Dish of the Month SF (June 2013) - Nominations It's time to choose a Dish of the Month for SF Bay Area for June 2013. This is our 12th Dish of the month, which means our 1 year anniversary will be coming up soon! The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for SF Bay Area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible, reporting back with details and photos. It's great to talk about places you've been in the past, but the idea is to explore new places and make new discoveries. The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (minestrone soup, xiao long bao) but might also be more of a dish category (stuffed pasta dishes, Asian fried chicken). It's up to the users, but it probably makes sense to choose something that locals are excited about trying and finding the best versions! In the past, the dish of the month inspired a few Chowdowns so people could try the dish together....hopefully this tradition can continue! This is the nomination thread for June 2013…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on May 28), it will be one vote per user. To nominate a dish, post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. You can also second nominations made by others by using the recommend button. I will start out by nominating some of the runners-up from last month. This thread will be open until May 28th. Let the nominations begin! Community Survey: Bánh Khọt, Vietnamese Mini Rice Pancake/Cupcake Thanks for this great report! The spherical banh khot look really cool, and I'm definitely going to try this place next time I'm in San Jose. |

I don't know how long it will take or how soon the fix will come, but we will do our best to let you know! Thanks |

Hi GiOny, Thanks for the feedback. We're not likely to be spending much time on design changes like this in the near future, so I don't think this will be changing soon. As you may know, many users don't even click any buttons on that login page. If you enter your username, then your password, and then press 'enter', you'll be logged-in. Dave MP |

Hi Dirtywextraolives, Thanks for alerting us to this bug. I just tested on the ipad, and had the same problem, so we will be looking into it! Dave MP |

I definitely prefer thin! I grew up in Western MA, where we get local asparagus at this time of year, and I love the delicate thin stalks, which are really different than what you can find the rest of the year at the supermarket. Now that I live in California, the season comes much earlier, but I still always look for the thinner bunches at the markets. I like that the thinner asparagus cooks more quickly, that you don't have to worry about them being tough, and that you don't have to shave them. I like cutting them into string-bean sized pieces, and stir-frying with some ginger, butter, and a bit of lemon. |

Momofuku Noodle Bar's Fried Chicken I tried the fried chicken at Momofuku Noodle Bar a few weeks ago, and overall thought it was great. There were four of us, and it was a LOT of food for four people. I'd say we ate about 2/3 of the chicken, though. I really liked the sauces and wrappers that came with the chicken, particularly the homemade pancakes. I also appreciated the fresh herbs, and thought it was a cool idea to have fried chicken that you take off the bone and wrap up in either lettuce or pancake with all the possible flavor combos. I ended up eating more of the Southern style than the Korean style, and I preferred it slightly, even though I found it a bit too salty. In fact, the batter on the Southern version was very umami-rich....it tasted like it had been breaded in chicken bouillon cubes. But I loved the crispy outside, and the moist inside, and adding the sauces and veggies dulled down the saltiness a bit. Overall, probably not the best fried chicken I've ever had, but a fun experience and pretty tasty nonetheless. |

Dim Sum Chowdown at Great Eastern Restaurant on Jackson St. [San Francisco Chinatown] Sorry I missed this, and can't wait to hear the reports! Also looking forward to hearing how it compares quality wise to Lai Hong Lounge. |

Gouda - May 2013 Cheese of the Month We tried two goudas this afternoon in a meeting at CHOW. I liked both of them. First was a mild Parrano Gouda Uniekaas, which was creamy and mild. It was on the soft side, and melted in my mouth. Next was a Vintage 5 Year Aged Gouda Uniekaas, which was amber colored and harder. This also melted on the mouth and tasted sweet, similar to butterscotch. Whole Foods in SOMA SF had several goudas to choose from, but I'm glad I picked both of these. |

Hi shoeman, You can do this easily by modifying the url. You'll notice that the url for the Boston board is: http://chowhound.chow.com/boards/12 Meanwhile, the url for page 2 is: http://chowhound.chow.com/boards/12?p... If you change that number 2 to be any other number (up to 1700), you'll go straight to that page. What number you need to go to depends on how you've sorted discussions, and how many you are viewing per page....but this trick should help you find what you need pretty quickly. The other option is to do an Advanced Search, and limited yourself to a certain time period and the Boston board. Let us know if you have further questions about either option, |

Hi LindaWhit, If you use your back button instead of pressing "This post's thread", then you'll return to the uncollapsed version. Deborah describes this change here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8975... It only works with the back button, though. We're also working on a better solution for this, though that won't be immediate. Hope this helps, Dave MP |

Looking for a Few Dinners in/near the Castro [San Francisco] I haven't been to Fable or Canela. What I know about them comes mainly from Chowhound, and nobody has talked about either very much yet. But they both look interesting, so thanks for posting about them! |

Banh Xeo - SF Dish of the Month May 2013 I've never seen mustard greens as a wrapping! I wonder if this is common elsewhere, or if it's just particular to this restaurant? |

Looking for a Few Dinners in/near the Castro [San Francisco] Depending on where in the Castro you're staying, Delfina and Bar Tartine might be within walking distance. And Incanto might be within walking distance if you don't mind climbing a large hill. I second the recommendation for all three of these, and I think they are all better than options you'd find right in the Castro. And yes, people still do hail cabs, and fortunately the Castro is generally a pretty easy place to hail one! :) |

What's Chow-worthy near the Intercontinental on Howard St.? [San Francisco] Lunch at Burmese Kitchen in the Tenderloin/Civic Center area could be a good option if you're in the neighborhood. Otherwise Burmese in other neighborhoods might be good too, since I don't believe there's a ton of Burmese in LA. |

Release Notes for May 14, 2013 - New Layout on Mobile Discussion Pages New in today's release: new formatting for mobile discussion pages. Changes you will notice include: 1) User avatars added to all posts of the discussion. 2) Changes to font and spacing of titles and text. 3) Gallery of all photos from the discussion appears at the top of the discussion. 4) If you click on a photo anywhere on the discussion, you'll be brought into a full-screen view. You can also press a thumbnail view to see all the photos from that discussion. 5) Improvements to the Flagging process on mobile, making it easier to click and report problem posts. If you flag a post as vulgar, spam, or off topic, the feedback will be sent immediately to our moderation team. Flagging a post as "other" will give you the ability to add a comment and explain why you are flagging. We've tested these new features on a number of mobile devices, but since there are so many products on the market, there may be bugs on certain devices that we're unaware of. If you notice bugs with this release, feel free to report them here, and provide as much detail as possible about what kind of device and browser you are using. Thanks very much! |

Release Notes for May 14, 2013 - Recommend and Trending Now New in Today's Release: The "Trending Now" module, which is on the right hand side of every discussion page on the desktop site, now shows the Most Recommended Discussions for that board, from the past day. Up until today, this module showed the 5 most recently updated discussions from a specific board. So, if you had been looking at a Site Talk discussion like this one, you'd see the 5 most recently updated discussions from Site Talk. Now, this module will show the 5 discussions with the highest total number of recommends in the past day, from a specific board. The formula we are currently using takes into account the total number of recommends made in the past 24 hours (regardless of whether they were dispersed amongst several posts or all on a single post), so the idea is to surface discussions that are active, engaging, and recent discussions. It's very possible that we will tweak this formula in the future, but for now we are giving this a try. We encourage people to use the recommend button any time they see something that they think was worth reading, particularly if it's helpful, interesting, or informative. Now when you do this, you'll be helping to populate the module that will allow people to see the most engaging, current discussions on any board at a quick glance. Feel free to ask any questions here, though keep in mind that features like these will almost definitely continue to evolve, and there may be some questions that we won't be able to fully answer—but we will definitely do our best! Is there a way to change my profile name? Hi mbCrispyBits, Thanks for your post. Changing your username (which is what I think you mean?) is unfortunately not an option. You can read more about this in this recent discussion, and find out what the alternatives are: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/9015... Thanks! |
