Kosher Food In Montreal

Vacationed in Montreal this summer. Thought Chops was great. Morty's was OK, not amazing. If you like sushi, then Yakimono is fantastic-we went there twice and enjoyed every morsel.

Can't speak to Shabbos takeout as we didn't stay...

26 by Shiloh Los angeles

I was at this restaurant last week while on a vacation. 26 was incredible (as was Shiloh's, which also seems to be obsessed with "fake treif"-for my entree I had a "blue cheese crusted filet steak" which was delicious!)

teaneck for anniversary dinner

Agree with the above-went to etc for anniversary dinner and was blown away. If you're not going on a Sunday, try the steak tasting menu!

costco new rochelle

Don't know about the salmon, but it does have a kosher bakery.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

This might have been a false alarm-CT still has a fine supply of kosher dough.

Kosher Travelers' Supermarket Challenge

Ah, we did the following in San Luis Obispo, CA (using just the convenience store on our resort grounds!):
Fancy garlic and herb crackers (I forget the brand)
Boursin cheese
Salad of avocado and grape tomatoes with olive oil and lemon juice.
Bottle of Baron Herzog wine (That part is cheating-we had that from our previous night's stay in Oxnard!)

please help! can i have a normal honeymoon?

Panama has a surprisingly large amount of kosher food,-it's supposed to be great (friends of ours went). (not Panama, FL, Panama the country.)

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

I tried defrosting once in the microwave, it was very bad. Defrost it for about 8-10 hours in the fridge, then 1-2 hours at room temp. Or 3 hours or so at room temp will do it too.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

I make my own dough, but I use TJ's when I don't feel like making my own, and once I learned to rest it for a while, I had no problems.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

Did you let it rest outside of the refrigerator for at least an hour? Dough will resist stretching but if its rested long enough then it will stretch relatively easily.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

For what it's worth, Trader Joe's in Westport, CT still has the kosher dough, and seems well-stocked.

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

Wow-thanks for the update. I havent gotten their dough in a few weeks because I'm making my own now, but I definitely want it to be available. I'll see what I can find out-in the meantime we should definitely encourage them to get certification on the new brand-any idea where it's made?

Trader Joe's Pizza Dough to lose kosher certification

It is strange that there hasn't been a "kosher alert" to this effect. Has anyone called the KVH, who certifies the dough, to check this info? Additionally, this information seems to indicate that the dough is already not under supervision, even though the packaging might say that it is...again, I would expect a notification from the KVH if it were true.

KOSHER WINE (GENERALLY) SUCKS

At the $20-30 price point the Flegmann's Cabernet from Israel is excellent. Non-mevushal.

Costco Nanuet Kosher Beef

MisterBill,
I went Monday afternoon and they were unloading HUGE amounts into the case. I came home with 3 briskets, 3 packs of Flanken, and a pack of ground beef. It was Crown Glatt (which, contrary to the report below, is from Colorado-it is produced by the same people who made Colorado Kosher-Auerbach's. This is marked "Chassidishe Shechita", so they clearly are learning their customer base a little better-I imagine a lot of Monsey demands things like that.)

Trader Joe's Glatt Beef

That's good enough for me-thanks for the info! There is also a brand at Costco called Colorado Kosher, their hechsher is the OK not the OU-They are produced by someone called Auerbach Meats, also in Denver.

Trader Joe's Glatt Beef

Craig,
Yes, Trader Joe's on Post Road in Westport. Stop & Shop in Stamford and Westport both often carry Meal Mart beef, though supply is not always consistent.

ELG-we are having the same problem at our TJ in Westport-of course, it doesn't help that it is going on the shelves less than a week before its expiration date (it usually is shelf-stable for a month). One of my congregants has had a couple of spoiled pieces, though everything I've gotten has been great. They also do not understand the difference between the TJ brand (Triangle-K) and the Teva. Is Darien the closest TJ to you in Stamford? I have already been speaking to the manager at the Westport one. Feel free to contact me at rabbi@beitchaverim.com if I can be of assistance, as I'm sure Rabbi Cohen and Rabbi Krimsky will be helpful as well.

Trader Joe's Glatt Beef

I don't see any reference to Teva there-can you confirm? Sounds great!

Kosher (and good) sherry??

I believe that Tio Pepe makes both hechshered and non-hechshered Sherry. Contact one of the major kosher wine distributors in the NY area (i.e. Skyview), they will probably be able to help you.

Trader Joe's Glatt Beef

For those interested-the Trader Joe's in Westport, CT is carrying Teva Natural Angus Beef (same as I've seen in Costco)-prices are a little higher than Costco and selection is not as good, but still a great thing, and I assume that if it's in Westport it's in other places too. It is OU certified.

This is NOT the same as the Trader Joe's brand kosher beef, certified by the Triangle-K.

Kosher Cinnabon Now Open?

There is also a kosher Carvel/Cinnabon location in Stamford, CT.

Kosher Wedding

I got married at the Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht Club-they have a separate kosher kitchen but use their in house caterer, and I believe they are under the Vaad of Westchester. The price wasn't super cheap but I'm pretty sure it was much lower than the max you specified. Good luck.

Costco Nanuet Kosher Beef

Can someone in Westchester comment on this?

Costco Nanuet Kosher Beef

Well, I have to drive 45 minutes or more from Connecticut to get to this one, so it's not SO lucky. They have those Meal Mart cold cuts there as well, not a big deal. There are lots of Monsey people shopping in this Costco, obviously.

Costco Nanuet Kosher Beef

Hi all,
Was just at the Costco in Nanuet (near Monsey), and they now have kosher beef. Was surprised to see that it wasn't Empire beef but two brands I had never heard of. One is Colorado Kosher, (www.coloradokosher.com) and the other is Teva Kosher Beef (www.tevakosherfoods.com). Colorado is under O-K supervision, and Teva is under OU.

Prices for stuff I bought:
10.99/lb first cut brisket
14.99 for 3 pounds of 85/15 ground beef (separated into 3 one pound "bricks".
13.99/lb boneless ribeye steaks

They also had short ribs, stew beef, bone-in rib steaks, chuck roasts, and london broil.

All of these are vacuum-packed and say freeze by Dec. 11-not a bad shelf life!

Can anyone comment on what other Costcos have these products available? New Rochelle, Manhattan, Hackensack?

By the way, they also have lots of other products there-Meal Mart deli (turkey, corned beef, pastrami), and Natural Kosher (chalav yisrael version of the Little Farm Girls cheese)-shredded mozzarella 7.99/2lb bag (obscene!) and blocks of sliced American and Muenster cheese.

Kosher Caterers Fairfield County/Westchester County

The Vaad of Fairfield County supervises two caterers-Esti's and Simcha. Contact info is at http://www.vaadct.org/services.html. If you want dairy or fish you can also get from Sweet On You Cafe at the JCC in Stamford.

Westchester options: Supersol in Scarsdale, New Roc Glatt in New Rochelle. Eden Wok or Grill Point in New Rochelle could also do something nice.

Kosher meats at Brooklyn and 5 Towns Costco

Just an update-was at the Nanuet Costco today and while they had a great selection of Empire poultry (not frozen), cheese, meal mart deli, etc., there was no fresh kosher beef that I could find. Oh well...

the price on the cheese and chicken blew away Rockland Kosher...which blows away anything in Connecticut, where I drove from! Wish I had the time to make a weekly run there!

Shabbos in Connecticut

I would contact Rabbi Yitzchok Adler at Beth David Synagogue in West Hartford-he is one of the Orthodox rabbis in West Hartford and probably geographically closest to that hotel, so he may be able to give you more information.

If you'd like something closer to NYC, you can contact me for more information about potential venues in Westport, Norwalk, or Stamford.

Glatt Kosher in Central NJ?

Highland Park has Jerusalem Pizza, Mei Garden Chinese, Park Place (burgers, chicken, fast food type), Shushan Grill (Shwarma, Falafel, Sushi). That should take care of your needs-all are located on Raritan Avenue (Route 27) in Highland Park (take the exit right off Route 18 and all those places are within a few blocks.)

Fairfield County, CT - kosher anywhere?

There are no kosher delis in Fairfield County. The JCC in Stamford has some take out available but that is the closest thing. New Haven's deli is closed, but the Westville Kosher Market have take-out as well as the Kosher Chinese Express in New Haven. Also, New Rochelle's North Ave. has a bunch of good places.

Depending on how strictly your guests keep kosher, they may not want you to cook in your home. I'm the Orthodox rabbi in Westport-if you have any questions I'd be happy to try to help-email me at ravyossi@optonline.net.
