Illinois State Fair Food
Sorry, I did not get to reply before the fair was over....try the corn dog...Vose's is the one most like the best and the shrimp on a stick from louisana and anything at Pat and Mike's. Porkchop sandwiches are the best...next year...EWW
Illinois State Fair Food
I may be a little late...but my must is the shrimp on the stick just south of the grandstand...they come from the gulf coast each year and it is good....also the lemon shake ups at Pat & Mike's...across from the Coliseum. I advoid the fried on a stick candy bars, etc. but the Ethic Village has a lot of good eats....eww
I-70: OH, IN, IL, MO, KS, CO Cross Country Road Trip
I would stop in Effingham on Route 70 & 57...get off on the Teutopolis Exit and go on Wabash to Niemerg's Restaurant...good for breakfast or lunch or evening...get pie no matter when you eat...they have daily specials and chicken is extremely good...also have a nicer dinning room with a great salad bar and a bar also...moderately priced. If you are looking for an upscale meal try the FireFly off of the Keller Drive Exit . also a number of chains in the area off Keller Dr...Cracker Barrell is nice here also...deww
Good chow in southern Illinois?
Yes, I travel that area and I would suggest stopping at Mt. Vernon at the Cracker Barell which is right off I 57 on the west side...or a more home town restaurant...at Effingham where I 57 & 70 cross...get off on the Teutopolis Exit and go to the East...Niemerg's Restaurant is on the North side of Wabash...They have plate lunches at a reasonable cost...or they have a salad bar that is fresh...what ever you eat...sample the pies...I would only eat pie...coconut creme is the best IMO...or the Fire Fly restaurant for a little more upscale food which is at the Keller Drive Exit. Chicken at Niemerg's for lunch and then take pie with you...can't beat that...and at Champaign go to the Original Pancake House just to the East of the U of I exit....have a spinach salad or any breakfast item is good...strong coffee...EWW

Left over Prime Rib - what to do?
Ever take a good beef roast and cook it in coffee....that makes a wonderful meal 2nd day hash. Cook roast covered with lemon pepper for 15 minutes at 400 then add 3 cups brewed coffee 1 beef boullion cube and potatoes carrots, etc. or not and cook to your prefered doneness...with lowering the temperature to 350. add more coffee if it runs dry...second day add raw cubed potatoes and the pan dripping to a skillet and cook till tender add chopped beef cubes....to temperature...really good. eww

There is a Maid Rite in Springfield, Illinois on Jefferson Street near the state capitol. Don't worry you won't run into our Governor there...EWW
STL to MKE: 55 to 39 to 43: anything great?
I would stop in Springfield, Illinois and have a horseshoe sandwich. A local special which is a meat (usually ham, hamburger, or many other choices, on toast with french fries on top covered with a rich cheese sauce. I cover mine with catsup but most other's don't. My favorite place is Charlie Parker's on North Street, which is on the South side of town...Just off 55 North to 6th street on to Stanford and off to the right on North street...in an old quansit hut...but great food...featured on the food channel last year...enjoy Illinois capitol city...deww

Effingham, IL to Cleveland Road Trip
take a detour thru Bloomington, Indiana and eat at Michael's Uptown for breakfast...Finches for lunch and the Farm for dinner...and take the kids to see the University of Indiana...the foodies really know how to fix food in Bloomington...quite a bit more expensive than your wonderful Niemerg's home style food...but you have to splurge once in a while...EWW
Breakfast in ( or west of ) Terre Haute
Don't know where you are coming from....But on I 70 to the West is Effingham, Illinois, about an hour or so away...try Niemerg's Steak House on the Fayette exit... Route 40. Breakfast and the best pie...alot of chain restaurant's but no I HOP..there is a Denny's ...but try Niemerg's for good eggs and bacon...eww
Visiting Bloomington, IN in August...
I am a regular Bloomington visitor and enjoyed breakfast at Michael's Uptown on Sunday, and I was impressed. Try the french toast...it was yummy. The applewood bacon was a hit at our table also. The waiter young and attentive to both the young 4 year old and the grandma. The coffee was not as good as my regular Panera...but that is a good stop for a casual meal also...no alchol..and breakfast or lunch. Had dinner at Finch's and it was great also...the pizza was raved on...deww
Finch's -- Bloomington, IN
Treated my kids to dinner there on Friday night....My SIL had a wheat beer, which he really liked....I had the halibut, very good...My Dau had raves for the dessert, on the house,
pot of Chocolate. and a pound cake strawberry and lemon sherbet... My 4 year old granddaughter had a pizza...everyone was pleased young to old...staff was gracious and did not seem to mind the littleones...and our indecision on what to have....ENJOY Bloomington's food scene...
Any decent steak in Springfield, IL?
Both Gallagher's and Alexander's are good...try the brittany salad dressing at Gallagher's and the salad bar at Alexander's was not much last time I was there....did meet Obama at Alexander's once. Also try West Woods Lodge on Jefferson for good pub grub...EW
looking for really good pie-st louis area
Take a long drive to Effingham, Illinois Route 70 East and get off on the Wabash (Teutopolis Exit) Go to Niemerg's Steak House...probably 1/2 mile off exit for the BEST PIE in the world....it is worth the drive....also good fried chicken...price is very good also...take a Sunday drive....you won't regret it...Elaine
Springfield Illinois; Best Meat Market, produce
ctkathy:
You might try Humphrey's Market, 1821 S. 15th St. Springfield, Illinois ask for Hope..217-544 7445..not a good side of town but safe during the day...they are the place to go...would suspect that if it is not what they normally have they could arrange to have it for you....plan on visiting the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum while here over the holidays....
What's the strangest, or best, food you have eaten at a State Fair, stadium, or other outdoor venue?
Last few years the Decatur Celebration has had the best shrimp on the stick...the entertainment is good also... alway held the early part of August, but we go for the shrimp on a stick, sold by a group from Mississippi and they bring enough with them to come to Springfield the next week to do the Illinois State Fair...so in a two week timeframe I have access to the best of the shrimp on a stick. Shrimp threaded between pieces of onion on a wood stick. They offer cocktail sauce to dip. It is wonderful...
