe she didn't hear me. No... The reason was because she didn't want to write down my order. Yes she casually said this to the employee next to her.
As to the bagel, same experience as my first visit though as mentioned before the spread but much better this time around.
I REALLY wanted to like this place, I absolutely love bagels and the fact the only places to get one in Cola. are from grocery stores and chains like Brueggers, Einstein, and DD sucks. However this place needs a lot of work.
Pizza, Columbia, SC
What's the widow crust?
I agree with Pizza Man though I can definately see how some people could hate it. I wish there were better pizza options in Columbia. Hopefully someone decides to open up a pizzera putting out Neapolitan pies.
Meringue Apple Pie recipe--Eric Ripert?
It was Hubert Keller's recipe. I've tried to searching for the recipe but nothing is coming up.
Sticky Fingers - Mt. Pleasant, SC
I remember the first time I went to SF was during a field trip to Charleston back in middle school. I loved their pulled pork, though it may have been due to it being the first time having pulled pork.
After my last couple of experiences I should've just stopped after my 1st visit because it hasn't lived up to what I remembered. The ribs and chicken were bland and dry. They definately couldn't stand alone without sauce but it didn't help that the sauce is terrible itself. The Tennessee Whiskey sauce is the worst I've ever had.
Bagels in Columbia, SC
Wow... With that background I can't blame you for having high expectations. I'm going try it out for myself Monday or Tuesday. I just can't imagine this place not being able to beat out some of the other bagels in the area.
Bagels in Columbia, SC
Bruegger's just may be your best bet in Columbia. If there's a better option in the area they're doing a great job of keeping themselves low key. Seems like the only options for bagels are chains like Bruegger's, Einstein Bro.'s, and DD.
In Columbia, SC for 3 days. What's a hound to eat?
Have to totally disagree about Maurice's. I can't even consider it BBQ, the meat is so doused in the BBQ sauce that you can barely taste it. All you're going to taste is the sauce which isn't good to begin with and Ithis is coming from a fan of mustard based BBQ sauce.
Sadly the BBQ scene is pretty poor within Columbia.
what Columbia, SC needs
Wow. You've read my mind PERFECTLY. This has been my biggest gripe, out of a lot, with Columbia. I been craving for a good fatty pastrami on rye for the longest in the area. As you mentioned I can't believe the lack of a Jewish style deli with a pretty decent sized Jewish population in the area.
Pizza Hut or Domino's Pizza
I'd say find something else but if it really has to come down to these 2, go with Pizza Hut and their pan pizza. It's the lesser of 2 evils. I've found Domino's ingredients to have a really weird artifical taste to them.
Burgers in Columbia, SC?
Anyone have any suggestions as to where to get a good burger in the Columbia area? It seems Rockaway's is the most popular for their Pimento Burger but I'm looking some other options. A definite plus would be if they're willing to cook their burgers anything other than well done. I haven't found a place yet that's willing to cook their burgers medium rare.
Thanks.
